Russia blocks U.N. Security Council condemnation of Syria attack

By Michelle Nichols
| UNITED NATIONS

Russia blocked a Western-led effort at the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday to condemn last week's deadly gas attack in Syria and push Moscow's ally President Bashar al-Assad to cooperate with international inquiries into the incident.

It was the eighth time during Syria's six-year-old civil war that Moscow has used its veto power on the Security Council to shield Assad's government.

In the latest veto, Russia blocked a draft resolution backed by the United States, France and Britain to denounce the attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun and tell Assad's government to provide access for investigators and information such as flight plans.

The toxic gas attack on April 4 prompted the United States to launch missile strikes on a Syrian air base and widened a rift between the United States and Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that trust had eroded between the two countries under U.S. President Donald Trump.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson echoed that comment after meetings with Russian leaders in Moscow, saying that relations are at a low point with a low level of trust. Tillerson called for Assad to eventually relinquish power.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, called on Moscow to stop protecting Assad and said the United States wants to work with Russia toward a political solution for Syria.

"Russia once again has chosen to side with Assad, even as the rest of the world, including the Arab world, overwhelmingly comes together to condemn this murderous regime," Haley told the 15-member Security Council.

"If the regime is innocent, as Russia claims, the information requested in this resolution would have vindicated them."

Russia's deputy U.N. envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, said the draft resolution laid blame prior to an independent investigation.

"I'm amazed that this was the conclusion. No one has yet visited the site of the crime. How do you know that?" he said.

He said the U.S. attack on the Syrian air base "was carried out in violation of international norms."

ATTACK INVESTIGATION

Syria's government has denied responsibility for the gas attack in a rebel-held area of northern Syria that killed at least 87 people, many of them children.

A fact-finding mission from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is investigating the attack.

If it determines that chemical weapons were used, then a joint U.N./OPCW investigation will look at the incident to determine who is to blame. This team has already found Syrian government forces were responsible for three chlorine gas attacks in 2014 and 2015 and that Islamic State militants used mustard gas.

China, which has vetoed six resolutions on Syria since the civil war began, abstained from Wednesday's U.N. vote, along with Ethiopia and Kazakhstan. Ten countries voted in favor of the text, while Bolivia joined Russia in voting no.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at an event in the White House, said he was not surprised by China's abstention.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft told the Security Council that samples taken from the site of the April 4 attack had been analyzed by British scientists and tested positive for the nerve gas sarin. He said Assad's government was responsible.

Diplomats said that Russia has put forward a rival draft resolution that expresses concern at last week's gas attack and condemns the U.S. strike on Syria. It was unclear if Moscow planned to put the text to a vote.

Trump says Russia relations may be at ‘all-time low,’ praises Tillerson trip

President Trump: I will work to enhance NATO

President Trump declared Wednesday that U.S.-Russia relations “may be at an all-time low,” as he praised his top diplomat Rex Tillerson for working to address those tensions in Moscow – and left open whether ties between the two countries can be mended.

“Right now, we’re not getting along with Russia at all, we may be at an all-time low,” Trump said, during a White House press conference with Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary-general.

Tillerson gave a similar assessment during a press conference with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, after meeting at the Kremlin with Vladimir Putin for nearly two hours Wednesday.

Tensions between the U.S. and Russia have flared since last week’s U.S. missile strikes against Syria’s Assad regime, Russia’s ally, in response to a chemical weapons attack. Trump stood by the decision on Wednesday, calling Bashar Assad a “butcher” and saying: “I have absolutely no doubt we did the right thing.”

Asked whether it's possible Syria could have launched the attack without Russia's knowledge, Trump gave a mixed answer, saying it's "possible" but "probably unlikely."

“I would like to think that they didn’t know, but certainly they could have, they were there,” he said.

The president said it would be “fantastic” if the U.S. and Russia eventually get along but could not say whether that would happen.

Trump, meanwhile, dialed back his pre-inauguration criticism that NATO is “obsolete,” citing more involvement in fighting terrorism. “I said it was obsolete. It’s no longer obsolete,” he said.

Stoltenberg agreed that “NATO can and must do more in the global fight against terrorism.”

Trump also touched on his efforts to address the threat from North Korea and said broadly, “Right now the world is a mess. ... By the time I’m finished, it’s going to be a lot better place to live in, because right now it’s nasty.”

Addressing ties with another global power, Trump said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had “very good chemistry” during their meeting last week and voiced hope that the country can help with North Korea. He said he told Xi that helping with Pyongyang could pave the way for a good trade deal, but the U.S. would “go it alone” if necessary.

“I think he wants to help. We’ll see whether or not he does,” Trump said. He praised China for, just minutes earlier, abstaining from a United Nations Security Council resolution that would have condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria. Russia vetoed the resolution calling for a speedy investigation into the attack.

While Tillerson was working to ease tensions Wednesday with Russia, those tensions could help assure European allies who feared the administration would go easy on Russia. During his 2016 campaign, Trump said he would decide whether to honor the commitment to protect the Baltic republics against Russian aggression, based on whether those countries "have fulfilled their obligations to us."

He has since made his support of NATO allies clear, but has reiterated his stance that European members need to meet their end of the bargain if they are to continue benefiting from the military alliance.

The Trump administration says it is spending a disproportionate share on defense compared with its 27 partners, and that it expects action by the time Trump meets with other alliance leaders on May 25.

NATO leaders pledged in 2014 to halt defense spending cuts and move toward a guideline target of 2 percent of gross domestic product within a decade. Only four other nations currently meet the target: Britain, Estonia, Greece and Poland. White House officials said in advance of Wednesday’s meeting that the administration still wants other nations to spend more on defense.

Stoltenberg backed Trump’s goal on Wednesday, saying, “We know that we all need to contribute our fair share,” and suggesting Trump’s focus on the issue has been helpful.

Trump reiterated Wednesday that NATO members must “meet their financial obligations” and “many have not been doing that.”

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance of European and North American democracies created after World War II to strengthen international cooperation as a counter the rise of the Soviet Union.

The United States, NATO's most powerful member, spends more on defense than all the others combined — 3.61 percent of GDP in 2016, according to NATO estimates. U.S. spending, too, has tapered off in recent years.

Trump on Tuesday also signed off on Montenegro's upcoming accession into NATO. Russia strongly opposes the move in a region it considers part of its strategic sphere of interest.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

KIM'S FATE SEALED

Elite US Navy Seal squad that killed Osama bin Laden ‘is training up in South Korea to take out Kim Jong-un’

Seal Team Six has been taking part in drills in South Korea as tensions with Kim's regime mount, according to reports

Updated: 12th April 2017,

THE crack US Navy Seal team that killed Osama bin Laden is reportedly training to take out North Korean tyrant Kim Jong-un.

Seal Team Six is taking part in secretive drills alongside other elite US forces in South Korea amid rising tensions with Pyongyang, news.com.au reports.

US military officials confirmed “ground, air, naval and special operations” are taking part in “several joint and combined field training operations” which involve up to 17,000 troops.

And South Korean newspaper JoongAng Daily has claimed the teams would take part in a drill to simulate the removal of Kim Jong-un.

But US officials denied the elite troopers are preparing a raid to take out Kim.

Asked about drills, Former US Navy Commander Gary Ross said: “There are variety of Special Operations Forces (SOF) participating in Foal Eagle, as they do in most regional exercises.”

“Foal Eagle is a regularly-scheduled, annual exercise that is the culmination of many months of planning and it is not being conducted in response to the current situation on peninsula.”

The special operations teams are thought to also include the Army Rangers, Delta Force and Green Berets.

The training started one day after US deployed its state-of-the-art THAAD missile defence system to the region.

It comes as tensions between Pyongyang and Washington reach boiling point.

A state-run North Korean newspaper yesterday warned the US it had nukes trained on the US mainland.

An article in Rodong Sinmun read: “Our revolutionary strong army is keenly watching every move by enemy elements with our nuclear sight focused on the U.S. invasionary bases.

“Not only in South Korea and the Pacific operation theatre but also in the U.S. mainland.”

The words of warning from Pyongyang came hours after Trump said Kim’s regime was “doing the wrong thing” by threatening to nuke the United States.

Trump authorised the sending of a fearsome naval battle group led by aircraft carrier USS Vinson to the Korean Peninsula.

The President added he “didn’t know” if the North Korean dictator is mentally fit as he boasted of having a “very powerful” military while talking up the power of the US “armada”.

Lawmakers Demand Trump Pump Brakes on Military Action in Yemen

The letter sent this week came in response to reports that the Trump administration is considering a proposal to directly engage the U.S. military in Saudi Arabia’s war against the Houthis in Yemen, including a planned United Arab Emirates-led attack on the Yemeni port of Hodeida, currently held by Houthi rebels.

“Such an attack could push the country into full-blown famine, where nearly half a million children in Yemen are facing starvation,” said U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), who led the letter campaign along with Reps. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), Walter Jones (R-N.C.), and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.).

As Common Dreams reported in March, the U.S.-supported war in Yemen has already led the country to what one journalist described as “the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world.”

Furthermore, “Direct U.S. hostilities against Yemen’s Houthis would run counter to your pledge to pursue a ‘disciplined, deliberate and consistent foreign policy’ that protects American families in ‘every decision’,” reads the letter to Trump. “Indeed, according to U.S. defense officials, the U.S.-backed Saudi war against Houthis in Yemen has already ‘strengthened al Qaeda there’ and poses ‘a serious threat to U.S. security’.”

The lawmakers, who garnered 50 additional signatures for their missive, note that “Congress has never authorized the actions under consideration.”

In turn, they write:

Engaging our military against Yemen’s Houthis when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers clearly delineated in the Constitution. For this reason, we write to request that the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) provide, without delay, any legal justification that it would cite if the administration intends to engage in direct hostilities against Yemen’s Houthis without seeking congressional authorization.

As U.S. Representatives, we take seriously the right and responsibility of Congress to authorize the use of force, or to refuse to do so, as mandated by the Constitution and the 1973 War Powers Resolution. We expect that any direct military actions pursued by the administration against the Yemeni Houthis be brought before Congress for consideration and authorization for approval before they are executed.

“President Trump does not have the authority to send U.S. forces to battle the Houthis in Yemen, period,” said Lieu. “Once again, the administration appears ready to ramp up U.S. involvement in a complicated civil war without a clear strategy in place or the necessary authorization from Congress. A unilateral decision for direct U.S. involvement in Yemen would be met by swift, bipartisan opposition.”

The letter, and a full list of signatories, is here (pdf).

Just Foreign Policy, which supported the signature campaign along with other anti-war organizations, is now urging constituents to demand their lawmakers invoke the War Powers Resolution when they return from recess on April 25, “to explicitly prohibit military escalation in Syria and Yemen.”

“I can’t promise you that we can stop this catastrophe,” wrote Robert Naiman of Just Foreign Policy last month. “But we used this exact same mechanism less than four years ago and were successful in stopping U.S. military action,” he continued, referring to the 2013 effort to stop then-President Barack Obama from bombing the Syrian government. “Given that the lives of hundreds of thousands of Yemeni children hang in the balance, isn’t it worth a try?”

THE MOST VIEWED FILE IN THE FBI VAULT SHOWS US WHAT THE WORLD IS REALLY INTERESTED IN RIGHT NOW

KALEE BROWN

The topic of UFOs and extraterrestrials has been gaining a lot of traction in recent years, especially thanks to the plethora of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Tons of government agencies have declassified an overwhelming number of documents exposing not only the existence of UFOs, but the frequency at which they’re spotted and the physics-defying maneuvers that they carryout.

Of course, UFOs don’t necessarily equate to extraterrestrial technology; however, a significant amount of people have come forward discussing the existence of extraterrestrial (ET) life, including civilian eye witnesses, military personnel, and government officials from around the world.

Mike Gravel, former Democratic Senator, explained,“Something is monitoring the planet, and they are monitoring it very cautiously, because we are a very warlike planet.”

This isn’t the first time someone has speculated that we are not alone in the cosmos and that ETs are watching over us and have even intervened in warfare. You can read more about UFO/ET military intervention here. There are hundreds of high ranking military whistleblowers who have testified to this.

“In one of the cases during the cold war, 1961, there were about 50 UFOs in formation flying South from Russia across Europe. The supreme allied commander was very concerned and was about ready to press the panic button when they turned around and went back over the North Pole. They decided to do an investigation and they investigated for three years and they decided that with absolute certainty that four different species, at least, have been visiting this planet for thousands of years. There’s been a lot more activity in the past two decades, especially since we invented the atomic bomb. They are very concerned about that and if we will use it again, because the whole cosmos is in unity and it affects not just us but other people in the cosmos. They’re very much afraid that we might start using atomic weapons again and this would be very bad for us, and them also.” –Paul Hellyer, Former Canadian Defence Minister (source)

“Yes there have been crashed craft, and bodies recovered. . . . We are not alone in the universe, they have been coming here for a long time. . . . I happen to be privileged enough to be in on the fact that we have been visited on this planet, and the UFO phenomenon is real.”

– Doctor Edgar Mitchell, 6th man to walk on the moon (source)(source)(source)

The Most Popular FBI Document Is This UFO Memo

Over a period of only two years, this FBI document has been viewed approximately a million times and is the most popular document on the FBI’s website. It’s only a page long, but it’s gained enough popularity that it has people wondering more about the UFO phenomenon.

The FBI document is a memo dated May 22, 1950 written by Guy Hottel, who was the head of the FBI field office in Washington, D.C. at the time. The memo was addressed to former Director J. Edgar Hoover and recorded and indexed in FBI records. You can read the full document on the FBI website here.

The memo discussed a testimony told to an FBI agent by a third party who stated an Air Force investigator had reported that three “flying saucers” were found in New Mexico. The memo stated:

“They [the saucers] were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only three feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed fliers and test pilots.”

The saucers were recovered because the government’s “high-powered radar” had allegedly interfered with “the controlling mechanism of the saucers.” The memo concludes by stating that “no further evaluation was attempted.” It seems strange that such an important finding wouldn’t be further investigated, which begs the question: Why didn’t this merit further research? Why weren’t the three bodies heavily tested? Perhaps they were, but like many other topics related to UFO and ET phenomena, we’re being kept in the dark.

This wasn’t the first UFO sighting in New Mexico either. One of the most infamous UFO crashes took place only a few years prior in 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico.

Related CE Article: This Is What Happens When A UFO Is Tracked On Military Radar

The Mysterious Roswell UFO Sighting

For years, conspiracy theorists and journalists alike deemed the Roswell incident as one of the most obvious pieces of evidence covered up by the U.S. government regarding extraterrestrial life to date.

Although the official FBI memo released regarding this event only describes the appearance of the “flying disc,” which you can read about in the FBI Vault here, there’s far more to the story.

On July 8, 1947, local newspaper Roswell Daily Record published an article titled “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region.” However, later that day the story mysteriously changed after a press conference stated that it wasn’t a UFO that was found, but rather a crashed weather balloon.

Many people questioned this, including Colonel Phillip Corso, Sr., who was an Army intelligence officer that served on Eisenhower’s National Security Council. Following his 21-year military career, he served as a military analyst. He made a public figure of himself by acknowledging that he personally witnessed deceased extraterrestrials from the Roswell crash.

In the following video, he discusses his initial encounter as well as having seen UFOs travel at 4,000 miles an hour on radar. He discusses how, during his employment in R&D, he was given fragments of extraterrestrial technologies from various crashes.

Corso describes the deceased aliens as having a brain completely different than that of humans. They had no nose or mouth, no digestive system, and no reproductive organs. “They are more humanoid beings than anything else,” he says in the video. “Their spaceship is composed of durable metals and are biological in nature; nothing like we’ve ever seen.”

You can watch the full video below:

Why We Need UFO Disclosure

Although it’s still unclear as to what happened during both of these events in New Mexico, one thing’s for certain: There’s an overwhelming amount of evidence in support of UFOs. Despite the government’s immense efforts to keep us in the dark, we are slowly but surely discovering more about UFOs and ETs.

As Senator Barry Goldwater, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said:

“This thing has gotten so highly-classified… it is just impossible to get anything on it. I have no idea who controls the flow of need-to-know because, frankly, I was told in such an emphatic way that it was none of my business that I’ve never tried to make it to be my business since. I have been interested in this subject for a long time and I do know that whatever the Air Force has on the subject is going to remain highly classified.” (source)

Even John Podesta has spoken out about UFO disclosure. Podesta wrote the statement below as part of the foreword for Leslie Kean’s 2010 New York Times bestseller, UFOs: Generals, Pilots, And Government Officials Go On The Record:

I’m skeptical about many things, including the notion that government always knows best, and that the people can’t be trusted with the truth. The time to pull the curtain back on this subject is long overdue. We have statements from the most credible sources – those in a position to know – about a fascinating phenomenon, the nature of which is yet to be determined.” (source)

Nevertheless, thousands of documents have been released from government organizations, giving us a more in depth idea of UFOs and ET life. One document that’s particularly notable is another FBI file that specifically discusses ET life.

You can read the full letter here, but I’d like to highlight these general points made on Page 22:

  • Part of the disks carry crews, others are under remote control.
  • Their mission is peaceful, the visitors contemplate settling on this planet.
  • These visitors are human-like but much larger in size.
  • They are not excarnate Earth people, but come from their own world
  • The disks posses some type of radiant energy.
  • They do not come from any “planet” as we use the word, but from an etheric planet which interpenetrates with our own and is not perceptible to us.
  • The bodies of the visitors, and the craft also, automatically materialize on entering the vibratory rate of our dense matter.
  • They re-enter the etheric at will, and so simply disappear from our vision, without trace.
  • The region they come from is NOT the astral plane, but corresponds to the Lakas or Talas. Students of esoteric matters will understand these terms.

You can read more about this specific FBI document in this CE article here.

You should no longer ask yourself, “Should I believe in UFOs?” The overwhelming amount of evidence is proof enough that there’s something much greater at play here.

The real question here is: “What else is the government hiding about extraterrestrial life?”
