Myrna, here is yet another list of companies that do not abide by the rules but do as they please.

7 Companies Polluting the World Without Consequences

The only thing more horrifying than rampant industrial pollution is pollution without consequences. Yet, companies across the globe freely dump toxic substances into the environment and get off with minimal punishments, sometimes even walking away from a pollution incident without being held accountable. That leaves residents, and governments, with the bill for cleaning up potentially life-threatening environmental pollution, a process that may take decades. Take a look at some of the worst offenders.

1. Williams Energy

This company’s in the news this week thanks to a benzene spill near Parachute, Colorado. Williams processes fracked natural gas and managed to spill almost 250 barrels of mixed natural gas liquid, which inevitably made its way into the waterway. Two months later, residents are waiting for an explanation — and for punishments for Williams Energy. Lawmakers in the state have just addressed an outdated law capping fines at $10,000, but their actions are meaningless unless the state is ready to take action and actually levy those fines.

2. Northrop Grumman

The aerospace giant generates tremendous amounts of pollution in the course of its daily operations, including at a now abandoned facility in Calverton, New York. As is often the case with industrial pollution, initial evaluations of the site indicated something was going wrong, but now public health officials are realizing that the size of the company’s pollution plume may be much larger than previously estimated. Volatile organic compounds are saturating the groundwater, and no matter how wide and deep officials drill in search of clean water, they’re turning up more pollution. The Navy’s responsible for the cleanup bill here, but Northrop’s operations certainly haven’t been limited to this site.

3. General Electric

It took 30 years, but GE is finally being called to task for its extensive pollution of the Hudson River. The fight over GE’s pollution was one of the seminal battles of the environmental movement, pulling together activists who used a variety of organizing tactics to force the company to take responsibility. Now, that victory is already ringing bittersweet, as the EPA is in the process of relaxing the cleanup requirements, relieving responsibilities for GE without ensuring the river will be safely restored.

4. Dow Chemical

Dow’s polluting activities are legendary — this is the firm behind the horrific Bhopal disaster, for example. But the company is spewing dioxins in waterways, among many other pollution offenses, and regulators seem to be prepared to allow that to keep happening. In fact, the Supreme Court granted Dow what amounts to a free license to pollute despite objections from activists, pollution victims and environmental defense organizations. Institutional support for polluters makes it hard for citizens to fight them, let alone hold them accountable.

5. Rio Tinto

This Australian company’s so infamous, its polluting activities have actually inspired a campaign,No Dirty Gold, centered around cleaning up the mining industry and getting consumers involved in anti-pollution work. Across the world, Rio Tinto is polluting communities with toxic chemicals used in metals extraction and processing, in addition to engaging in blatant human rights violations, particularly in the Global South. Yet, the company remains a powerhouse in the industry, in no small part thanks to relief from fines and regulation provided by friendly politicians.

6. Koch Industries

Seeing this firm on the list probably won’t surprise you, and it might not shock you that this firm is very good at using its lobbying skills to dodge pollution fines. Koch Industries isn’t afraid of throwing its weight around to have fines reduced or rescinded, even as it cuts a swath of pollution across the U.S. At the same, the Koch family is extending its reach into a wide variety of markets and industries including newspapers, making it harder for ordinary citizens to understand the full extent of its polluting activities, human rights violations and abuses of power, because it controls the source of information and exchange in some communities.

7. U.S. Steel

When pollution is effectively your business, you tend to argue against limitations on pollution across your working area, especially state-mandated limits on individual pollution. U.S. Steel has been fighting attempts to regulate pollution in several states, including Indiana, where environment advocates have called for a crackdown on the company’s operations. They note that allowing U.S. Steel to continue discharging harmful materials like mercury into the Great Lakes causes tremendous environmental harm, and it has had ample opportunities to clean up its act on its own: it’s time for the company to get serious.

Want to see some more heavy polluters? The Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts generates an annual “Toxic 100” list with details on major sources of pollution. You might find it a helpful consumer guide as well as an eye-opening look at the state of pollution in the U.S. and around the world.

Miguel

I have this list, too. I was planning to send it out with email addresses and phone numbers included but first I wanted to give my email list a rest from all the March Against Monsanto stuff I have been sending them. If a person overdoes it, they will just hit Delete as soon as they see who the email is from and some may be doing that already. I've had some good feedback from my list in the past so I must be doing something right.

When I do the list for these Senators, I'll post it here, too.

Helen

71 U.S. Senators Voted in Favour of Monsanto and Here’s the List—Recognize Any?

This went around Facebook yesterday. I was disappointed to see a few familiar names that I hoped I wouldn’t, and one I half-expected but isn’t there—Senator Jeff Flake, of Arizona.

You may want to check it out so you know who not to re-elect—if it comes to that. (list is below)

You may even want to give them a call… a little rant, if you will, to let them know how you really feel about their treasonous actions on the job—paid by wages YOU’RE providing.

How to contact your senators:
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

The Monsanto 71 – Sellout Senators Shame Themselves by Siding with Monsanto on GMO Labeling Bill

(NaturalNews) The U.S. Senate recently had an opportunity to vote on a farm bill amendment that would have supported the rights of states to mandate GMO labeling laws. The amendment,S.AMDT.965, was introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders with the aim “…to permit States to require that any food, beverage, or other edible product offered for sale have a label on indicating that the food, beverage, or other edible product contains a genetically engineered ingredient.”

This amendment quickly separated the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, on which U.S. senators believe in the rights of the people vs. the domination of corporations like Monsanto. Astonishingly, it also revealed that the two darling senators of the liberty movement — Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Ted Cruz — were willing to sell out the people and vote in favor of Monsanto. (They both voted against the amendment to allow states to set GMO labeling laws.)

In all, seventy-one U.S. Senators, both democrats and republicans, voted against that amendment, selling out the American people to the interests of Monsanto. Many said they did so because they didn’t want food labeling to be fragmented state by state. Food labeling is an issue the FDA should tackle, they explained. Yet the FDA is just another corporate sellout, we all know.

Waiting around for the FDA to mandate GMO labeling is as foolish as waiting around for the Democratic party to endorse the Bill of Rights and follow the Constitution. Or waiting around for Republicans to endorse gay marriage of illegal immigrants on food stamps. It ain’t gonna happen, folks. The FDA has long sold out to corporate interests, and it is involved in making sure the American people have no real clue what they’re eating.

71 Senators Betray the People and Sell Out to Monsanto

The only way to get GMOs labeled is to get it done state by state, and these 71 U.S. Senators have now thrown down the gauntlet, stating they believe states have no right to mandate GMO labeling at the local level!

Keep that in mind the next time Rand Paul or Ted Cruz talks about “liberty and justice” Where was their justice on the issue of GMO labeling? How does keeping people in the dark on what they’re eating create a more free society?

For God’s sake, what does it take to get somebody in Washington D.C. to consistently and unswervingly vote on the side of liberty and freedom every single time? (Bring back Ron Paul!)

The “Monsanto 71

“Today, Natural News publishes the list of these 71 U.S. senators, and we will re-publish this list several times leading up to the 2014 elections. Our goal is to make sure these senators change their position on GMO labeling or lose their seats if they don’t change.

Yes, it is true that many of these senators have done commendable work on other issues. Sen. Grassley, for example, has a solid track record of investigating the FDA and blowing the whistle on other federal fiascos.

But there is no excuse for betraying the American people on this issue. There is no excuse for selling out to Monsanto and the GMO industry. Don’t the American people deserve to know what they are eating? Don’t moms of autistic children deserve to have accurate food labels so they can avoid bt toxinwhen shopping for their kids?

And my message to the Monsanto 71 is that you’d better rethink your positions very carefully(especially Cruz, Paul and Grassley). Your vote puts you on the wrong side of history… and the wrong side of public opinion. We expect better of you. We expect you to be champions for the People, not puppets for Monsanto.

Sure, for senators like McCain and McCaskill, we expect them to be sellouts. Their souls are already slated to rot in Hell for their conscious commitment to evil. But for those who offer real hope for liberty — like Cruz and Ryan — we expect you to do better!

If you continue to disappoint us on this issue, we will fight like mad to remove you from office at the next voting opportunity. And for me personally, as the editor of Natural News, there are only two issues that really determine our endorsements for the next election: GMO labeling and Second Amendment. We the People want our food labeled and our rifles protected. We want the freedom that comes from government getting out of our private lives but the accountability that comes from government forcing large corporations to at least tell the truth about what’s in the food they’re selling us.

Yes, government has a role in a free society: Protect liberties from tyranny and protect consumersfrom corporate deceptions. Regardless of party affiliation, Senators who endorse GMO labeling while protecting the Bill of Rights will receive support from Natural News. Those who do not will be publicly shamed for selling out.

Hello everyone

At the bottom of this post is a list of Senators who voted against the State labeling bill. There are also some examples of letters to send to Senators. Some of this post may be a repeat of what Miguel posted. Sorry about that but I am too tired to sort it all out. I hope you will remember to pass this on to everyone you can think of. Thanks!

Helen

Senator Bernie Sanders (one of the good guys (I - VT) introduced a farm bill amendment, S.AMDT.965, which would "...permit States to require that any food, beverage, or other edible product offered for sale have a label on indicating that the food, beverage, or other edible product contains a genetically engineered ingredient."

43 Republicans and 28 Democrats voted against the amendment giving Monsanto the victory. Now the federal government of the USA is who decides 1) if GMOs should be labeled and 2) when. Monsanto won! They know they have the federal government and the FDA in their pocket. If this law stays, you will never see proper labeling. These 71 Senators let down the people. They argued that the FDA should be the one to decide for or against labeling. The problem, the man who runs the FDA is a Monsanto man. His name is Taylor. The FDA is almost entirely run by people from Big Corporations which deal with food, farming, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, all of which want less and less labeling of ALL their brews and potions.

Listen to what Cenk Uygur (Hannity - YoungTurks) says on this >>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Etg-WT0iYvk

If you want to see Bernie Sanders introducing the amendment, go to this video >>>

The woman senator in Cenk's video was Debbie Stabenow. Here is what the Huffington Post wrote in a recent article....

"But Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the chair of the Agriculture Committee, argued that the measure "is not germane to the farm bill" in the first place. She also said the labels run counter to science and the public interest in healthy food.

"This particular amendment would interfere with the FDA's science-based process to determine what food labeling is necessary for consumers," Stabenow said.

"It's also important to note that around the world now we are seeing genetically modified crops that have the ability to resist crop diseases and improve nutritional content and survive drought conditions in many developing countries," she added. "We see wonderful work being done by foundations like the Gates Foundation and others, that are using new techniques to be able to feed hungry people," she said, although it was not clear how labeling would affect such efforts.

End of article

This article shows just how stupid the politicians are. She probably has her hand in somebody's pocket.

What the people of the United States (AND Canada) need to do is to let these senators know they won't tolerate this kind of voting against the people and for the Big Corporations. What happens in the US often affects Canadians and vice versa so everyone needs to do this. While you are at it, send a postcard to the Canadian government and tell them you want all products and foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled NOW and that you want to see the end of genetic engineering of crops in Canada. Tell them if they don't think this activity of genetically engineering plants, animals and people will ruin the world, they have not studied the matter and it is their DUTY to learn about it in order to make educated laws. Do not believe the Big Corporations. They have shown us they cannot be trusted.

What we need to do is phone, write and email to every senator who voted against this amendment. IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO JUST CONTACT YOUR OWN SENATOR. Each one of us needs to call, write and email to EVERY senator. Below I have provided the phone number, the address and the email address for each of the 71 senators who voted against this amendment. If you phone, write AND email 7 of them per day, you will have reached all of them in 2 weeks (5 days/week).

Before you start this project, send this email to everyone you know. Then start phoning, writing and emailing to the senators on the list below.

I believe the most convincing letter/postcard is a handwritten one but if your handwriting leaves something to be desired, then type it if you wish. I understand that many of the senators do not open letters (for fear of Anthrax, etc) so I recommend sending a postcard. Then there's no excuse for not having read the message. It does not have to be a fancy postcard. I use 5 x 8 lined index cards like those on which we write recipes.

The best words to use are your own words. Do NOT use swear or curse words! You lose credibility when you curse. For those who just don't know what to write here are a few examples.

Here's a few examples of what you might write..

First letter.....

This is to let you know I did not appreciate your vote against allowing each of the states to enact mandatory labeling of foods made from genetically engineered ingredients. Monsanto is one of the most evil companies in the world and if you don't know that, you have not done your homework. Do not trust them to have the peoples' interests at heart.

Second letter....

I want to see ALL genetically engineered foods labeled ..not next year or years down the road. I want it to start NOW.

Third letter....

You are the most sickening excuse for a politician I ever saw ...when you voted against allowing the states to enact their own labeling laws in this country. We want ALL GMO's AND OTHER SUCH INGREDIENTS to be CLEARLY LABELED!! If you don't vote for the people, then I won't be voting for you next time.

Fourth letter....

You voted against allowing the states to enact labeling of foods in their respective jurisdictions, in particular, the labeling of genetic engineered foods and ingredients. Do you realize that what is happening in this world cannot go on forever? The Big Corporations must be stopped!! We cannot let them go on dumping tons and tons of poisons on the world EVERY YEAR!! They are ruining our seeds, our soil and our world! AND OUR HEALTH AND THAT OF OUR CHILDREN.

Fifth letter....

All foods that contain genetically engineered ingredients MUST be labeled NOW. Also stop the patenting and growing of ALL GMO's before it is too late. If you don't think this activity of genetically engineering plants, animals and people will ruin the world, then you have not studied both sides of the matter. It is your DUTY to learn about it in order to make educated laws. Start by going to www.responsibletechnology.org and learn the truth about GMO's for yourself. Don't depend on Big Industry to educate you. They are dumping tons and tons of toxic chemicals on the world every year. How long do you think that can go on? They are lying to you and cannot be trusted. Even their "science" is a lie in many cases. Listen to what this Canadian scientist says about GMO's, etc >>> www.youtube.com/watch?v=_haVyyFfnA8 Listen to Parts 4, 5 and 6. Do you even know what GMO means?

Reword the above as you see fit. If you have some good ideas for letters, please send them to me.

If we do nothing else, we all need to bombard Debbie Stabenow with calls, emails and regular-post mail. You might say something like this....

Ms Stabenow, with all due respect, you are the dumbest person to walk in the Senate if you believe what you said about GMO's and the labeling of them. It shows you know nothing about GMO's!

GMO's are ruining people's lives!! and the world. Because of GMO's, tons and tons of toxic chemicals are being dumped on the world. Did you know that? How long do you think the world can sustain that?

It has been proven that GMO's cause huge, ugly tumors in rats who are fed these GMO's. Animals fed GMO's produce less offspring. The GMO crops do not produce more food.

If something goes wrong with GMO crops, millions more could die than if they had no GMO's. As we speak, thousands and thousands of farmers in India have committed suicide because of Monsanto's heavy handed tactics. Did you know that Bill Gates invested 500 million dollars in Monsanto shares?

If you were to study both sides of the GMO story, you would see how GMO grain places hardships on poor farmers who can hardly afford to save seeds let alone pay the exorbitant prices for seeds from Monsanto.

To hear the other side of the story, go to >> www.responsibletechnology.org You said,"...the labels run counter to science and the public interest in healthy food...". What a lie!! Labels do NOT run counter to science. If you believe that, you shouldn't be allowed in our government. You are either really dumb or you lie a lot. Labels don't hurt the public; they only help. IT IS LABELING THAT IS IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST.

Even with labeling the Big Corporations are sticking it to us. Imagine what would happen if they didn't have to put anything on their labels except their name. For example, they are required to label MSG (monosodium glutamate) now. This is a toxin that causes people to eat more and gain weight and it is addictive. Most of us are obese in this country. They know it is not good for us. Yet they insist on putting it in everything! They call it different names so we won't know we are eating it. You ca n eat unlabeled food but I won't be eating it.

They add Aspartame and Sucralose (both toxins) to our foods ...with labeling. Imagine what they will do if they don't have to label each ingredient! They lie, they trick us and they do whatever it takes to sell their garbage to people. And when these people get sick, guess who pays the bill.

WE WANT ALL FOODS LABELED FOR EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY GMO'S!!

REMEMBER ...FIRST, SEND THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE, OK?

Now, here`s the names of the 71 Senators who voted against the labeling of GMO`s. Do the best that you can.

In my last post the names of the Senators and other info is readable but it turns out better from email to email so if you would like, I could send you a list of them from my personal email address. Write me at zhebee@yahoo.com
