With new grant, Obama reaches clemency milestone

President Obama announced he would free 79 more drug offenders from federal prison Tuesday, pushing the total number of commutations under his tenure to over 1,000.

With this new grant, Obama has handed out more commutations than the past 11 presidents combined, part of his 2014 decision to use his previously dormant clemency power in a new and aggressive way. That year, the Justice Department asked prisoners who had been sentenced for nonviolent drug crimes to apply for clemency, funneling them through a group of pro-bono lawyers to help them with their petitions. The president saw his commutation power as a way to correct for overly harsh drug sentences that sent people away to prison for decades and sometimes life for nonviolent crimes.

“He is committed to using his clemency power in ways not seen from any other president in the modern era,” White House Counsel Neil Eggleston told reporters. He said the commutations send a message that the U.S. is a “nation of second chances.”

Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said that her office is committed to processing the remaining 6,300 drug petitions and getting them to the president’s desk before he leaves office. It’s unclear how many more of them Obama will grant, though Eggleston said there will almost certainly be more before Jan. 20. Most drug prisoners who have received grants so far had served at least 10 years in prison for a drug crime.

The administration officials said they don’t know whether a Trump White House will pursue Obama’s aggressive use of clemency. Sen. Jeff Sessions, Trump’s pick for attorney general, has called Obama’s commutations “reckless” and an abuse of executive power. He pointed out that some of the freed prisoners were also serving time on firearms charges.

“This president has been personally committed to this,” said Eggleston. “This White House has cared a lot about it, this Department of Justice has cared a lot about it. But I can’t really talk to whether the next administration would have a similar sense of enthusiasm.”

Whole new valley opens up and continues growing swallowing land in Hurunui District after New Zealand earthquake

The New Zealand’s earthquake was followed by thousands of landslides and triggered cracks and fractures in fields and across roads.

In the Hurunui District, a new giant ravine also formed. The land on either side of the crack fell some 20 meters, and its bottom is littered with trees.

Was there a cave system beneath the Earth crack? According to Radio Live, the land suddenly opened up and swallowed the ground. Apparently it keeps moving with every quake.

These photos from Sherwood Road are not what they first appear to be...
Taken today by our Amuri Water Officer Jimmie Petrie, they show what looks like vegetation at the bottom of a gully...EXCEPT that that gully never existed before!!! That 20 metre drop used to be level with the land on either side of it!!

The reason of this giant collapse is still unknown but
what an amazing geological event!

This unlikely place may be where WWIII starts

This unlikely place may be where WWIII starts

Donald Trump faces the dilemma of whether defending a Baltic NATO member against Vladimir Putin is worth sparking World War III, an influential defense expert has claimed.

A third world war is set to be ignited in Latvia if the United States comes to the rescue of the Baltic country, according to Professor Paul D. Miller.

The respected expert from the National Defense University in Washington, DC, predicted the invasion of Crimea in 2014.

And now the professor believes Latvia or possibly neighboring Estonia is next on Russia’s hit list.

But since the Baltic nations are in NATO, all members are compelled to come to its rescue under Article Five of an alliance treaty — which would spark World War III.

The warning comes as Russian strongman Vladimir Putin claimed today he was mending broken ties with Trump-led America following his annexation of Crimea and continuing support for Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

During his campaign, Trump expressed reservations about pitching in to help NATO allies.

But Miller believes Putin would not invade the tiny country of 2 million people with conventional troops.

Instead, the hard-line Russian leader would incite civil unrest among ethnic Russians who make up 25 percent of the population.

“He will not send large formations of uniformed Russian soldiers over the international border — even the most cautious NATO members will not ignore an overt conventional invasion,” Millerwrites for Foreignpolicy.com.

“Instead, Putin will instigate an ambiguous militarized crisis using deniable proxies, probably in the next two years.”

“Perhaps Russian-speaking Latvians or Estonians will begin rioting, protesting for their rights, claiming to be persecuted, asking for ‘international protection.'”

“A suspiciously well-armed and well-trained ‘Popular Front for the Liberation of the Russian Baltics’ will appear.”

“A few high-profile assassinations and bombings bring the Baltics to the edge of civil war.”

“A low-grade insurgency may emerge.”

After using its veto at the UN to block an international peacekeeping force, Miller predicts Putin will intervene under the pretext of settling the conflict.

Observers agree that Putin’s Russia favors “hybrid warfare” over conventional attacks.

This blend of unconventional and conventional war can involve agents or militias not officially attached to a country’s forces.

Sometimes it aims to create a climate that justifies military intervention.

This underhand technique is said to have been used to seize Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Agents are said to have whipped up tension among Crimeans of Russian heritage and under a pretext of helping them, Russia annexed the Black Sea nation.

Elsewhere, Moscow is accused of sponsoring militias for their ends.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic has accused Putin of conspiring to murder him in a sinister bid to curtail NATO power.

Prosecutors in the Balkan state have revealed explosive claims that nationalists from Russia hatched a plan to have a sniper shoot dead the leader as part of a coup attempt.

The conspirators are said to want to stop the tiny country — which used to be part of Yugoslavia — from ever joining NATO.

They have been accused of plotting to do this by toppling the pro-Western government and replacing it with a Moscow-friendly one.

Putin said Russia would take countermeasures in response to any more NATO expansion, RIA news agencyquoted him as saying Tuesday.

“Why are we reacting to NATO expansion so emotionally? We are concerned by NATO’s decision-making.”

Another spot predicted to be at the center of a new world war is the Suwalki Gap, which connects Moscow’s ally Belarus to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

Russia’s huge Baltic Fleet is based in Kaliningrad, as are multiple Russian air bases and a new Iskander-M missile system — with nuclear warheads capable of hitting targets 310 miles away.

Fukushima reactor cooling system stops following quake & tsunami

The cooling system of the third reactor at the Fukushima nuclear power plant has stopped circulating water following a powerful 7.3 offshore earthquake. TEPCO said it managed to restart the system some 90 minutes after the failure.

LIVE UPDATES: 7.3 Fukushima quake & tsunami

The cooling system servicing the Unit 3 spent fuel pool was not able to circulate water to cool the nuclear fuel because of a broken pump, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Agency.

The temperature in the pool went up to 28.7 degrees Celsius. It takes up to seven days for temperatures to rise to 65 degrees Celsius, which is the upper operational limit, Japan’s national nuclear agency said.

At such a pace, the cooling system failure posed no “immediate danger,” although the agency admitted “gradual” rise in temperatures.

The exact cause of the cooling system stoppage is currently unknown. However, the system might have been “shaken” during the earthquake, according to nuclear agency officials, as reported by NHK. The station’s storage pool currently contains 2,544 spent fuel rods. No cooling water leaks or any other “abnormalities” have been reported.

The first tsunami wave which hit the nuclear power plants was about one meter high, while the second was “not very high,” according to TEPCO. There has been no “major physical damage” to the nuclear power plants, NHK reported.

The initial 7.4 magnitude quake struck at 5:59am JST at a depth of 25km, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency. At least seven aftershocks followed the initial jolt. The powerful earthquake prompted officials to issue a tsunami warning and announce the evacuation of the areas close to the shore.

Several tsunami waves have already struck the land, and even more powerful waves are expected to occur very soon. There are no reports on damages so far, while at least six people suffered minor injuries during the quake and tsunami, NHK reported.

SOTT Earth Changes Summary - October 2016: Extreme Weather, Planetary Upheaval, Meteor Fireballs

© Sott.net
October 2016: another '1-in-1,000-year flood event' hits the Carolinas
While all eyes last month were on the most extraordinary build-up to a US election, Earth Changes continued apace.

The curtain-raiser in October 2016 was Hurricane Matthew, which left a swathe of destruction across Colombia, the Caribbean and the US East Coast. The strongest North Atlantic storm in a decade, Matthew was also the strongest storm ever recorded so close to the equator, dumped so much water that it broke rainfall records wherever it went, and cost over $10 billion in damages. Haiti, where over 1,600 people were killed, bore the brunt of it.

Extreme weather is so 'normal' now that South Carolina last month recorded its seventh '1-in-1,000-year' flood event in just 6 years, beating rainfall records set in... September 2016. While much of the US saw record-breaking warm temperatures for October, copious amounts of snow across Russia meant that the northern hemisphere's snow cover extent by late October was second only to that recorded in 1976.

We also have a dozen mind-blowing meteor events in this month's video, a reflection of what we suspect is another end-of-year uptick in 'space visitors'. As we reported at the beginning of the year, fireballs have significantly increased over the last decade, and the skies become especially 'illuminated' during the latter half of each year.

These were 'the signs' in October 2016...

Comment: Update 23 November 2016 - It has come to our attention that the 'meteor over south Wales' @15:14 is being claimed as the creation of some liberal artist, which may or may not be the case.
