Mudslides kill hundreds in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone mudslide:
Desperate hunt for 600 people
still missing
By Hilary Clarke and Hilary McGann, CNN

Updated 1451 GMT (2251 HKT) August 15, 2017

CNN - The hunt for survivors of the deadly mudslide in Sierra Leone continued Tuesday as the official death toll rose to 245, with numbers expected to grow and hundreds still missing.

"More bodies have been discovered. The number rose from 205 to 245, the search continued this morning, and we expect that number to rise," Abu Bakarr, spokesman for the Red Cross in Sierra Leone, told CNN on Tuesday.

Rescue workers gather at the summit of a mudslide in Regent, east of Freetown, on Monday.

Heavy rain, normally a blessing at this time of year in West Africa, turned into a nightmare on Monday when flooding caused torrents of mud to wash down Mount Sugar Loaf about five miles outside the capital Freetown, according to government officials and aid agencies.

A chunk of the mountain came down under the force of the water, onto the houses that hugged the slopes, many of them little more than wooden shacks with tin roofs in this desperately poor nation.

"Social welfare is out on the streets of Freetown registering and talking to survivors as we try to ascertain exactly how many people are missing," Abdulai Bayraytay, a spokesman for President Ernest Koroma, told CNN.
He said that a Sierra Leonean and a Chinese construction company had provided heavy-duty excavation equipment to help the military looking for people under the mud and rubble.

Residents and rescuers survey the damage from the mudslide in Regent.

Rescue teams assess the damage near Freetown on Tuesday.
The charity Save the Children confirmed that a staff member and his young children are among the hundreds of people missing.
Another Save the Children staff member, Ramatu Jalloh, was near the scene when the disaster happened.
"We were driving on the main road out of Freetown past Regent when a lady ran onto the road and started gesticulating wildly. She called out to another lady who had been riding a bike in front of us who, after a brief conversation, started crying and looked very upset," she said.
"It was clear from their reactions that something terrible had happened. Soon afterward, another man ran towards our car. He was crying about the number of lives that had been lost."
"As we continued down the road we could see there was a serious issue. Tons of water was rushing across the road, splitting it in half. We contacted the Save the Children office immediately to tell them that something was seriously wrong."
Emergency personnel gather outside the morgue at Freetown's Connaught hospital.

      600 still unaccounted for

All of the 245 bodies located so far have been brought to the central morgue at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, according to Bakarr from the Red Cross.
Another 600 people are still believed to be unaccounted for, and between 2,000 and 3,000 have been displaced, Bakarr said.
"The scenes are heartbreaking, with the sounds of wailing and mourning everywhere as relatives struggle to cope with the loss of loved ones and the complete devastation of their homes and settlements," said James Chifwelu, national director of the charity World Vision in Sierra Leone.
Water overflows the streets in Regent on Monday.
"It's disturbing that so many lives have been lost following this heavy rain and mudslide. But it's most disturbing that many children in their school uniforms were unfortunately fatally caught up in the landslide and many more are homeless, orphaned and will be without food and clothing for days to come. This certainly calls for immediate action.''
It is the rainy season in Sierra Leone and this year has been particularly wet, with Freetown receiving more than 27 inches of rain between July 1 and August 13 -- more than double the average of 11.8 inches, according to the US National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.
CORRECTION: This story has been updated to accurately reflect the amount of rainfall Freetown received between July 1 and August 13.

      WND AT THE WHITE HOUSE

      TRUMP SPECIFICALLY CONDEMNS 'WHITE SUPREMACISTS'

President blasts bigots for hate and CNN's Acosta for 'fake news'

Far-right protesters battle far-left counter protesters Aug. 12, 2017, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

WASHINGTON – President Trump issued a forceful condemnation of white supremacists in the wake of the deadly tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia, after critics claimed his previous remarks blasting “hatred, bigotry and violence” had not been strong enough.

“Racism is evil,” President Trump bluntly stated at the White House Monday, having flown back to Washington during the middle of a vacation in New Jersey.

“And those who cause violence are criminal and thugs,” the president continued, “including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

On Saturday, the president condemned “hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides” after protests by groups including white supremacists turned into violent clashes with counter-protests by groups that included the radical-leftist Antifa.

Democrats and members of the establishment media strongly criticized the president for not specifically condemning white supremacists.

However, Trump reiterated: “As I said on Saturday, we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence. It has no place in America.”

“And, as I have said so many times before,” he continued, “no matter the color of our skin, we all live under the same laws. We all salute the same great flag. And we are all made by the same almighty God.

“We must love each other, show affection for each other and unite together in condemnation of hatred, bigotry and violence. We must rediscover the bonds of love and loyalty that bring us together as Americans,” Trump said.

The major media’s tenacity in wanting to hold Trump accountable for the weekend violence was vividly evidenced in an exchange between the president and CNN White House reporter Jim Acosta.

After the reporter badgered the president as to why he “didn’t condemn those hate groups by name over the weekend,” Trump eventually pointed a finger directly at Acosta and said, “You’re fake news.”

      This was their full exchange:

Acosta: “Mr President, can you explain why you didn’t condemn those hate groups by name over the weekend?”

President Trump: “They have been condemned. They have been condemned.”

Acosta: “Why are we not having a press conference today?”

President Trump: “We had a press conference. We just had a press conference.”

Acosta: “Can we ask you some more questions then, sir?”

President Trump: “It doesn’t bother me at all. But I like real news, not fake news. You’re fake news.”

Trump spars with CNN's Jim Acosta: 'You're fake news'

Trump had made his remarks condemning hate groups in Charlottesville during a hastily arranged White House event, shortly after noon.

The exchange with Acosta occurred at the end of a previously planned 3:00 o’clock media event, in which the president signed a memo cracking down on China’s “laws, policies, practices, and actions related to intellectual property, innovation, and technology.”

Reporters were upset they were not permitted to ask questions even though the White House had termed the event a press conference.

But Trump, in his comments to Acosta, indicated he knew what questions would have been asked, and that he had already answered them.

During his appearance earlier in the day, the president also announced the FBI “has opened a civil rights investigation into the deadly car attack that killed one innocent American and wounded 20 others” in Charlottesville.

Heather Heyer was killed when a protester drove a car into counter-protesters.

“Her death fills us with grief, and we send her family our thoughts, our prayers, and our love,” the president said.

Trump said Heyer and two troopers who died in a helicopter crash “embody the goodness and decency of our nation.”

“In times such as these, America has always shown its true character: responding to hate with love, division with unity, and violence with an unwavering resolve for justice,” said Trump.

“We will spare no resource in fighting so that every American child can grow up free from violence and fear,” he said.

Trump concluded, “We will defend and protect the sacred rights of all Americans, and we will work together so that every citizen in this blessed land is free to follow their dreams in their hearts, and to express the love and joy in their souls.”

Blood Moon Pastor Gives Prophetic Insight Into Coming Solar Eclipse

      JESSILYN JUSTICE

Multiple biblical prophecies could be coming to pass as the sun darkens on August 21 for the historic solar eclipse.

"Well Luke 21:25, Jesus says there will be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars," pastor Mark Biltz, who claims discovery of the four-blood-moon pattern, tells Jim Bakker. "And what do we have? We have solar eclipses, lunar eclipses and the Revelation 12 sign in the heavens."

Biltz says many of today's more gruesome headlines have happened since the four blood moons and point to a time of repentance.

Anonymous shuts down neo-Nazi and KKK websites after Charlottesville rally

      Cara McGoogan
Anonymous has launched a campaign against the alt-right, domestic terrorism and neo-Nazi organisations

Hacktivist collective Anonymous has launched a campaign against alt-right and neo-Nazi groups in the wake of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, which left one woman dead.

The group claimed to have shut down numerous websites associated with the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi organisations following the deadly clashes in Charlottesville.

People affiliated with the group also discovered the real names of dozens of people who had attended the rally, along with their known associations with the extreme movement, and posted them online with pictures.

      about: Anonymous

As it launched the campaign, Anonymous posted a message to the citizens of the Virginia town that said it would fight "domestic terrorism and the alt-right in the wake of the attacks".

"Anonymous has taken steps to remove the websites of these far-right extremists under the banner of #OpDomesticTerrorism," said Anonymous. "Yesterday we were successfully able to shut down multiple servers that promoted and supported the hatred that happened in Charlottesville, as well as those that did not speak out against the domestic terrorist attack.

"We also were successful in outing multiple KKK members and white supremacists. This is merely just the beginning."

The group reported some rally attendees it had named had been let go from their jobs.

Anonymous said the hacked front page of the Daily Stormer website was a hoax Credit: Daily Stormer

Neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer, which publishes white supremacist news and commentary, also appeared to have been taken over by Anonymous. But the group claimed this was a hoax.

On Monday morning, The Daily Stormer's provider said it would block the site within 24 hours after it published a post critical of Heather Heyer, who was killed when a car ploughed into a group of anti-racist counter-protesters, injuring 19 others.

GoDaddy, the domain name registration company that hosts the Daily Stormer, said it had violated its terms and would have to find another provider. A few hours later, the site appeared to have been hacked with a display that read: "This site is now under the control of Anonymous."

"We have all of the details on the servers and will be releasing the data when we feel the time is right," said the post on the website.

Hacked Daily Stormer message purportedly from Anonymous, which it denies

Anonymous denied that it had hacked the Daily Stormer's site as part of is latest operation, saying it was a hoax.

"We have no confirmation that 'Anonymous' is involved yet," said a Twitter account associated with the collective. "Looks more like a Daily Stormer stunt. Wonder if they are having issues finding a new host."

If the Daily Stormer fails to find another hosting service its website will be deleted within 24 hours. The alleged Anonymous message said it would take the site down within the same amount of time.

Anonymous has targeted the KKK before and declared war against Donald Trump. It is known for hacking computer systems to defend human rights, internet freedom and freedom of information. Other recent targets have included ISIL, the Church of Scientology and child pornography sites.

The online protest has been accompanied by a host of anti-fascism protests around the world organised to counteract the white supremacist rally.

Protestors Chase White-Nationalist Organizer From Charlottesville Press Conference

A day after a white-nationalist riot left one dead and dozens injured in Charlottesville, one of the co-organizers of the rally attempted to hold a press conference in the city, but was shouted down and chased away by protestors as he started to address the crowd.

Jason Kessler, who helped coordinate Saturday’s ill-fated “Unite the Right” rally, was slated to speak at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday outside Charlottesville City Hall, but a large number of protestors drowned him out with chants of “Shame!” As protestors crowded Kessler and shouted into his microphone, police had to escort him from the premises while some in the crowd gave chase.

In a video filmed after the event, Kessler claimed that, “Once again, violence is winning out over ideas and the First Amendment,” blaming Charlottesville police for failing to separate him from “the violent mob.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Kessler as a “relative newcomer to the white nationalist scene” who may have been active in Occupy Wall Street before undergoing a political transformation. A University of Virginia graduate, he gained notoriety for his campaign against a black Charlottesville City Council member, who resigned after Kessler surfaced a series of years-old offensive tweets. Kessler was arrested during May’s torchlit rally in Charlottesville that was a precursor to Saturday’s event.
