Frederick Bazille (1841 – 1870) Family Reunion (1867) This painting shows the family of Bazille on the terrace at Bazille house at Montpellier, France. Bazille himself is to be seen on the extreme left of the group, just behind his cousin Monsieurs des Hours. What is extraordinary here is that Bazille has painted a picture which could easily be a photograph. Note how all of the figures are staring directly at the artist with the exception of his seated father. A very special and personal artwork. Superb landscape, portraits and use of strong light and deep shadows. I love this painting. A little formal but not stiff. A masterpiece.
