Joyce,

These days I have been posting reports of the Philippines tragedy at my 'end times' thread and yes, the fact you mention has crossed my mind. So difficult to figure out how the Filipinos must be suffering from the onslaught of nature. On the other hand, I can hardly imagine how Goya must have felt back then over the entire occupation process by the French armies. How far these two tragic events in both space and time, and yet how similar to each other. Merely posting about them these days has indeed affected me so much!

Quote:
You can feel the sadness and slow realization that death is very near.
It sounds like the reports of the out lying regions of the Phillipines in the news.
We can at least be comforted this time that help is on the way.

From "Los Desastres de la Guerra"
("The Disasters of War")

"Emphatic Caprices"

Francisco de Goya -
No saben el camino ("They do not know the way") (1)
(Plate 70, 1814-1815)

Francisco de Goya -
Contra el bien general ("Against the common good") (2)
(Plate 74, 1814-1815)

Francisco de Goya -
Esto es lo peor! ("This is the worst!") (3)
(Plate 75, 1814-1815)

Francisco de Goya -
El buitre carnívoro ("The flesh-eating vulture") (4)
(Plate 76, 1814-1815)

(1) A long line of male prisoners extending for a great distance, bound together with rope, walk across a mountainous countryside.

(2) A monstrous winged devil sits upon a rock and writes a book, perhaps a book of fate, or a book of evil.

(3) A wolf writes orders on a scroll on his lap assisted by a friar. They are giving orders to a long line of suffering, poor, and hungry people.

(4) A long line of people are chasing after a gigantic bird.

From "Los Desastres de la Guerra" ("The Disasters of War")

Highlights

Francisco de Goya -
Tristes presentimientos de lo que ha de acontecer
("
Gloomy premonitions of what must come to pass") (1)
(Plate 1, 1814-1815)

Francisco de Goya - Escapan entre las llamas
("They escape among the flames") (2)
(Plate 41, 1814-1815)

Francisco de Goya -
Yo lo vi ("I saw this") (3)
(Plate 44, 1814-1815)

Francisco de Goya -
Si resucitará? (Will she live again?) (4)
(Plate 80, 1814-1815)

(1)
This plate was in fact from one of the last groups to be created.

(2) Men and women some carrying each other run into the night, amidst chaos and terror.

(3) From the published edition, with surface tone over the landscape, sky, and woman's dress. In the proofs printed under Goya's supervision, there is no tone.

(4) The figure is "Truth", from plate 79. A woman is shown lying on her back, bathed in a halo of light before a gathering mob of hooded monks, while a masked figure beats the ground with a weapon.

What Goya must have seen is terrible.

What a wonderful and terrible library of war this artist has left us.

Dear friends and especially Roger,

This wonderful video has been a happy finding precisely now that this thread is reaching its end. I hope you can appreciate it even though it is not in English.
