Andy and Leora Nowicki are in the process of being evicted from Cedar Village, their apartment in Newington's senior housing complex. The reason: Andy, a decorated war veteran, who is 89 (until Sept. 4) and missing part of his leg from a war wound, was smoking too close to the building in violation of rules. They are photographed at their apartment close to where he had his eventful cigarette. (Rick Hartford, Hartford Courant) http://articles.courant.com/2013-08-23/community/hc-newington-evict...
The housing authority of Newington, CT is proceeding with the eviction of 90 year old, WWII vet Andy Nowicki for violating the community’s smoking policy.
The authority allows smoking outside and away from windows, but Nowicki has extreme trouble moving due to war injuries and his advanced age. On top of that, his wife of the same age has advances Alzheimer’s.
“I’m appalled and disgusted that someone would do this to another human being,” said their daughter, Janet. “She (her mother) thinks she’s going to jail. If they’re supposed to serve somebody it’s supposed to be me.”
A hearing is set for the Purple Heart recipient on Sept. 17th.

Eviction proceedings are continuing against a disabled World War II veteran because of his cigarette smoking, the Newington, Conn., housing authority said.
The housing authority seeks to evict Andy Nowicki, 90, for continuing to violate a policy against smoking in the breezeway of his apartment in the state Veterans Home. The rule requires smokers to be outdoors and at least 10 feet from windows.
