Iran shows strong hand with strike + impact video
Mon Jun 19, 2017 8:27AM

Top military officials say missiles fired from Iran at Daesh command centers in Syria's Dayr al-Zawr have found their targets with maximum accuracy.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) fired six medium-range missiles which "pounded" the Takfiri group's command headquarters as well as arms and ammunition centers Sunday night, IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif said on Monday.

"According to reliable information, the missile operation against Daesh has been successful," he said. The attack, he said, was "only a fraction of Iran's punitive power against terrorists and other enemies."

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Force, said the missiles were fired from the Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan and flew over Iraq before landing in Syria.

"The UAVs which had been flown from around Damascus to Dayr al-Zawr transmitted the moments of impact to us in Iran," he said, adding "the missiles precisely hit their targets."

According to Fars news agency, which is close to the IRGC, preliminary evidence showed a large number of terrorists had been killed and their weapons destroyed.

The IRGC said the attack, the first of its kind in Iran, was in response to a terrorist operation which claimed the lives of 18 Iranians in Tehran earlier this month.

"Our enemies must know that Tehran is not London and Paris. This was a small job and if they put another foot wrong, more deadly blows will come down on their heads," Hajizadeh said.

Expert examinations of the footage broadcast on state television of the attack identified at least one of the projectiles as the Zolfaqar missile. Among Iran's medium-range missiles, Shahab 2 and Qiam can fly as far as 700 and 800 kilometers respectively.

Zolfaqar is a solid-fueled medium-range ballistic missile (SRBM) that can reach 700 to 750 kilometers and is accurate within 5 to 10 meters. It is Iran’s latest variant of the Fateh-110 missile series — a family of solid-fueled SRBMs that Tehran has refined since the 1990s.

The projectile uses a multiple reentry vehicle payload, featuring a cluster warhead that can shower an area with sub-munitions. That explains why the missile was used against multiple targets in Sunday's attack, including Daesh's command center, gathering points and ammunition depots.

Other features include the missile's radar-evading and anti-jamming properties and operation with mobile and self-propelled light tactical launchers.

"Identifying terrorist bases and possessing intelligence command in this regard is a world of issues. Firing missiles from a 600-700 km range and landing it over a small building carries a message, meaning they would realize where Iran's fineness is," Hajizadeh said.

Couched as Iran's response to Daesh's June 7 attack on the parliament and the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, the rare blitz is seen as conveying far-reaching messages for other players in the Syria conflict.

It came on the same day the US military admitted to having shot down a Syrian jet over Raqqah. Last month, US aircraft bombed a convoy of Syrian tanks after they advanced in an area near the Iraqi and Jordanian border in the wake of Daesh retreats.

“This was just the beginning of revenge on Daesh. A bigger slap is on the way. The supporters of terrorism too should pay heed to the message of Iran’s authority,” former IRGC chief Mohsen Rezaei wrote on his Twitter account.

MP Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini said the IRGC had "disturbed the enemies' sleep in any part of the world," adding the attack was just a slap.

Special adviser to Iran's parliament speaker, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, described it as "a soft warning,” while Iran’s Ambassador to London Hamid Baeedinejad said the strike “manifested the will and capacity of Iran to fight against terrorism and security threats.”

Iran warns ISIS of more missile strikes, says op coordinated with Damascus

Edited time: 19 Jun, 2017 10:42

Tehran has warned ISIS militants that any future attacks on the country will result in powerful strikes against the group. It comes after Iran launched missile strikes on ISIS in retaliation for twin attacks in Tehran earlier this month.

“If they carry out a specific action to violate our security, definitely there will be more launches, with intensified strength,” Gen. Ramazan Sharif of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said on Monday, according to state television, cited by AP.

The IRGC’s press office had a stern warning of its own to those who threaten Iran’s security.

“The IRGC warns the Takfiri terrorists and their regional and trans-regional supporters that they would be engulfed by its revolutionary wrath and flames of the fire of its revenge in case they repeat any such devilish and dirty move in future,” it said, according to Fars News Agency.

The statements come just one day after the Revolutionary Guards confirmed it had launched strikes in retaliation for twin attacks in Tehran earlier this month, which killed 18 people and left more than 50 others wounded. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The Revolutionary Guards said it fired a total of six missiles into Syria’s Deir-ez Zor province on Sunday, from the city of Kermanshah and Iran’s Kurdistan province.

The attack was coordinated with Damascus, according to Sharif.

“The firing of these missiles had previously been coordinated with Syria and the missiles entered the Syrian airspace through Iraq,” he said, as quoted by Tasnim News Agency.

Activists in Syria told AP they had no immediate information on damage or casualties from the strikes, which the Guards claim successfully hit their targets.

Sharif said on Monday, however, that the missiles were not only aimed at sending a message to IS, but also to Riyadh and Washington.

“The Saudis and Americans are especially receivers of this message,” he said. “Obviously and clearly, some reactionary countries of the region, especially Saudi Arabia, had announced that they are trying to bring insecurity into Iran.”

The Revolutionary Guards immediately placed blame on Riyadh after the June 7 attacks, with Saudi Arabia rejecting the claims.

The Iranian government has described the attackers as being “long affiliated with the Wahhabi,” an ultraconservative form of Sunni Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia, but has so far stopped short of directly blaming Riyadh.

Meanwhile, tensions between the US and Iran have mounted since President Donald Trump took office, with the two countries imposing sanctions on one another last month.

The president also put Tehran “on notice” in February after it launched a ballistic missile.

Iran has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile.Should have been thankful for the terrible deal the U.S. made with them!

Trump has also referred to the landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers under the Obama administration as “disastrous” and the “worst deal ever negotiated.”

These words prompted Iran’s defense minister to say that Trump’s election had led to “unease,” and that any war with Iran caused by his administration would “destroy” Israel and smaller Gulf states.

Russia to treat US jets in Syria as 'targets' after America guns down first regime warplane

Communication channel between Washington and Moscow to be suspended immediately

Russia has said it will treat US warplanes operating in parts of Syria where its air forces are also present as “targets” amid a diplomatic row caused by the downing of a Syrian jet.

The country’s defence ministry said it would track US-led coalition aircraft with missile systems and military aircraft, but stopped short of saying it would shoot them down.

A hotline set up between Russia and the US to prevent mid-air collisions will also be suspended.

“All kinds of airborne vehicles, including aircraft and UAVs of the international coalition detected to the west of the Euphrates River will be tracked by the Russian SAM systems as air targets,” the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The warning comes after a US F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian army SU-22 jet on Sunday in the countryside southwest of Raqqa – the first such downing of a Syrian jet by the US since the start of the country’s civil war in 2011.

Washington said the jet had dropped bombs near US-backed forces but Damascus said the plane was downed while flying a mission against Isis militants.

Russia’s defence ministry said the suspension of its communication line with the Americans would begin immediately.

The US did not use its hotline with Russia ahead of the downing of the Syrian government warplane, said the ministry, which accused the US of a “deliberate failure to make good on its commitments” under the deconfliction deal.

“The shooting down of a Syrian Air Force jet in Syria’s airspace is a cynical violation of Syria’s sovereignty,” the ministry said.

“The US’ repeated combat operations under the guise of ‘combating terrorism’ against the legitimate armed forces of a UN member-country are a flagrant violation of international law and an actual military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic.”

Theresa May appealed to Russia to continue the use of “deconfliction” measures over the skies of Syria to reduce the risk of misunderstandings in what is a crowded airspace.

Russia, which has been providing air cover for Syria’s President, Bashar al-Assad, since 2015, has an agreement with the US aimed at preventing incidents involving either country’s warplanes engaged in operations in Syria.

Downing the jet was akin to “helping the terrorists that the US is fighting against”, Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, said.

A statement released by US Central Command on Sunday said the Syrian jet was “immediately shot down... in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defence of Coalition partnered forces”.

“The Coalition’s mission is to defeat Isis in Iraq and Syria. The Coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat,” it added.

“The Coalition presence in Syria addresses the imminent threat Isis in Syria poses globally. The demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward Coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-Isis operations will not be tolerated.”

Seattle Police Shoot And Kill 30-Year-Old Mother Who Called Them For Help

Latifah Muhammad

Seattle police fatally shot a 30-year-old mother who called them to her apartment for help. The victim dialed 911 to report an attempted burglary Sunday (June 18) morning when she was gunned down while her children were in the unit.

According a Seattle police spokesperson Mark Jamieson, two officers responded to the call because of concerns over a previous emergency call to the house.

After arriving to the apartment at around 10: 00 a.m., cops claim the woman “confronted” them with a knife. The department confirmed that both officers were white.

“At some point the 30-year-old female was armed with a knife,” Jamieson told reporters. “Both officers had to fire their service weapons striking the individual.

“Unfortunately it is a fatality,” Jamieson continued. “Officers immediately performed first aid until the fire department arrived, but the fire department declared her deceased at the scene.”

The children were “unharmed” in the incident, and are in the care of loved ones. Family members say the children were two boys and a girl ages 11, 4, and 1.

Authorities are still trying to determine if they witnessed the shooting, Jamieson said.

“As you can imagine, this is going to be a very thorough investigation,” he added.

The woman, identified by family members as Charleena Lyles, is said to have battled mental illness over the last year and previously feared that her children, one of whom had Down Syndrome, would be taken away.

“She was not a person you would fear or feel intimidated by,” Lyles’ brother Domico Jones said.

Monika Williams, Lyles sister, told reporters that her there was “no reason” for her sister to be “shot in front of her babies.” Williams also revealed that Lyles was pregnant.

“Even if my sister had a knife in her hand, she weighs like nothing, even if she’s soaking wet,” Williams said. “There’s no way you could’ve taken a taser and taken her down? There’s no way you could’ve taken a baton and knocked the knife out of her hand?”

The officers involved in the incident are expected to be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
