I think that this is a rather special self portrait. This is a self portrait by Rolinda Sharples (1794 – 1838) and this portrait dates from 1820 . Rolinda's parents were artists and this is her mother at her shoulder. Rolinda became one of the most successful female artists living in the provinces of England in the 19th century. She lived in Bath and this painting is to be found neartby in the City of Brisol Museum and Art Gallery. It is good to know that female artists existed and excelled at that time when their general opportunities were very limited. Personal note: I think that the person in the picture behind Rolinda is too her mother. What do you think? Roger
