Erdogan to be sworn in Monday with new powers

Ankara (AFP) - President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will on Monday be sworn in for a second mandate as Turkey's head of state after his election triumph last month, assuming sweeping powers granted under a new constitution, a presidential source said.

Erdogan, who has dominated Turkey first as premier from 2003 then president from 2014, scored an outright victory in the first round of the June 24 elections with 52.6 percent of the vote.

Those elections were particularly crucial as it is only after the polls that the new presidential system, which was agreed in a 2017 referendum and opponents fear will lead to one man rule, comes into force.

Erdogan will be sworn at the parliament, a presidential source, who asked not to be named, told AFP. State media reports said the oath ceremony would be at 1300 GMT.

Two hours later a "transition ceremony" marking the shift to the new system will take place at his vast presidential palace on the outskirts of Ankara, Anadolu news agency reported.

The Turkish leader is expected to deliver a speech during the ceremony to be attended by leading figures from the business, art and sports as well as foreign heads of state, according to the Hurriyet daily.

The ceremony will be followed by a dinner and then Erdogan is due to announce his new cabinet, it said.

Under the new system, Erdogan will enjoy greater powers with the authority to appoint and sack ministers, judges and other state officials.

The post of prime minister, currently held by Erdogan's ally Binali Yildirim, is to be scrapped as of Monday, leaving the president in full and sole charge of the government.

A decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday formalised the transfer of some duties and authorities of the cabinet to the president.

Also, the references in certain laws like "cabinet" and "prime ministry" have been changed to say "president" and the "presidency," according to the decree.

The new regulations will come into force on the day the president is sworn in, Anadolu said.

The new parliament is meanwhile expected to be sworn in two days earlier on Saturday.

Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has failed to secure a majority in the 600-seat parliament on its own in the June elections. But it does enjoy a clear majority within a pact with its partner the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

WHO IS ANGELA PONCE? MODEL WILL BE FIRST TRANS WOMAN TO COMPETE IN MISS UNIVERSE

BY

A Spanish model is set to become the first transgender woman to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

Angela Ponce was crowned in the countrywide Miss Universe Spain 2018 over the weekend, becoming the first transgender woman to win the title. The 26-year-old beat 22 fellow contestants to claim the top spot in the Spanish city of Tarragona, Pink News reported.

Her win grants Ponce a place to compete in the worldwide Miss Universe contest set to be held in Philippines in December 2018.

Angela Ponce (center), 24, competes in the "Miss World Spain" pageant in Estepona, 26 October, 2015. Ponce is set to become the first transgender woman to compete in Miss Universe.

Transgender contestants were first allowed to compete in Miss Universe six years ago.

The change was enacted after trans contestant Jenna Talackova was disqualified from Miss Universe Canada when organizers discovered she had transitioned from male to female.

After weeks of discussion, LGBT charity GLAAD later persuaded then-owner Donald Trump to open the competition up to trans contestants. In the 2012 Miss Universe Canada contest Talackova placed 12th place, but won Miss Congeniality.

Ponce wrote in Spanish on Instagram that representing the name and colors of Spain at the Miss Universe contest is a “dream.”

“My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community, but also for the entire world,” she said.

In 2015, Ponce competed at the rival Miss World Spain contest as the representative for Cadiz, but lost to Miss Barcelona Mireia Lalaguna.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper 20 Minutos in 2015, Ponce said: "Society is not educated for diversity, it's what made me go public, I mean, here I am and I'm not weird, I just have a different story, a woman who came to life differently but I'm a woman."

Ponce revealed she first began to explore her gender identity aged 11, and completed her transition in April 2014.

If she is victorious, Ponce will follow in the footsteps of over 60 Miss Universe queens. The first was Armi Kuusela, who won the title in 1952. According to the Miss Universe website, the Finnish winner is still active in the pageant scene.

Iran will import goods only from countries that buy its oil – MP

The Energy Committee of Iran has announced that Tehran will buy goods only from those nations which purchase Iranian oil. This follows the US demand from its allies to stop buying Iranian crude.

“We will carry out barter exchange of oil and goods, which means the purchase of goods will depend on the sale of oil,” representative of Iran’s Energy Committee Asadollah Karekhani told ILNA news agency.

“We want to inform our target markets and countries that buy oil from us that we’ll purchase goods from them only if they purchase our oil,” he said, noting that a working group is being formed on barter deals.

Last week, a senior US State Department official told reporters that Washington would try to convince its allies to completely stop buying oil from Iran by early November. Discussions are also being held with other countries, including China.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that if the country's crude oil exports were threatened, the rest of the Middle East's would be as well
.

“Assuming that Iran could become the only oil producer unable to export its oil is a wrong assumption ... The United States will never be able to cut Iran’s oil revenues,”
he said.

Iran is OPEC's second-largest crude exporter with more than 2 million barrels a day.

Rouhani is currently in Europe to gather support ahead of a meeting later this week between Iran and the five global powers that are still party to the 2015 nuclear deal.

Injured woman begs people not to call ambulance because she can’t afford it

A woman trapped between a train and a platform in Boston, with her bone exposed through her thigh, pleaded with bystanders not to call an ambulance, asking them “do you know how much an ambulance costs?”

The accident happened on Friday, and a Boston Globe reporter on the scene described how the woman slipped between the subway train and the platform, trapping her leg. Left “in agony and weeping” as commuters rocked the train back and forth in an effort to free her, she begged them not to call an ambulance, as she said, “It’s $3000...I can’t afford that.”

In a series of follow-up tweets this Tuesday, the reporter explained that the woman was eventually freed from the five-inch gap and suffered no broken bones. Sitting on the platform in pain, she was reportedly crying, worried about how the accident would affect her financially.

Emergency personnel on the scene bandaged the unidentified woman’s wound, and sent her to the hospital. While she had no broken bones, they still said her injuries would require surgery.

According to the reporter, Maria Cramer, the woman’s ambulance ride cost her roughly $1,200, still a hefty fee for anyone. That price tag does not include the cost of actual medical care, room and board at the hospital, drugs, bandages, or ay of the myriad of other expenses that make American healthcare among the most expensive in the world.

Cramer’s tweet went viral, and it is being held up as a damning indictment of the American healthcare system.

People in the US spend more on healthcare than people in other first-world countries. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, hospital costs in America are 60 percent higher than in 12 other developed nations.

People insured under Obamacare are not any better off. The lowest priced ‘bronze’ plans came with deductibles of over $6,000 last year, the third year-on rise in a row for consumers that are covered under the state-provided insurance.
