The Shaking Continues: The Most Dangerous Volcano In Mexico Has Erupted In Spectacular Fashion

By Michael Snyder, on April 19th, 2016

Popocatepetl
More than 25 million people live in the vicinity of Mt. Popocatepetl, including Mexico City’s 18 million residents. At 2:32 local time on Tuesday morning, the most dangerous volcano in Mexico roared to life in spectacular fashion, and this has many experts extremely concerned about what is coming next. Popocatepetl is an Aztec word that means “smoking mountain”, and historians tell us that once upon a time entire Aztec cities were buried in super-heated mud from this volcano. In fact, the super-heated mud flows were so deep that they buried entire Aztec pyramids. A full-blown eruption of Mt. Popocatepetl would be a catastrophe unlike anything that modern Mexico has ever experienced before, and considering what has been happening in Ecuador, Japan and at Yellowstone over the past week, I believe that there is great reason for concern.

The eruption of Mt. Popocatepetl very early this morning took residents of the area very much by surprise. The following is how one Mexican news course reported the news

The volcano Popocatépetl came to life at 2:32 this morning, sending out a column of ash that fell on much of the city of Puebla and closed the airport.

The National Disaster Prevention Center, Cenapred, said the volcano spewed ash to an altitude of about three kilometers above the crater.

The explosion was accompanied by the emission of incandescent fragments which were reported to be landing up to 1.6 kilometers away, northeast of the volcano, which is commonly known as El Popo.

But words cannot really describe just how spectacular this eruption was. If you are interested, you can view video footage of the moment when Popocatepetl erupted right here

Meanwhile, seismologists all over the globe are speculating about which area of our planet may be hit next.

For example, scientists in India believe that the tremendous amount of tectonic strain that has built up out there could ultimately produce a magnitude 8 or magnitude 9 earthquake, and they are convinced that this quake “can come at any time”

A subduction process similar to the one that caused the Ecuadorean quake is happening under the Himalayan region as well, where the Indian plate is getting inside the Chinese landmass.

This northward push has been creating a huge amount of tectonic strain in the region, making it particularly prone to earthquakes.

Scientists believe there is so much energy stored in the area that an earthquake of magnitude greater than 8, possibly even 9, would be needed to release it. This earthquake can come at any time.

Here in the United States, some experts are deeply concerned that the west coast is particularly vulnerable. One of those experts is former USGS scientist Jim Berkland. The following is what Wikipedia has to say about him…

Jim Berkland studied geology at the University of California, Berkeley earning the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958. Thereafter he worked for the United States Geological Survey while pursuing graduate study. In 1964, he took a position at the United States Bureau of Reclamation.[3] After further graduate study, he taught for a year at Appalachian State University, 1972–1973, then returned to California to work as County Geologist for Santa Clara County from 1973 until he retired in 1994.[4]

During a recent interview with Bobby Powell, Berkland explained that most “megaquakes” take place either during a new moon or a full moon, and he pointed to the San Andreas Fault and the Cascadia Subduction Zone as areas that he is particularly concerned about at the moment…

Is “The Big One” imminent? Famed USGS scientist Jim Berkland, the man who predicted the Loma Prieta “World Series Earthquake,” has a terrifying warning for the West Coast of the US in the wake of massive earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan that have left hundreds dead, awakened volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” and kicked off earthquake swarms in Hawaii, Arizona, and Yellowstone National Park.

Beware the new and full moons,” Berkland says in this exclusive interview. The “maverick geologist” says that 20 of the last 25 “megaquakes” have occurred on the dates of new and full moons, the result of “equinoctal tides,” extreme gravitational forces that cause solid earth to expand and contract much as ocean tides rise and fall.

Berkland says that he is particularly worried about the San Andreas Fault in the LA Basin and the Cascadia Subduction Zone along the coast of Oregon and Washington State, where a long overdue earthquake would undoubtedly be accompanied by a massive tsunami that could kill thousands and cause billions of dollars in property damage.

Even though I recently wrote a major article about the vulnerability of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, I want to make it clear that I am not forecasting that any particular disaster will hit any particular area at any particular time.

But what we can say with certainty is that the crust of our planet is becoming increasingly unstable. Our world is being pummeled by dozens of earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater, and as you read this article a total of 38 volcanoes are erupting worldwide.

And it is quite interesting to note that in 1906 there were major earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan that preceded the historic San Francisco earthquake.

On January 31st, 1906 an enormous magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit Ecuador, and that was followed by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Japan on March 17th.

Of course most Americans have already heard about the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit San Francisco on April 18th of that year, but most people don’t understand that it came in the context of these other major quakes.

Could we be witnessing a similar pattern today?

In Matthew 24, Jesus warned us that earthquakes in diverse places would be one of the signs that His return was drawing near. He also explained that the time immediately preceding His return would be the worst time in all of human history.

Could it be possible that we are now entering that period of time?

Please feel free to tell us what you think by posting a comment below…

Japan in Depth / Seismic activity stretched 100 kilometers
By Shotaro Demizu and Takako Sasamoto / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writers

Self-Defense Forces personnel and other rescue workers search for missing people in a residential area of Minami-Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, on Sunday.
The Yomiuri Shimbun

8:36 pm, April 17, 2016

MASHIKI, Kumamoto — The magnitude-7.3 earthquake that pounded Kumamoto Prefecture early Saturday was more powerful than a foreshock that struck two days earlier.

The seismic activity then moved northeast to reach areas in Oita Prefecture about 100 kilometers away from the focus of the magnitude-7.3 quake. Experts are concerned that quake activities could spread to a major active fault that lies further ahead in that direction.

On Saturday morning, Yomiuri Shimbun reporters entered the town of Mashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture, where aftershocks continue to rattle the area. Many houses in the town’s Dozono district have collapsed. A large crack ran through a field, leaving a line of what looked like overturned earth. A road crossing the field was buckled out of alignment.

According to a calculation by Masashi Omata of the Japanese Society for Active Fault Studies, the ground here moved about 20 centimeters vertically, and about two meters horizontally. This measurement was taken in a northeastern section of the Futagawa fault zone, which extends for at least about 64 kilometers. “Part of the Futagawa fault zone shifted and caused the magnitude-7.3 temblor,” Omata said.

Another fault zone, the Hinagu fault zone, lies south of the quake’s focus. The Hinagu zone is at least about 81 kilometers long, and a magnitude-6.5 quake that struck on Thursday evening was centered in its northeastern section. Nagoya University Prof. Yasuhiro Suzuki, an expert on active faults, said, “The faults are connected, so the earthquakes on Thursday and Saturday occurred as a series of movements.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially thought Thursday’s temblor was the main quake. However, it turned out to be a smaller foreshock that was a precursor to the main magnitude-7.3 quake. “When a magnitude-6 level quake happens, it’s difficult to predict whether an even bigger earthquake will occur,” said Gen Aoki, head of the agency’s earthquake and tsunami monitoring section.

Activity moving northeast

The quake activity that began on Thursday became even more heightened following Saturday’s main quake. Furthermore, the location of this activity, which started in areas around Kumamoto city, moved northeast and expanded to include the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture and central Oita Prefecture.

These three areas where large quakes have recently occurred are in or near what is called the Beppu-Shimabara rift zone. The ground structure in the Kyushu region is subject to forces that pull it north-south. Many active fault lines, including the Futagawa and Hinagu fault zones and the Beppu-Haneyama fault zone in central Oita Prefecture, have developed where the ground has been warped in parts of the rift zone.

According to the agency, whenever a fault slips, it can place additional stress on the ground further along the line. “Earthquakes in the three areas are likely affecting each other,” an agency official said.

Yasuhiro Umeda, a professor emeritus at Kyoto University and a seismology expert, was surprised by the distance between the epicenters of the quakes. “I didn’t anticipate that an earthquake might be set off so far away,” Umeda said.

Barry Grossman says Saudi Arabia’s threat to pull $750 billion from the US economy suggests that Saudi Arabia is privy to the content of the 28-page classified document which allegedly proves the involvement of certain Saudi officials in the September 11, 2001, attacks.
An international lawyer and political analyst says the United States has sacrificed every basic principle of justice once held “sacrosanct” in the Western legal tradition “for political expediency.”

Barry Grossman, who is based on the Indonesian island of Bali, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Sunday while commenting on a recent US court ruling against Iran over 9/11, and a bill, which if passed by the US Congress, would take away immunity from foreign governments in cases “arising from a terrorist attack that kills an American on American soil.”

On March 9, Iran was ordered by a US judge to pay more than $10.5 billion in damages to families of people killed on 9/11 and to a group of insurers.

US district judge George Daniels issued the default judgment in New York, claiming Iran failed to defend itself against allegations of having a role in the attacks.

The court ruling is based on the 9/11 Commission Report which stated that some attackers moved through Iran and did not have their passports stamped.

Saudi Arabia was legally cleared from paying damages to families of 9/11 victims last year, after Judge Daniels dismissed accounts that Riyadh provided material support to the terrorists and ruled that Riyadh had sovereign immunity.

The verdict comes even though there is no evidence of Iran being involved in planning 9/11. None of the 19 hijackers were Iranian, while 15 were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, and one each from Egypt and Lebanon.

KSA privy to content of 9/11 report?

Saudi Arabia has threatened to sell off some $750 billion of American assets held by the kingdom if Congress passes a bill that would allow the Saudi ruling family to be held responsible in US courts for any role in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to
The New York Times.

Grossman said Saudi Arabia’s threat to pull hundreds of billions of dollars from the US economy suggests that Saudi Arabia is privy to the content of the 28-page classified document which allegedly proves the involvement of certain Saudi officials in the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The 28-page report is part of a larger Congressional report on 9/11 released in 2002 and called the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities, which was conducted by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Reports say the Obama administration and intelligence officials are now weighing whether to declassify the remaining 28 pages.

Grossman told Press TV that the fact that Saudi Arabia is “making such threats suggests that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is somehow privy to the content of the mysterious 28 pages in issue which are, of course, still very much classified or, at the very least, it suggests that the KSA has good reason to be concerned about what is contained in them. That in itself is very revealing.”

“Unfortunately, the significance of all of this will go over most people’s heads. Nobody is alleging that there is any evidence that King Fahd or his government somehow officially sanctioned or arranged the 9/11 attacks. Nobody should be under any illusions about that,” he added.

Contrived little psyop

“Instead, this contrived little psyop stems from Saudi concerns over an increasingly aggressive spate of civil cases being brought in the US federal court system by the surviving relatives of individuals allegedly victimized by terrorism both in the United States and abroad, against nations which are considered hostile to the US-led international system,” Grossman said.

“That such private civil lawsuits are even possible against foreign sovereign states highlights just how absurdly exceptional the United States considers itself to be. Not only does the United States not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over its own international actions but it is, as far as I know, the only nation in the world which has passed legislation that strips away the international norm of sovereign state immunity, thereby enabling private citizens to sue foreign states,” he said.

“Of course it does not take a great deal of specialist insight to understand that the exceptions created by America’s Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act not only are unprecedented in international law but also politically motivated. They certainly were never intended to be used by private citizens against allies of the United States, let alone against a special ally like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” he stated.

Israel behind lawsuits against Iran

“The current hubbub has arisen because an increasingly aggressive group within the US legal profession and security apparatus has been very successful at working with Israel to win politically motivated lawsuits against countries like Iran, relying entirely on a self-serving body of US jurisprudential law cultivated within the US legal system which, it is in no way controversial to say, is of course overwhelmingly pro-Israel, with all that entails,” Grossman said.

“This lunacy has recently culminated in a long string of massive judgments against Iran and a handful of other sovereign nations connected with claims which any school boy would intuitively understand are absurd. This witch hunt has become so absurd that one relatively junior federal court judge alone has recently held Iran liable for 9/11 and given another huge judgment against Iran payable to the surviving relatives of occupiers in Palestine who were allegedly killed by terrorist acts carried out by Palestinians,” he noted.

“The basis for these lawsuits in every case lies in the fact that the State Department, in what can only be understood as political interference in the judicial process, long ago designated Iran to be a state sponsor of terrorism without any clear supporting evidence. Under the FSIA legislation, that gives standing to individual victims of so-called terrorism to bring private actions against Iran in circumstances where, but for the FSIA Terrorism exception, Iran would otherwise be entitled to claim sovereign immunity,” he pointed out.

Political expediency

“In litigating these cases, every basic principle of justice once held sacrosanct in the Western legal tradition has been sacrificed for political expediency. The long established legal notions of causation have been watered down to the point of being meaningless while the rules of evidence are made a mockery of by judges permitting well resourced and plaintiffs – backed up by the US and Israeli security apparatus – to call on a large team of like-minded and clearly politically motivated, so-called experts to cite each other’s work as evidence proving some generalized allegation which, even if proved by genuine evidence, would by conventional legal thinking be considered far too remote to the so-called terrorist incident to create any related liability,” Grossman said.

“This lunacy reach a new nadir recently when a New York Federal Court judge held Iran liable for more than $10 billion in damages to only a handful of plaintiffs who lost loved ones in the 9/11 attacks, all on the strength of self-serving expert claims that prior to 9/11 and well before there was any formal organization recognized as al-Qaeda, there was allegedly an arrangement officially sanctioned by senior elements in the Iranian government which enabled some of the 9/11 hijackers to travel through Iran to Afghanistan and back again without having their passports stamped,” the lawyer stated.

“Without wanting to over simplify the court’s ultimate ruling, the trial judge accepted these allegations as proven entirely on the strength of expert testimony and confessions extracted from detainees under torture. He ruled that by letting some of the men who were ultimately alleged to be the 9/11 hijackers travel through Iran in such an informal manner, Iran is entirely liable to all American victims of 9/11 who bring a FSIA suit against Iran,” he said.

“Apparently it never occurred to this relatively junior Federal Court judge that if indeed the travel of a few bin Laden associates was facilitated as alleged, Iran might have had some genuine national security interest in doing so, much the same way the USA has apparently at times had an national security interest in moving bin Laden and other alleged terrorists around the globe and even in and out of the US, without the US thereby necessarily being party to or otherwise responsible for every subsequent act later attributed to them,” he stated.

“In the same proceedings, the judge struck out similar claims against Saudi Arabia on the basis that since Saudi Arabia has never been designated a state sponsor of terror, the FSIA terrorism exception did not apply; so any claim would have to be brought under the non-commercial tort exception to sovereign immunity. That exception requires evidence that the Saudi government committed a recognized, non-commercial tort or civil wrong in US territory,” the lawyer noted.

“Since the allegations against the KSA, though somewhat less remote to the events of 9/11 than the allegations made against Iran, also relate to claims that elements within the Saudi government gave financial and other general support to Osama bin Laden’s Mujahedeen before the alleged hijackers among them are said to have executed the 9/11 attacks, the court struck out the proceedings against the KSA on the basis that there was no indication that the plaintiff’s had even prima facie evidence of a civil wrong committed by the KSA on US territory,” he argued.

Public opinion shifting against Saudi Arabia

“With US and, indeed, worldwide public opinion rapidly shifting against Saudi Arabia, clearly the Saudi regime is now concerned that should the notorious 28 classified pages in the Senate Intelligence Committee Report on 9/11 be declassified, the information contained in them might either provide evidence of some non-commercial civil wrong loosely connected with bin Laden or 9/11 and committed by the Saudi government on US territory, or may even lead to the KSA being designated a state sponsor of terror in which case the terrorism exception cynically used to deem Iran liable for 9/11 could be similarly used against the KSA,” Grossman said.

“That such private actions are even possible is quite absurd and a by-product of the unique exceptionalism which the United States asserts for itself and its citizens, in open contravention of international law and custom,” he added.

“While there will be many people in America braying for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to be held accountable for 9/11 the way Iran has been, short of hard evidence that the KSA government planned, sanctioned or knowingly supported the 9/11 attacks, any private claims against a sovereign state are simply absurd and untenable, let alone claims litigated in a nation like the United States which sees its legal profession and security apparatus dominated by friends of Israel and which often puts a value of many millions of dollars on a single not so exceptional American life ,” the analyst emphasized.

“That said, the current situation is completely unacceptable. Even with the 28 pages still classified, the basic facts already
publicly available suggest that the KSA was far more connected with the events of 9/11 than Iran. If the Obama administration is now going to take part in this contrived psyop to suppress any evidence that might otherwise expose the KSA to civil liability in US courts, then it clearly follows that Iran must also be shielded from the absurd liability being imposed on it by FSIA and a completely tainted US Federal Court system,” he pointed out.

“In any case, it is apparently lost on almost everyone that there is no reason that security apparatus experts with top secret clearances who have read the 28 pages should not be able to give sealed testimony against the KSA in the same way experts gave sealed testimony against Iran based on a privately funded, civilian investigation and classified documents. Of course the very notion of such star chamber tactics in mere civil proceedings is Orwellian and neither the KSA, nor Iran, and indeed no other nation should have to undergo the ignominy of having its internationally recognized sovereign immunity stripped away by self serving testimony from so-called experts, testifying in secret proceedings,” he continued.

“That the Obama administration is now giving cover to the KSA under the ruse of this hollow and untenable threat of a Saudi selloff of US assets and that it would somehow pose a serious risk to the US economy, only illustrates how politically motivated the FSIA statutory regime is.”

Saudis overstating extent of investment in US

“Moreover, Secretary of State Kerry’s expressed fears that exposing the KSA to the same standard of liability the USA has been only too happy to impose on Iran might somehow cause other nations to retaliate with their own FSIA styled legislation is truly bizarre in that his comment exposes just how unprecedented and improper the FSIA scheme is by international standards. Of course, all of this begs the question: Why have other nations not responded in kind with their own FSIA legislation? Obviously they know only too well how any move to do so would see the US and its Atlantic World allies threaten and black mail them into abandoning any such ideas,” Grossman said.

“In any case, the Saudis appear to be very much overstating the extent of their investment in the US in this ruse being orchestrated by the Obama administration and its special ally. The best available reports available suggest that all oil exporting nations together have only some $281 billion invested in US securities, including the Saudi Arabian holdings. It is in fact a relatively small player in US investments, For example, by way of comparison, Japan has $1.3 trillion invested in the US securities and China $1.25 trillion.
It is patently absurd that the US could in any way feel threatened or at economic risk should such a selloff be implemented,” he pointed out.

“Indeed, one would expect that while it might, in the short term, put some downward pressure on US based equity markets, the operations of those companies which the Saudis are invested in would not be affected and the demand for dollars created by such a selloff, if anything, would put some small amount of upward pressure on the dollar rather than somehow collapsing it, while at the same time making available some good buys to domestic investors. If they want to divest, let them divest. The threat of divestment is certainly no reason to keep the 28 pages everyone is waiting to read classified,” he noted.

“That said, the real point in all of this is that the US political apparatus must scrap its unfair FSIA scheme which is both contrary to international convention and obscenely unfair to nations opposed to the US-dominated international system. If the Obama administration is going to provide cover for Saudi Arabia, then it must offer a similar accommodation to help Iran avoid the unprecedented judgments being imposed on it by a politically motivated US Federal Court system and FSIA,” the lawyer concluded.

Rich Americans seek black market brain implants in bid to plug into artificial intelligence 'matrix'

U.S. Presidential candidate exclusively reveals details of pair of men planning to communicate with computers using the power of thought

A pair of super-rich American technology gurus are planning to undergo surgery to install experimental implants directly into their brains.

The two men are currently trying to find a doctor willing to perform this untested and highly risky procedure, The Mirror has learned.

If they survive the operation, the men hope to be able to directly communicate with the primitive forms of artificial intelligence currently being developed in labs across the world.

But critics and conspiracy theorists fear these pioneering implants are the first step towards creating a society where every human is plugged into "the matrix".

Zoltan Istvan, a U.S. Presidential candidate, personally knows both of these would-be bionic men.

He is the global leader of the Transhumanist movement, which believes human beings should use technology to artificially boost their intelligence or physical prowess.

In an interview with The Mirror, Istvan said: "I have friends who are buying tickets to Central America to perform this kind of surgery.

Have your say in the comments section below

"I know two people who are doing this, but it's secretive because even getting a doctor to do this in Central America is difficult."

One of the pair is planning to visit a doctor in Honduras, whilst the other will journey to Eastern Europe, Istvan said.

He did not name the men, because it is feared that American authorities may try to stop them from travelling abroad to undergo surgery.

"They work in AI and it would be the very first time someone got an implant specifically to use brain waves to connect with rudimentary artificial intelligences," Ivstan added.

"The technology will allow them to carry out basic conversations. That's how far this telepathy idea has come."

They have been planning the operation for three years, but have not been able to find a doctor to do the brain surgery.

"The real trick is finding a doctor to perform this and keeping themselves safe," Istvan added.

Academics and conspiracy theorists have issued many warnings about the potential implications of brain implants and transhumanism in general.

Francis Fukuyama, the thinker renowned for heralding 'The End of History' a few years before it began again when 9/11 sparked the war of terror, famously named transhumanism as one of "the world's most dangerous ideas".

In an interview with the Big Issue published last week, the notorious David Icke (pictured above) took a break from claiming shape-shifting lizards ruled the world to make an astonishing warning about brain implants.

"What this has all been heading towards is ‘implantables’, where the devices are inserted under your skin and start to affect human consciousness from a central grid," he suggested.

"The people in charge have always been massively outnumbered and their greatest fear is the human race waking up, but once they’re able to alter our thought processes from a central computer it’s game over.

"That’s the biggest threat we’re facing over the next few years.”

Can a burgeoning satanic movement actually effect political change?

A photograph from The Sabbat Cycle’s Austin stop, where a screening of ‘The Witch’ was held, followed by a satanic ritual.
The Satantic Temple

Robert Eggers' period horror film “The Witch” has been one of the surprise hits of 2016. It’s even gained a second wind since its February 23 release: the first weekend of April it played on 666 screens around the country, raking in an additional USD$465,000.

The tale of a Puritan family turning on each other as they attempt to root out the supernatural evil plaguing their farm, the film won Eggers the award for best director at Sundance – and even frightened horror master Stephen King.

But neither of these accolades has generated as much buzz as an endorsement from The Satanic Temple (TST), a satanic political movement that first appeared in 2013.

In December, TST and A24 studios began collaborating on a four-city tour called The Sabbat Cycle, which consisted of screenings of the film followed by politically driven satanic rituals. The stated goal of The Sabbat Cycle was to inspire a “satanic revolution.”

TST believes that the separation of church and state is currently under attack by radical religious conservatives. They also believe there is a silent majority that opposes this agenda, but remains too apathetic to do anything about it.

The Sabbat Cycle was an attempt to raise political awareness by piggybacking on “The Witch”’s appeal. This is part of larger PR model the group has used since its inception, in which the shocking and the frightening are used to lure media attention to their cause.

As a religion scholar, I find TST fascinating. Not only do their campaigns raise serious questions about the First Amendment and religious pluralism, they also challenge the public to think about what counts as a “religion.”

To learn more, I attended the Sabbat Cycle at its Austin stop, and spoke with attendees about their religious and political views.

Political movement, religion or both?

Since its founding, TST has waged a highly active campaign to demand greater separation between church and state, and to challenge the privileged relationship Christianity has with government.

A cornerstone of their campaign has been tongue-in-cheek “stunts” intended to show how government institutions favor Christianity in ways that would never be tolerated for other religions.

TST first made headlines in 2013, when it held a rally in Florida, ostensibly to congratulate Governor Rick Scott for passing a bill that would allow students to read “inspirational messages of their choosing” at assemblies and sporting events.

While Scott probably envisioned the law permitting Christian students to offer public prayers and Bible readings, it could not, constitutionally, specify what sort of “inspirational messsages” were allowed – including satanic messages. And so the rally featured a sign declaring, “Hail Satan! Hail Rick Scott!”

Whether or not TST is a “real” religion has been a subject of debate. But some members insist that while the movement is atheistic, the group, like other religions, has a shared set of values, concerns and symbols (like Satan as a symbol of rebellion).

Baphomet, a goat-headed idol, is a satanic symbol. The Satanic Temple/Facebook

Religion or not, no one can question TST’s appeal or its sincerity about its political goals.

Today TST has 17 chapters in the United States and Europe and claims an estimated 100,000 members – a figure based on the purchase of membership cards and various forms of online support.

Masters of media attention

TST chapters across the country have launched campaigns demanding the same religious rights and privileges afforded to Christianity.

These have included the creation of satanic coloring books for distribution in schools in Florida and Colorado; bids to erect satanic “nativity scenes” on government property in Florida, Michigan and Indiana; offering prayers to Satan at a high school football game in Seattle; and demanding that a monument to the Ten Commandments at the Oklahoma State Capitol be accompanied by a monument to Baphomet (a goat-headed idol associated with witches' sabbaths).

The 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) reinforced the religious freedoms outlined in the First Amendment. When the Supreme Court ruled that RFRA applied only to the federal government and could not be applied to the states, many states passed their own versions of RFRA. Several of TST’s campaigns involve using RFRA laws to claim religious accommodations for satanists.

For example, since 2014 TST has invoked state RFRA laws in Michigan and Missouri to demand a religious exemption from laws dictating that those who seek an abortion need to review literature or endure a waiting period.

The Satanic Temple performs a satanic ritual at the Michigan State Capitol in December 2015. The Satanic Temple/Facebook

In January, TST’s Tucson chapter demanded that the Phoenix City Council include them in public prayers offered before their council meetings. The council responded with a new rule that only chaplains from the police and fire departments may offer the prayers before meetings. (TST has threatened to sue.)

Harvard Law Professor Noah Feldman has argued that James Madison would have supported the Tucson satanists. Madison was concerned that individual rights could be threatened by a “tyranny of the majority,” and saw laws guaranteeing individual rights as “paper barriers” that offered no real protection. Only a diverse coalition of minorities could effectively check a majority and protect individual freedom.

“We do not seek followers, but collaborators”

It was exactly this sort of coalition that TST spokeswoman Jex Blackmore hoped to forge through events like the Sabbat Cycle.

In Austin, Texas, Blackmore took the stage before a screening of “The Witch” at the Alamo Drafthouse and explained that the film was a “microcosm of a patriarchal theocratic society that results in satanic revolution.” In Blackmore’s reading of the film, the titular witch was driven to witchcraft by Puritan oppression.

A promotional poster for ‘The Witch.’ A24

Afterward I got to chat with Drafthouse employee and film buff Laird Jimenezabout this assessment. He noted that “escaping patriarchy” is currently part of a cultural zeitgeist that includes films like Oscar-winner “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which depicts women escaping – and then overthrowing – a patriarchal warlord.

Following the screening, everyone migrated to a bar and music venue called The Sidewinder, where TST held their ritual. Members from the Detroit and San Antonio chapters began setting up and handing out satanic American flags painted in only black and white. I mingled with a small crowd of Satanic sympathizers and the curious. Leather jackets, tattoos and pentagrams were in abundance.

During the ritual, a speaker played an excerpt from a speech by Baptist pastor Dr. Jeff Owens, in which Owens warned his congregation, “Satan does not want you to do what he wants you to do. Satan wants you to do what you want to do.” (Other eyewitness accounts of the ritual can be found here and here.) Owens had been warning that Satan uses people’s pride and selfish desires against them, but the ritual imposed its own interpretation onto his message: To TST, Satan represents moral autonomy and personal responsibility.

Blackmore eventually appeared from beneath a hood and took to a podium to deliver what can only be described as a “satanic jeremiad.” She warned that Christian theocrats were taking over America and that those present – atheists, satanists, fans of heavy metal and punk music – were allowing it to happen: “There’s too much apathy and not enough resistance!”

She told the audience, “We do not seek followers, but collaborators.”

Afterward I spoke with some young people from the crowd. One explained that he was attracted to Satanism because “It’s about knowledge,” not dogma.

Another, Jonathan – who identified as a witch – seemed the most likely to be sympathetic to TST’s politics. He said that when he attended high school in Virginia Beach, his classmates targeted him for openly identifying as a Pagan. Someone even pretended to be him and called in bomb threats to his school. The events attracted the attention of Detective Don Rimer, a notorious “occult crime expert,” who confiscated all of Jonathan’s books on witchcraft as evidence. There was an attempt to forcibly commit Jonathan to a mental institution.

I asked Jonathan if he thought TST was really a religion.

“Definitely,” he said, “Some people treat Christianity as a hobby. But no one thinks it’s not a real religion.”

Can the satanists win?

As the event wound down, I was able to interview Blackmore. Like Marx, Blackmore saw her revolution as inevitable: the Christian Right would naturally drive people to rebel against it.

She told me that she’d recently met a French journalist who said that nothing like TST could happen in France. The French model of laicité – a much more ingrained version of America’s professed separation of church and state – leaves nothing to rebel against. By contrast, TST wants to challenge the popular belief that America is a “Christian nation.”

Many TST members and allies I spoke to described strict Christian upbringings. In Blackmore’s assessment, progressive cities like Austin are paradoxically the most apathetic about resisting the Christian Right because people in progressive cities feel they are unaffected by religion-influenced laws. Blackmore saw “The Witch” as an opportunity to get more people involved and hasten their political revolution.

But Jonathan pointed out that this dialectic can swing both ways: revolution begets counterrevolution. For example, in the 1970s, the New Christian Right formed, in part, as a response to the perceived excesses of the 1960s.

Likewise, there is a risk that an openly satanic presence in American politics will energize the very forces TST opposes. Right wing news sites such as Breitbart.com and LifeSiteNews have given TST heavy coverage precisely because their rhetoric can be used as fodder for antiabortion activists.

Conservative voices have claimed TST “proves” what they have said all along – that God is with them and their political opponents are literally demonic.

In many ways, TST is the heir to the “New Left” of the 1960s and such figures as Abbie Hoffman and Allen Ginsberg. Events like the “exorcism” of the Pentagon in 1967 demonstrated an understanding of ritual and semiotics: the strategic use of religious symbols could change what the Pentagon represented to the public.

But the New Left also intentionally straddled the line between prank and sincerity in order to draw media attention to their cause. It is contested today what effect the New Left actually had toward the goal of ending the Vietnam War and it is similarly unclear what effect TST might have on America’s political center of gravity.

Nonetheless, millennials now outnumber baby boomers. They’re a more diverse generation than their predecessors, and major changes to the political landscape seem inevitable.

Still, supporters like Jonathan remain skeptical of TST’s true viability.

“It’s not that they’re wrong,” he said, “But this is Austin, and look how many people came out? And how many people here are actually going to do anything?”
