6 Problems Caused by Shrinking Biodiversity

Written by David DeFranza

Estimates of species loss are, without a doubt, staggering. In 2007, Sigmar Gabriel, the Federal Environment Minister of Germany, cited estimates that up to 30% of all species will be extinct by 2050. Others have estimated that as many as 140,000 species are lost each year. The alarming trends have led some to declare the current period the “Sixth Great Extinction.”

But, extinctions—even mass extinction events—are not new. Though the current trend is caused, undeniably, by human action—through poaching, habitat destruction, pollution, and anthropogenic climate change, among others—mass reductions in biodiversity can—and have—occur without human interference.

The question then, is what does humanity lose when global biodiversity is significantly reduced?

Simply: A lot. Here are six significant human problems caused by reduced biodiversity:

1. Economic Cost of Lost Biodiversity

Topping the list, of course, is the monetary value of biodiversity around the world. In terms of ecosystem services—functions like pollination, irrigation, soil reclamation and other things that would have to be paid for if nature couldn’t take care of it on its own—the value of global biodiversity has been estimated in the trillions. Because of this, deforestation alone has been estimated to cost between $2-5 trillion annually worldwide.

Russians protest election fraud

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin strongly criticized U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Dec. 8, accusing her of encouraging and funding Russians protesting election fraud, and warned of a wider Russian crackdown on dissent.

The post-election protests in Moscow drew thousands and continued for several days in the biggest ever challenge to Putin, reflecting a growing public frustration with his rule that may complicate his bid to reclaim the presidency in next March's vote. Death Toll Rises to 5,000 in Syria

The death toll in the nine-month anti-government uprising in Syria is now over 5,000. United Nations High Commissioner For Human Righs Navi Pillay reported the sharply higher figure on Monday, a week after the Arab League announced harsh economic sanctions against the authoritarian regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Just at the start of December, the UN had cited the figure of 4,000 dead.

The last time that Pillay had briefed the UN security council in August, she had reported that the death tool was 2,000.

At least 300 children are among the dead and more than 14,000 have been detained and many tortured. While Pillay noted that opposition groups including army defectors in the Free Syrian Army have increased their attacks on Syrian security forces, she also expressed grave concern about the situation in the besieged city, a center of the protests that began in mid-March. Over 12,400 have also fled into neighboring countries since the uprising began, with many now living in refugee camps in Turkey.

While the US and a number of European countries have been urging that the UN take far stronger measures against Syria, China and Russia vetoed a security council resolution condemning the bloodshed in Syria last month. India, South Africa, and Brazil also strongly opposed any formal resolution, saying that such could be “a first step to a Western campaign for regime change.”

Pillay also said that she recommended that the security council refer Syria to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. A report by Human Rights Watch has spelled out numerous charges of torture and inhumane treatment of Syrian citizens in detention. As Philippe Bolopion, UN director for Human Rights Watch, said,

“History will judge harshly those who still choose to look the other way. Inaction is not an option any more.”

General Strike and Municipal Elections

Syrians were to vote in municipal elections on Monday but many shuttered their businesses and kept their children home from school in observation of a general strike and as a “show of civil disobedience against the government.”

In the municipal elections, 14 million Syrians were to vote for 2,889 candidates vying for 17,588 seats. While the head of the elections committee, Khalaf al-Ezzawi, said that the voting was carried out “in a democratic spirit” with a “good” turnout, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that at lead 15 people were killed in Homs and also in the northern province of Idlib. In the capital of Damascus and in Dara’a, many were said to observe the general strike. Activists mocked the elections on Facebook pages:

“The election farce organised by the authorities was a failure in the city of Deir Ezzor where we think the turnout was no more than one per cent. The roads were empty the whole day,” an activist said of the vote in the eastern city.

The Britain-based Observatory said authorities “forced dozens of people” in Idlib to vote despite raging violence in the northwestern province where forces killed three people in an early morning raid.

Opposition activists are hopeful that the strike will continue and spread, thereby adding to the economic pressure on a government that is already contending with international sanctions and increasing isolation. Troops supporting Assad are taking revenge on striking business owners with at least 178 stores in the southern city of Dara’a reportedly burned down for observing the strike.

David Wilcock: CONFIRMED: The Trillion Dollar Lawsuit That Could End Financial Tyranny

David Wilcock: CONFIRMED: The Trillion Dollar Lawsuit That Could End Financial Tyranny

12-12-2011, Divine Cosmos

http://www.divinecosmos.com/start-here/davids-blog/995-lawsuit-end-tyranny

It could be the biggest, most explosive story in modern history. We are just starting to put the pieces together and understand what is going on in the occult financial geopolitical scene, and how a 117-nation alliance is working to free the Earth from financial tyranny.

IT MAY BE THE BEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO US

As I write these words, the average person is coming face-to-face with disturbing, if not dire news.

Not only could the disastrous financial debacle of 2008 be about to repeat itself, it may even be a lot worse this time.

As of November 28, 2011, media outlets announced that we could be as little as ten days away from a complete collapse of the Euro — and with it, much of the rest of the world’s economies could be pulled down as well.

Yet another grandiose “bailout” maneuver was used to buy some time — but this has done little to address the gnawing unease in the public, particularly as the saber-rattling in the Middle East is again reaching a fever pitch.

This, at least, is the mainstream media’s perspective on what is going on — and thankfully, it is completely baseless.

In classic Orwellian terms — such as “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength” — the mainstream media’s “Global Financial Collapse” cry of doom may very well be the best thing that’s ever happened to us.

At least in any known, recorded history.

A VERY MYSTERIOUS, VERY QUIET AND VERY LARGE-SCALE FINANCIAL SCANDAL

You are about to dive into a story that, for quite some time now, has been nothing but a great-sounding idea — a wonderful “what if.” Almost nothing of this story could be found in the mainstream media.

However, the bizarre origin of the story did briefly find its way into FOX’s Glenn Beck show in 2009.

I highly recommend you watch this first, as it will draw you directly into the mystery — which flickered for the briefest moment in mainstream media, only to disappear into shuddering silence:

Notice that Beck says FOX contacted the Treasury Department about this case, and received an official blow-off letter in response — basically saying they had “no comment” on this 134 billion dollars in US bonds, seized at the Italian border, as it was “evidence in an ongoing investigation.”

Beck then goes on to put up the numbers of which countries hold the largest numbers of US bonds. In order, they are China at 763.5 billion, Japan at 685.9 billion, the United Kingdom at 152.8 billion, Russia at 137.0 billion and Brazil at 126.0 billion.

Based on the public, unclassified numbers, 134.5 billion dollars in US bonds could only have been produced by Russia, the UK, Japan or China… no one else. The amount of money is so huge that if Russia produced it, they would only have 2.5 billion dollars in US bonds left over!

Joe Wiesenthal, the editor of BusinessInsider.com, said that whether this was a government dumping its bonds or a counterfeit operation, it was “gigantic” in scope and “unlike anything we’ve ever seen — not just in size but also in sophistication.”

According to Wiesenthal, in order to counterfeit these bonds, “it would be the kind of technology you would expect only a government to have.” Wiesenthal also believes the 1934 issuance date on the bonds suggests they may be elaborate forgeries.

OTHER LINKS TO COVERAGE OF THE ORIGINAL SCANDAL

Once you know what you are looking for, you can do some digging and find all the most significant articles published online about this strange story when it first broke in June, 2009.

Here is the original Bloomberg article on the scandal:

Here is a Daily Kos summary of links describing what may have happened:

Here is an Asia Times article on the issue, which has a lot more detail:
http://www.asianews.it/index.php?l=en&art=15456&size=A

In these two articles, “The Underground Investor” analyzed the evidence and clearly established how strange this whole story really was:

THE LAWSUIT IS NOW A REALITY FOR ALL TO SEE

Ever since this bizarre event happened, the only follow-up to the story has been in the form of an elaborate amount of ‘insider’ information leaked by Benjamin Fulford — the former Asia-Pacific bureau chief for Forbes Magazine — on a week-by-week basis.

Finally, the lawsuit at the epicenter of this investigation has now become a tangible reality — validating everything Fulford has been saying about this mysterious case since it originally started.

Looming storm clouds threatened to demolish Fulford’s credibility in a single crash of lightning as the all-important date of November 15th, 2011 came and went — with nothing to show for it — after years of fanfare and buildup on his websites.

However, on November 23, 2011, the clouds parted. A vast, 111-page legal complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. This complaint is now a provable matter of public record… as you are about to see.

I have since discovered hundreds of pages of intricate, complex material to read, firsthand eyewitnesses to interview, and official documents to scrutinize. There is no lack of “homework” to be done for those who are interested.

Canada Drops Out Of Kyoto Protocol

The worst kept secret in Canadian politics became official yesterday when the Harper government announced its withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol. In a statement made in the foyer of the House of Commons, Environment Minister Peter Kent noted that “Kyoto is not the path forward for a global solution to climate change” and indicated that “Canada will work towards a legally binding agreement to address global emissions that allows us to continue creating jobs and economic growth.”

What Would Staying in Kyoto Mean for Canada?

In his statement, Kent said that the Conservative government has “taken action since 2006 to make real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.” He repeated this several times, without providing any examples of those actions or statistics on the resulting (non existing) decrease in emissions. However, when it comes to what Canada would have to do in order to meet the targets under Kyoto, he had no problem giving specifics:

To meet the targets under Kyoto for 2012 would be the equivalent of:

  • Either removing every car, truck, ATV, tractor, ambulance, police car and vehicle of every kind from Canadian roads
  • Or, closing down the entire farming and agricultural sector and cutting heat to every home, office, hospital, factory and building in Canada.

The cost of not taking this type of radical and irresponsible action?

The loss of thousands of jobs or the transfer of $14 BILLION from Canadian taxpayers to other countries – the equivalent of $1600 from every Canadian family — with no impact on emissions or the environment.

That’s the Kyoto cost to Canadians.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May disagrees with Kent’s statement. In a Green Party media release she said: “It is simply outrageous disinformation that there is a $14 billion cost to staying in Kyoto. Staying in the Kyoto Protocol will not cost us a cent.”

The Cost of Rising Emissions

May goes on to explain that it will, in fact, cost us billions “if we do nothing to address climate change.” According to the Green Party:

The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, in its report “Paying the Price: The Economic Impacts of Climate Change for Canada”, estimates that the cost of Canada’s failure to act on climate change will range from $5 billion per year by 2020 to as high as $91 billion per year by 2050. Impacts on forests and coastal areas will be particularly felt in terms of hits to the Canadian economy. An increase in flooding, wildfires, heat waves, and poor air quality has already resulted in increased death and destruction of property. Canada’s insurance sector is seeing costs from storms and wildfire escalating rapidly.

The difference, of course, is that Conservative Party voters are likely more sympathetic when the government needs to use taxpayer dollars to respond to a flood or forest fire (especially when it is in their backyard) than they are when the government uses taxpayer dollars to invest in projects that will reduce emissions (especially if that means less Big Oil and more green energy).

Hopes of Progress Going Up in a Cloud of Emissions

Canadians who thought that a legally binding agreement such as Kyoto would force the government to take action are sorely disappointed. Not only is the government not taking action to reduce emissions (according to Associated Press, Canadian carbon emissions are up 35% since 1990, when they were targeted to be 6% lower than 1990 levels by 2012), but they are also violating Canadian law by withdrawing from Kyoto.

The Harper government promised to be “tough on crime.” Maybe there will be some room in the new jails for the environmental criminals to join the marijuana growers.
