There is speculation that the black market will continue to thrive in the wake of legalized marijuana, but a new survey suggests quite the opposite: in a taxed and regulated environment, the death of the common street dealer is imminent.

According to a recent online poll conducted by Medical Marijuana Business Daily, the majority of Colorado stoners -- 61 percent -- prefer to purchase weed from legal sources rather than frequent their neighborhood drug dealer. In fact, only five percent of the survey respondents revealed a loyalty to the black market despite legalization.

Overall, it appears as if there is very little allegiance when it comes to where marijuana users buy pot. Regardless if it comes from legal weed slingers or black market, the study finds 26-percent are only interested in buying from whoever has the best strain selection -- 17 percent simply want the cheapest prices.

Yet, one important factor when purchasing marijuana is safety, with 38 percent of the respondents reporting a preference for buying weed that has been properly tested and labeled -- not necessarily a feature when procuring a dime bag behind a King Soopers.

“I’m not surprised by this data,” said Cassandra Farrington, the publisher of Marijuana Business Daily. “For the past three years, our consumer marketplace surveys have shown that pricing is not as significant a factor as quality, strain selection and safety testing. In addition, this year’s legal retail sales boom in Colorado is solid evidence that many more consumers are willing to purchase cannabis from legal retailers than had been projected.”

Despite the optimistic revelations of this study, black market marijuana is in no way the last man on a sinking ship… at least not until federal prohibition laws have been repealed and marijuana finally becomes a household product brought to you by capitalist society. Until then, there is still plenty of room for the cartels to supply the American downtrodden.
