Meet the black activist who derailed a big polluting project before graduating college

Destiny Watford was a 17-year-old student at a south Baltimore high school when she asked a roomful of students if they suffered from asthma. To her dismay, every single hand went up.

That was three years ago, when Watford was in the middle of a fight to stop Energy Answers International from building a solid-waste incinerator in the Baltimore neighborhood of Curtis Bay. Her mother, along with many friends and family members, had asthma, and her neighbor died from lung cancer. The culprits seemed obvious to Watford: the medical-waste incinerator, coal pier, and slew of chemical plants surrounding Curtis Bay that foul the air. A proposed solid-waste incinerator, the biggest of its kind in the United States, was poised to move in a short walk from her high school.

Watford, along with other young people from Curtis Bay, decided to fight, largely by pressuring public officials. Last month, they scored a victory when state regulators pulled the incinerator project’s permit. For her efforts, the Goldman Environmental Foundation named the 20-year-old Watford one of six winners of this year’s Goldman Environmental Prize on Monday.

The award is fitting for Watford, who works with Free Your Voice, a human rights committee of United Workers. In 2015, the Goldman was presented to six people, including Berta Cáceres, an activist for indigenous rights who was killed in Honduras last month. It’s a prize for people who bring attention to the consequences that environmental inequities bear on their communities.

Watson, for instance, drew a connection between Baltimore’s environment and riots following the death of Freddie Gray, an unarmed, 25-year-old black man who died in police custody after getting arrested for no good reason. Residents rioted while officials fumbled to bring charges against the officers responsible for Gray’s death; Maryland’s governor declared a state of emergency, imposed a curfew and deployed the National Guard on Baltimore. Watford wondered why reporters weren’t asking what she called deeper questions about the environment in which the riots were taking place.

When I interviewed Watford, I asked her how she felt about winning. Her response was about winning the fight against the incinerator, not about winning the Goldman and its $175,000 award. A 20-year-old who’s more excited about stopping a waste incinerator than about winning a pile of money? Meet Destiny Watford, a young person who puts her community first. Here’s an edited portion of our recent conversation:

Q. Early on, you linked the death of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore riots, and the environment. Why?

A. Before we even learned about the incinerator, we were learning about our basic human rights. When we found out the incinerator was proposed to be built in our community, it violated every single value, belief, and basic human right that we had. When it come to the death of Freddie Gray, when it comes to incinerators, when it comes to the crisis in Flint, Michigan, those issues are different, but they’re not separate. They’re all issues of injustice — of systematic injustice, which we’ve been fighting against.

Q. What about environmental justice in particular? What do you think grassroots activists should understand about winning campaigns against big polluters?

A. When polluting developments are proposed, they’re usually in poor neighborhoods. They’re proposed in places where it’s perceived that our voices aren’t very strong, that there won’t be a public outcry, or that there isn’t a lot of power and so there won’t be a lot of pushback or resistance. And a lot of times, those are communities of color. It always comes down to who or what has power. When we’re resisting against an established system that creates developments like the incinerator, it’s really important to have power in communities if you are to win.

Q. You won a big victory against the proposed incinerator, but your community continues to be plagued by toxic pollution. What’s next for you?

A. As it stands now, all the air quality monitors have been removed from our community, so we don’t even know how much worse it’s gotten for us. As far as pollution goes, and how to even begin to figure out how to deal with it, I’m not completely sure, but there needs to be some sort of accountability. For instance, we’ve been working to bring in air quality monitoring to issue health impact assessments about the existing pollution in Curtis Bay. We need to measure and know what kind of specific pollution there is, how it’s affecting people, and how to deal with it.

Q. Yours is hard work. What gets you up in the morning to do it?

A. Just knowing an incinerator was going to be built in the community where I grew up, where my family grew up attracted me to working against it. Watching my nephews and other small family members grow up here, and watching neighbors and schoolmates — I mean, Curtis Bay is my home. I want to protect my home and the people that I care about. And the more I worked on the campaign, the more I came to realize that places like Curtis Bay have been taken advantage of and used for so long, and it’s really important to me that does not become our fate. That’s what gets me going.

Cincinnati warns 16,000 residents their water is likely contaminated with lead... while the EPA remains totally silent
Tuesday, April 19, 2016 by: Amy Goodrich

Last week, the Cincinnati City Council's Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee voted to send letters to roughly 16,000 homeowners who could be in danger of lead poisoning. When lead enters the human bloodstream, it can cause health and developmental problems, which especially affect infants and young children.

The motion is an action taken by Councilman Christopher Smitherman. He was alarmed after Michigan's story of countless people, including many children, being poisoned by
lead-laced drinking water, and deaths caused by a bacterial infection known as Legionnaire's disease.

"I think this is a good first step to notify property owners of the risk no matter how small the risk," Smitherman said, as reported by Cincinnati.com. He further notes that the government and Water Works should act to protect the citizens and assist families who might not be able to afford replacement of their lead pipes, which costs roughly $5,000 per property.

No reason for panic?

In the aftermath of what recently happened in Flint, and many years ago in Washington DC, many communities across America are now taking matters into their own hands by taking a look at their own drinking water systems.

While Smitherman has started the motion to inform the citizens, he also stresses that the
Cincinnati water supply is safe. Unlike Flint's water supply, Greater Cincinnati Water Works closely monitors the water through a lead corrosion control program to protect its customers.

According to officials, a
lead violation has never occurred, but they don't deny that the pipes may cause a threat to human health. Director of the Greater Cincinnati Water Works, Cathy Bailey, said there is what she calls an "ever present risk."

"We know that we still have lead service lines in our system, that's something that is known," Bailey said. "We have a main replacement program that we've had in place 1971; and so as we go out and replace those
water mains, we look at those lead service lines and we replace as much as we can there."

If you live in the Cincinnati area and are concerned about your water pipes, Water Works has created an online searching tool
here to check if they have a lead service pipe leading to your property, and will test your water on request, at no charge.

EPA remains silent

While Cincinnati's drinking water may seem safe, since 2013, 21 other drinking-water systems in Ohio have shown lead levels higher than the limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Sadly, the EPA, which has set these norms and is there to protect us, keeps silent and refuses to comment in any way.

According to
Mike Adams, aka the Health Ranger and founder of Natural News, "the EPA is the single most corrupt, criminally-run regulator in the federal government who has poisoned the entire nation through legalizing the spread of industrial pollution, heavy metals, toxic chemical and cancer-causing substances which can be collected and spread on farms."

The
EPA has all the information about the lead-leaching pipes and their harmful effects, but chooses to sit on the information instead of warning the people, and keeps getting away with it. But that's all about to change, as we enter the "Age of Transparency", as Mike calls it in the Health Revolt radio show.

He is now teaming up with the non-profit, Consumer Wellness Center, and a former NASA contract scientist to conduct a nationwide scientific analysis of heavy metals – such as lead – in American tap water, and to expose the criminal practices being allowed to pollute the environment and put numerous lives at risk.

New Poll Shows Only 6% Of People Trust The Mainstream Media

APRIL 19, 2016

By Joseph Jankowski

At this point, most Americans are aware of the staggering dishonesty and reality twisting that the mainstream, corporate news media engages in on a daily basis.

And it is showing.

Numbers released by Pew Research show that major news channels like CNN, Fox News and MSNBC are in a decline of prime time viewers.

Even reporters within the major networks have admitted that the media has been corrupted by political and corporate interests.

This is what former CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson had to say:

There is unprecedented, I believe, influence on the media, not just the news, but the images you see everywhere. By well-orchestrated and financed campaign of special interests, political interests and corporations. I think all of that comes into play.

But if there was any indication that the mainstream press has no credibility and is on its way to extinction, this latest poll is it.

From the Associated Press:

Trust in the news media is being eroded by perceptions of inaccuracy and bias, fueled in part by Americans’ skepticism about what they read on social media.

Just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the media, putting the news industry about equal to Congress and well below the public’s view of other institutions. In this presidential campaign year, Democrats were more likely to trust the news media than Republicans or independents.

***

Nearly 90 percent of Americans say it’s extremely or very important that the media get their facts correct, according to the study. About 4 in 10 say they can remember a specific incident that eroded their confidence in the media, most often one that dealt with accuracy or a perception that it was one-sided.

The news media have been hit by a series of blunders on high-profile stories ranging from the Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling on President Barack Obama’s health care law to the Boston Marathon bombing that have helped feed negative perceptions of the media.

In 2014, Rolling Stone had to retract a vivid report about an alleged gang rape at a fraternity party at the University of Virginia. The Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, asked by Rolling Stone to investigate after questions were raised about the veracity of the story, called it an avoidable journalistic failure and “another shock to journalism’s credibility amid head-swiveling change in the media industry.”

There is only one thing that can save the mainstream media, and that is the truth.

But the truth is not why networks like MSNBC exist. They exist to deceive and play lapdog for the establishment.

More than ever the American people want the truth and accuracy when it comes to their news. This is why we are seeing a huge rise in alternative media.

By just taking a look at the popular commercial web traffic data and analytics site, Alexa.com, we see that alternative news sites are ranking very high inside the United States and globally.

The very popular and accurate ActivistPost.com is ranked in the top 16,000 websites inside the United States and in the top 35,000 globally!

Just to put that in perspective, there are over 1 billion websites in all globally.

Considered to be the tip of the spear of the alternative news, Alex Jones’s Infowars.com is rankingin the top 1,200 websites in the U.S. and the top 3,200 globally!

Alexa.com gathers data on a web page’s daily unique visitors and daily pageviews.

Another great example of alternative news rising to mainstream popularity is James Corbett’s CorbettReport.com. This stunning website is ranking in the top 150,000 globally and in the top 60,000 in the U.S.

There is only one way to conclude this article:

Dozens Of Large Earthquakes Strike As Speculation Mounts That Japan’s Southern Island May Split

APRIL 18, 2016

By Michael Snyder

Over the past 48 hours, our planet has been hit by literally dozens of earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater, and scientists are acknowledging that what is taking place is highly unusual. This strange shaking began toward the end of last week when the globe was struck by five major earthquakes over the space of just two days, and over the weekend the seismic activity just continued to escalate. Very early on Saturday, Japan’s southern island of Kyushu was hit by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, and on Saturday night a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Ecuador’s Pacific coast. It was the worst earthquake that Ecuador had experienced since 1979, and it was followed by at least 163 aftershocks. Unfortunately, there are indications that what we have seen so far may be just the beginning.

Because the Ecuador earthquake was bigger, it is getting most of the headlines at the moment, but the truth is that what is going on in Japan is potentially far more dangerous.

Over the past week, Japan’s southern Island of Kyushu has been rocked by a series of devastating quakes, including two major ones in less than 48 hours. The following comes from the Guardian

A second major earthquake in less than two days has shaken Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, with at least 34 people thought to have been killed, about 1,500 injured and more feared buried after building collapses and landslides.

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck at about 1.30am on Saturday, waking people across the island – including the thousands already in crisis centres. It caused widespread damage, with several landslides and a village evacuated over fears a dam might burst.

The mainstream media in the United States is using the term “landslides” to describe what has happened all over Kyushu, but the truth is that in many instances it would be far more accurate to say that “giant cracks” or “vast chasms” have formed. The geography of Japan’s southern island has been fundamentally transformed, and this is beginning to cause huge concerns. Here is more from the Guardian

One major landslide tore open a mountainside in Minamiaso village in Kumamoto prefecture, destroying a key bridge that could cut off food and other relief transport to the worst-hit area.

Another landslide hit a road, collapsing a house that fell down a ravine. In another part of the village, houses were left hanging precariously at the edge of a huge hole.

I want to show you a map which comes directly from the U.S. Geological Survey. This map shows all of the earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater that have hit Japan’s southern island over the past week. As you look at this map, do you see a pattern?…

Kyushu-Earthquakes-460x432The dozens of earthquakes that have hit Japan’s southern island over the past week appear to form something of a straight line that divides the island in two. Many are now speculating that geological forces are beginning to tear Kyushu in half, and if that is true, the earthquake activity that we have seen in Japan so far is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

We could potentially be talking about an event that could ultimately have far more of an impact on Japan than the tsunami of 2011. By the time it is all said and done, entire cities could be wiped off the map and millions upon millions of Japanese citizens could be displaced.

Already, the seismic activity that has rocked Kyushu is having quite an impact on the Japanese economy

Earlier today Toyota was one of many Japanese companies to announce that it will suspend most car production across Japan as a result of critical supply chain disruptions caused by the recentdestructive earthquake and numerous aftershocks. All of the major assembly lines will be shut down across its four directly-run plants, and Toyota will be halting production in stages at other group companies as well.

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, most of the Toyota group in Japan will be effectively shut down through at least the end of this upcoming week, with a production loss of as many as 50,000 vehicles, including brands such as Prius, Lexus, and Land Cruiser.

Our planet resembles something of a giant cracked egg, and the enormous tectonic plates that we are all living on are constantly in motion. So if Japan’s southern island is in the process of slowly splitting in half, that shouldn’t exactly be a surprise. After all, scientists assure us that Los Angeles and San Francisco will be directly next to one another someday.

And it isn’t just Japan that we need to be concerned about. All along the “Ring of Fire,” seismic activity is increasing, and this has many of the experts completely puzzled. The following comes from an excellent piece by Alvin Conway

This has continued to baffle many of the world’s leading geologists, who still attest the rise in the number of large earthquakes is merely a random natural occurrence. For instance, the number of large earthquakes doubled in 2014. However, here’s what scientists had to say about it: “If you think there have been more earthquakes than usual this year, you’re right. A new study finds there were more than twice as many big earthquakes in the first quarter of 2014 as compared with the average since 1979.

We have recently experienced a period that has had one of the highest rates of great earthquakes ever recorded,” said lead study author Tom Parsons, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Menlo Park, California.

If you are familiar with my work, then you already know that I believe that we have entered a period of time during which we will see seismic activity on a scale that none of us have ever experienced before.

This great shaking will combine with other factors such as financial collapse, geopolitical instability and civil unrest to produce what many have described as a “perfect storm.” Life as we know it is in the process of fundamentally changing, and right now we are only in the very early chapters of this change.

Unfortunately, most people are ignoring the warnings and will continue to ignore them until it is far too late.

Headed to Meet Displaced People, Samantha Power’s Convoy Strikes and Kills Cameroonian Child
BY SIOBHÁN O'GRADY | APRIL 18, 2016 - 4:24 PM

America’s envoy to the United Nations was on her way Monday to talk to people forced from their homes by Boko Haram in Cameroon when a vehicle in her convoy struck and killed a 7-year old child. Ambassador Samantha Power, who has spent much of her life championing the victims of conflicts, later spoke with the child’s family “to offer her condolences in person,” a State Department official told Foreign Policy.

“We deeply saddened and offer our sincere condolences to the child’s family,” said the State official, who refused to be identified by name in confirming the accident. “At the time of the incident, Ambassador Power was outside Maroua, in the northern part of Cameroon visiting IDP and refugee camps and discussing with Cameroonian officials how to address the threat of Boko Haram in the region. The area had been the near recent instances of Boko Haram violence.”

The motorcade was reportedly traveling at around 60 mph at the time of the crash, which occurred on a two-lane highway near the city of Mokolo in Cameroon’s Far North region. It was the sixth car in Power’s convoy, driven by a Cameroonian, that hit the child. He was tended to by the ambulance in the motorcade and transported to a local hospital, but could not be saved. It was not immediately clear whether the child’s family will be compensated for their loss.

Mokolo is the fourth-largest city in the region, which borders Nigeria’s northeast. Although Boko Haram extremists originated in northern Nigeria, they have over the past few years spread into neighboring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. Mokolo is less than a 90-minute drive from Maroua, the university town in the region that has been repeatedly struck by suicide bombers — including children forced to detonate themselves at crowded marketplaces and mosques.

Between an influx in refugees from Nigeria and internally displaced people in Cameroon fleeing to the makeshift, underfunded camps, Boko Haram has caused a massive headache for Cameroon’s central government in Yaoundé, more than a day’s travel from the violence up north. Outside of Maroua, the Far North region is Cameroon’s most isolated and underdeveloped region, where most rural residents live in small, thatched roof compounds and subsist on what farming and cattle-herding they can manage in excruciatingly hot temperatures.

According to a statement from Power’s office last week, she is visiting Cameroon ahead of stops in Chad and Nigeria to visit with government officials, civil society organizations, Cameroonian troops, and displaced people. She is also scheduled to publicly destroy “confiscated ivory and pangolin scales, demonstrating the strong U.S.-Cameroonian partnership to counter wildlife trafficking.”
