NORTH KOREA CONDEMNS U.S. SANCTIONS AS ‘OPEN DECLARATION OF WAR’

Pyongyang was not pleased with sanctions on leader Kim Jong-un and other officials.

BY ON 7/8/16 AT 8:16 AM

North Korea has called the U.S. decision to place its leader Kim Jong-un and other senior officials under sanctions as a “declaration of war.”

The U.S. placed Jong-un and ten other key figures in the rogue state’s government under sanctions for the first time this week over alleged human rights abuses. The sanctions freeze any assets in the U.S. owned by the individuals and ban companies from doing business with them.

The communist state has not reacted positively to the decision, with the government-run news agency KCNA calling the move a “hideous crime” and equated it to the U.S. openly declaring war, South Korean news agency Yonhapreported.

The U.S. State Department said the decision to impose sanctions on the regime was punitive action for its imposition of “intolerable cruelty and hardship on millions of its own people.”

A U.S State Department spokesman said that, while the sanctions were unlikely to deter Kim’s repressive policy, “that doesn’t mean this still isn’t the right thing to do.”

Drones Spotted Over US Nuclear Site 8 Times In Less Than A Month

JULY 8, 2016

By Everett Numbers

Workers at a U.S. Department of Energy nuclear site in South Carolina have reported that unmanned aerial vehicles flew over the facility eight times in recent weeks. Officials say no drone has been recovered.

From June 19 to July 5, an 18-day period, a drone flew over the Savannah River Site (SRS) on at least eight occasions, according to employees at the federal facility, as well as Department of Energy officials, the Aiken Standard and local ABC-affiliate WJBF reported.

Each time one of the remotely operated aircraft is spotted, a call goes out over the facility’s PA system, and SRS employees receive an email with information regarding the sighting, SRS officials told the Standard.

“Over the last two weeks,” the most recent internal email read, “there have been several reports of small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) flying over various areas on SRS to include the K Area Complex, H Area, E Area and the [mixed oxide fuel] MOX Facility. Although airspace over the SRS is not currently restricted, these flights do pose a safety and security concern.”

SRS personnel have been asked to watch for drones and report them, along with photographic or video evidence of the sightings. The facility, managed and operated by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC, is cooperating with local, state, and federal authorities.

The Federal Aviation Administration has a well-established Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that “strongly advises” pilots to steer clear of nuclear facilities, and new FAA rules for drone pilots will be enforced this August.

Despite helicopters taking off from the facility to attempt to catch or identify one of the drones, none have been recovered. There are no leads. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state’s equivalent, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, are investigating the matter.

Tom Clements, director of Savannah River Site Watch, an organization critical of the facility, told South Carolina newspaper, The State, that FBI agents visited his home to ask him questions.

Clements not only told the paper he had no information about the drone sightings, but that the FBI agents “were not well informed about my organization or the situation.’’

The SRS facility is located in South Carolina near the state’s border, southwest of the city of Aiken, South Carolina and southeast of Augusta, Georgia. It sits on land in three South Carolina counties.

‘Israeli killers' homes must be destroyed the way Palestinians' are’ - lawyer

Published time: 8 Jul, 2016 12:29

The lawyer for the family of the Palestinian teenager whose 2014 murder sparked a new spike in settlement violence has called on Israel to treat his killers the same way it does Palestinian militants – which is to destroy their homes.

The lawyer, Mohannad Jubara, believes it is a fitting and equal punishment for the three Israeli men who abducted 16-year-old Mohammed Abu Khdeir in 2014, and burned him to death. The attackers’ motives were allegedly revenge for the killing of three Israeli teens by Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Israel is known for destroying the homes of Palestinian militants as a tactic aimed at deterring future attacks. Palestinians believe the practice amounts to collective punishment.

Jubara launched his appeal to the Supreme Court, saying Abu Khdeir’s killers should face the same fate.

Recently Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the destruction of the home of a Palestinian teen who snuck into an Israeli girl’s bedroom to kill her.

The Jewish state also continues its practice of the systematic removal of Palestinian settlements it deems illegal, as in the case of the village of Al-Araqeeb, which was destroyed for the 100th time since July 2010, according to locals and activists. Israel says the village was built on state land and lacked the necessary permits.

However, one activist said demolitions went ahead despite the decision by the Israeli Higher Court of Justice, which ruled the land did not belong to the state.
