The Most Remarkable Thing
1/10/2006 5:50:48 PM
Sometimes, the best lessons about success come from the oddest places. In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a newborn giraffe learns its first lesson. [excerpt] "The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendulous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over heels. When it doesn't get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again. The struggle to rise is momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it again to stimulate its efforts. Finally, the calf stands for the first time on its wobbly legs. Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing. She kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all enjoy young giraffes, and they'd get it too, if the mother didn't teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it." [end excerpt] Kind of redefines "helping," don't you think? What many people perceive as help is often really just a generous plate of sympathy with a side order of compassion and encouragement. Sometimes true help involves a kick in the hindquarters or ripping off blinders so we can see. Tough love is as hard to give as it is to receive. A lot of people don't have what it takes to give it, or receive it, so they defer to platitudes. The late Irving Stone spent a lifetime writing novelized biographies of men such as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin. Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of exceptional people. He said; "They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified, and for years they get nowhere. But every time they're knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And, at the end of their lives, they've accomplished some modest part of what they set out to do." Success is not determined by staying on your feet, nor by how many times you get knocked down. The key - is getting back up. : ) Linda

Hello Linda, Boy this story is really food for thought. We can definately learn something from the animal kingdom; if nothing else but survival. I've seen times when it's been easier to stay down and be miserable when I've fallen, but when I try to get myself out of that rutt it's always harder later. I still have these "bouts" now and then, probably always will. The difference now is having a stronger faith. Haveing lots of good friends like I do here at Adland is also a great help and blessing. Thank you for posting this "reminder". your friend, Steven

Great story Linda! I have missed a few. traveled during the holidays and had messages turned off... Everyone should take a look at the wild habits of animals...If you use common sense to think about the reasoning behind it. You will be rewarded with a lesson you'll never forget! That goes for all animals...They set a great example for us for success. Good luck to all, Angela

Winston Churchill said; Man will occasionally stumble over the truth, but usually manages to pick himself up, walk over or around it, and carry on. I think if we were to stop and pick it up to carry it with us we would be far better off, but there in lays the problem, what is the truth and what is disguesed to appear to be true? We all have to decide that for ourselves and then make our own choices. We might at times carry the mis-truth with us and try to sell it to others as our divide truth. We can only hope that through the meeting of others on our lifes journey that they will help us to realize that what we see and carry as the truth is nothing more than a pack of lies, and hopefully we can drop it where no one else will be harmed by it or by those that still profess its falseness as the truth. The adventures we go on are not always what people will have us think they are.

As Batman's dad said to him... Why do we fall Bruce? So, we can get back up. Or something like that. :-)
