Dear friends,

Before ending this thread I would like to post a few more works by Thomas Cole that somehow have not been shown so far in spite of their particular beauty. See for example "The Past" and "The Present" below, which evidence Cole's interest in the action of time. The other two will be shown in my next post.

Thomas Cole - The Past (oil on canvas, 1838)

Thomas Cole -
The Present (oil on canvas, 1838)

Two more works here. Note that other than the trees adorning the channel sides, vegetation is absent in the first one. Conversely, the view of the valley dominates the second one with just the small temple visible on top.

Thomas Cole - The Architect's Dream (oil on canvas, 1840)

Thomas Cole - The Vale and Temple of Segeste, Sicily (
oil on canvas, 1844)

Miguel,

More treats to savour.

It takes a lot of these paintings before you can start to understand Cole's mind a little.

Such wonderful contrasts.

You can sense the lonliness or the temperature or the time of day. These are the signature of a great natural artist.

Cole is up there among the greats. Not only technique but imagination.

Roger

Well Roger,

What can I, or anyone, add to your words? Yes, these works speak volumes. If you are looking for ability to communicate loneliness or isolation, for example, I cannot think of a better case than Cole's
Vale and Temple of Vesta in Segeste; as to imagination, his Architect's Dream excels. The touch of genius can be found in both masterworks as well: the small temple in the distance with the little man looking at it from afar in the former, the hazy pyramid and the curtains framing the whole in the latter. And while one may not feel particularly impressed by The Past individually, The Present, again, speaks volumes in regard to a painting atmosphere.

I remain in awe every time I come to watch these
masterworks. To me, they, like most of Thomas Cole's paintings, are the epitome of greatness in art in every sense.

As usual, thank you Roger for your great contributions and feedback all along this thread.

Miguel
