On Friday, Defense Secretary Ash Carter called out Russia for bombing a Syrian rebel group that's backed by the U.S.

Since last year, American and Russian warplanes have shared the skies over Syriawhile supporting different sides in the civil war. Moscow backs the Assad dictatorship; the U.S. is arming rebels who've been trying to overthrow it.

The attack by Russian fighter bombers on American-backed opposition forcesappeared to be deliberate and to ignore repeated U.S. warnings.

It happened in southern Syria where two Su-34s bombed opposition forces, some of them trained and equipped by the Pentagon as part of the war against ISIS.

When the American-run command center which tracks Russian flights realized what had happened, it called the Russian command center in Syria -- on a hotline set up specifically to avoid incidents like this -- demanding the planes cease fire.

Two American F-18 jet fighters were dispatched to provide air cover for the troops on the ground as they tried to evacuate their casualties. By the time the F-18s arrived, the Russian planes were headed away, but were still close enough to see.

But when the F-18s broke away to refuel, the Russians returned for a second bombing run. Another call went out to the Russian command center in Syria, demanding that the planes wave off.

The crew of an airborne command post tried to contact the Russian pilots directly but got no response. The Su-34s conducted another bombing run, leaving a small number of opposition fighters dead on the ground.

It's been nearly nine months since Russia intervened in Syria's civil war, and although Russian planes have flown close to American aircraft before, this was the most serious incident between the two militaries.

Aides to Defense Secretary Carter described him as irate at the Russian action, although publicly he confined himself to calling them unprofessional.

	Hackers find security gaps in Pentagon websites PUBLISHED18/06/2016 \| 00:56 Ash Carter said the hackers tackled five public Pentagon internet pages (AP) Hackers brought in by the Pentagon to breach Defence Department websites have found 138 different security gaps, defence secretary Ash Carter said. The so-called white-hat hackers were turned loose on five public Pentagon internet pages and were offered various bounties if they could find unique vulnerabilities. The Pentagon said 1,410 hackers participated in the challenge and the first gap was identified 13 minutes after the hunt began. Overall, they found 1,189 vulnerabilities, but a review by the Pentagon determined that only 138 were valid and unique. The experiment cost 150,000 dollars (£100,000). Of that, about half was paid to the hackers as bounties, including one who received the maximum prize of 15,000 dollars (£10,000) for submitting a number of security gaps. "These are ones we weren't aware of, and now we have the opportunity to fix them. And again, it's a lot better than either hiring somebody to do that for you, or finding out the hard way," said Mr Carter. The Pentagon said this was the first time the federal government had undertaken a programme with outsiders attempting to breach the networks. Large companies have done similar things. Called Hack the Pentagon, the programme will be followed by a series of initiatives, including a process that will allow anyone who finds a security gap in Defence Department systems to report it without fear of prosecution.
