The Economic Collapse Of South America Is Well Underway

By Michael Snyder, on March 3rd, 2016

Earth - Our World - Public Domain
The 7th largest economy on the entire planet is completely imploding. I have written previously about the economic depression that is plaguing Brazil, but since my last article it has gotten much, much worse. During 2015, Brazil’s economy shrank by 3.8 percent, but for the most recent quarter the decline was 5.89 percent on a year over year basis. Unemployment is rising rapidly, the inflation rate is up over 10 percent, and Brazilian currency has lost 24 percent of its value compared to the U.S. dollar over the past 12 months.

At this point, Brazil is already experiencing its longest economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and things are getting worse for ordinary Brazilians every single day. The following comes from CNN

But with Brazil plunging into its worst recession in over two decades — hopes for a brighter future are fading. The Brazilian economy shrank 3.8% in 2015, according to government data published Thursday. That’s the biggest annual drop since 1990 and the country is in its longest recession since the 1930s.

I have never seen anything like this,” said Alves, 24, as he stood on his balcony overlooking Rocinha, a massive lower middle class neighborhood or favela in Rio de Janeiro where he grew up. “My parents would tell me about hard times, but today it is really tough. Prices are going up every day.”

So how did this happen?

Well, there are a couple of factors that are really hurting South American economies.

Number one, during the “boom years” governments and businesses in South America absolutely gorged on debt. Unfortunately, many of those loans were denominated in U.S. dollars, and now that the U.S. dollar has appreciated greatly against local South American currencies it is taking far more of those local currencies to service and pay back those debts.

Number two, collapsing prices for oil and other commodities have been absolutely brutal for South American economies. They rely very heavily on exporting commodities to the rest of the world, and so at the same time their debt problems are exploding they are getting a lot less money for the oil and industrial commodities that they are trying to sell to North America, Asia and Europe.

I want you to pay close attention to the following chart and analysis from Zero Hedge. As you can see, the economic problems in Brazil appear to be greatly accelerating…

“The Brazilian economic downturn took a real turn for the worse in February,” according to Markit’s Composite PMI, which collapsed to record lows at 39.0. Despite a slightly less bad than expected GDP print this morning (still down a record 5.89% YoY), hope was quickly extinguished as PMIs showed economic activity continuing to contract at a record pace, job losses accelerating, and manufacturing’s collapse accelerating. As Market sums up, “With the global economy also showing signs of slowing, which will impact on external demand, it looks as if the downturn is set to continue to run its course in the coming months.”

GDP was a disaster (but better than expected)

Brazil GDP - Zero Hedge

And of course Brazil is not the only South American economy that is a basket case right now. In fact, things in Venezuela are far worse. In 2015, the Venezuelan economy shrunk by 10 percent, and the official rate of inflation was a staggering 181 percent.

Could you imagine living in an economy with a 181 percent inflation rate?

As prices have escalated out of control, citizens have attempted to hoard basic supplies in advance, and this has resulted in food shortages that are absolutely frightening

Cardboard signs on the door warning of “No bread” have become increasingly common at Venezuelan bakeries.

Venezuela gets 96 percent of its foreign currency from oil exports, and as crude prices have plunged, so have the country’s imports — among them wheat.

The leftist government of President Nicolas Maduro has tightly controlled access to hard currency, and this has affected imports ranging from medicine to toilet paper. Now it is seriously affecting imports of wheat, which Venezuela does not grow.

Add to this the soaring inflation rate — 181 percent in 2015, the world’s highest — and you see why customers are mainly interested in buying basic food items such as bread.

Here in the United States, there are still people who doubt that an economic crisis is happening.

But in Venezuela and Brazil there is no debate.

Unfortunately, what is happening in Venezuela and Brazil is also slowly starting to happen to most of the rest of the planet as well. It is just that they are a little farther down the road. Economic and financial bubbles are bursting all over the world, and I like how author Vikram Mansharamani described this phenomenon during a recent interview with CNBC

Deflationary tides are lapping the shores of countries across the world and financial bubbles are set to burst everywhere, Vikram Mansharamani, a lecturer at Yale University, told CNBC on Thursday.

I think it all started with the China investment bubble that has burst and that brought with it commodities and that pushed deflation around the world and those ripples are landing on the shore of countries literally everywhere,” the high-profile author and academic said at the Global Financial Markets Forum in Abu Dhabi.

And of course the evidence of what Mansharamani was talking about is all around us.

Just this week we found out that Chinese state industries plan to lay off five to six million workers, U.S. factory orders have now fallen for 15 months in a row, and the corporate default rate in the United States has now risen above where it was at when Lehman Brothers collapsed.

There are some people that would like to point to the fact that stocks have bounced back a bit over the past couple of weeks as evidence that the crisis is over.

If they want to believe that, they should go ahead and believe that.

Unfortunately, the truth is that the hard economic numbers that are coming in from all over the world tell us very clearly that global economic activity is slowing down significantly.

A new global recession has already begun, and the pain that is already being felt all over the planet is just the beginning of what is coming.

Trump Again Asserts Planned Parenthood ‘Has Done Very Good Work’ for ‘Millions of Women’

By on

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump again repeated his belief on Tuesday that while he would defund the abortion giant Planned Parenthood because it murders unborn children, the organization “has done very good work” for “millions of women.”

Trump held a news conference in Palm Beach on Super Tuesday night instead of a campaign rally, and was asked by a reporter about his softer tone on the organization.

“Does it feel to you yet like you are the presumptive Republican nominee—and along those lines, you had some complimentary things to say about Planned Parenthood. You said you could be flexible on immigration. Are you trying to adjust your tone to a more general election message?” she asked.

“Look, Planned Parenthood has done very good work for some—for many, many—for millions of women,” Trump replied, noting that some may not think that it is right to make such a remark.

“And I’ll say it, and I know a lot of the so-called conservatives, they say that’s really—because I’m a conservative, but I’m a common sense conservative,” he stated. “But millions of women have been helped by Planned Parenthood.”

Trump said that he would not fund Planned Parenthood as long as it performs abortions, but stated that he has received “thousands” of letters from women who have been helped by the organization.

“[W]e’re not going to allow and we’re not going to fund as long as you have the abortion going on at Planned Parenthood, and we understand that and I’ve said it loud and clear,” he stated. “[But] I’ve had thousands of letters from women that have been helped. And this wasn’t a set-up; this was people writing letters.”

Trump made similar comments last Thursday during the Republican presidential debate.

“Millions of millions of women—cervical cancer, breast cancer—are helped by Planned Parenthood,” he asserted after being confronted by Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio about his recent positive remarks about the organization. “I would defund it because I’m pro-life, but millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood.”

“So you can say whatever you want, but they have millions of women going through Planned Parenthood that are helped greatly,” Trump said.

As previously reported, in its annual report released at the end of December, Planned Parenthood outlined that the organization performed 323,999 abortions nationwide during the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

As it has been in previous years, Planned Parenthood’s largest focus was sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), as it tested and/or treated over four million people for sexual ailments, with over 3.5 million tests and 32 thousand men and women being treated for ailments contracted through sexual activity.

Over 2.9 million people were provided with contraceptives or other forms of birth control in 2014—from temporary to permanent, including over 900 thousand emergency contraception kits. The figure is down from 3.5 million the year before, and 3.7 million in 2012.

Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms as it is not licensed to operate mammogram machines, and its annual report outlined that less than 700,000 women received services surrounding cancer screenings, equating to just seven percent of its services, while STD testing and contraceptives accounted for 76 percent of its services.

A very well reasoned approach and response. The other services PP provides has helped Millions on yearly basis. Great!!! BUT! The American Taxpayer refuses to fund Abortions. THE OUTRIGHT MURDER OF MILLIONS OF CHILDREN SINCE IT'S INCEPTION! Any research done on its founding and founder will prove that it was created to stop the "lower and colored" classes from reproducing!

Common Sense Works for ME!!!

The U.S. just sent a carrier strike group to confront China

By David Larter, Navy Times6:43 a.m. EST March 4, 2016

Aircraft carrier John C. Stennis has sailed into the South China Sea to exercise their freedom to navigate through the tense region. The show of force comes a week after the head of U.S. Pacific Command said China was militarizing the region.

This article first appeared March 3 at 4:15 p.m. and has been updated

The U.S. Navy has dispatched a small armada to the South China Sea.

The carrier John C. Stennis, two destroyers, two cruisers and the 7th Fleet flagship have sailed into the disputed waters in recent days, according to military officials. The carrier strike group is the latest show of force in the tense region, with the U.S. asserting that China is militarizing the region to guard its excessive territorial claims.

Stennis is joined in the region by the cruisers Antietam and Mobile Bay, and the destroyers Chung-Hoon and Stockdale. The command ship Blue Ridge, the floating headquarters of the Japan-based 7th Fleet, is also in the area, en route to a port visit in the Philippines. Stennis deployed from Washington state on Jan. 15.

The Japan-based Antietam, officials said, was conducting a "routine patrol" separate from the Stennis, following up patrols conducted by the destroyer McCambell and the dock landing ship Ashland in late February.

The stand-off has been heating up on both sides. After news in February that the Chinese deployed an advanced surface-to-air missile battery to the Paracel Islands, U.S. Pacific Command head Adm. Harry Harris told lawmakers that China was militarizing the South China Sea.

"In my opinion China is clearly militarizing the South China Sea," Harris testified on Feb. 24. "You’d have to believe in a flat Earth to believe otherwise."

Overnight, Chinese officials dismissed claims that China was militarizing the region, pointing to the Stennis's patrol as evidence that the U.S. was to blame for the increased military tensions.

“The accusation [that China is militarizing the region] can lead to a miscalculation of the situation,” said Fu Ying, a spokeswoman for China's National People's Congress. “If you take a look at the matter closely, it’s the US sending the most advanced aircraft and military vessels to the South China Sea."

A Pacific Fleet spokesman downplayed the heavy U.S. presence in the region.

"Our ships and aircraft operate routinely throughout the Western Pacific — including the South China Sea — and have for decades," Cmdr. Clay Doss said in a statement. "In 2015 alone, Pacific Fleet ships sailed about 700 combined days in the South China Sea."

However, experts say sending Stennis and its air wing to the South China Sea is a clear signal to China and the region.

"Clearly the Navy and DoD is demonstrating its full commitment to presence and freedom of navigation in the region,” said Jerry Hendrix, a retired Navy captain and analyst with the Center for a New American Security in Washington, D.C. “With the full carrier strike group and the command ship, the Navy is showing the scope of its interests and ability to project presence and power around world.”

The destroyer Lassen's vaunted October patrol within the 12-mile limit of China's man-made South China Sea islands was the first challenge of China's sovereignty over the Spratly Islands since Chinese land-reclamation projects began there.

On Jan. 30, the destroyer Curtis Wilbur patrolled near Triton Island, part of the Paracel Islands chain China also claims.

Six nations in the region lay claim to parts or all of the disputed islands chains. The Spratly Islands, a collection of reefs, rocks and other natural features, have been the site of extensive Chinese land reclamation projects. In the last two years, China has begun constructing islands on top of reefs and claiming territorial seas around them to gain exclusive fishing and resource rights to most of the South China Sea.These disputes have led to violence in the past. In 1974, a conflict between South Vietnam and China led to a shootout in the Paracel Islands, located between Vietnam and China's Hainan Island. That dispute continues.

Officials test water, skin care products in mysterious Wisconsin bacteria outbreak

National Institutes of Health
A lab dish shows a sample of Elizabethkingia bacteria from a previous outbreak

Health officials are testing water, skin care products and over-the-counter medications, and interviewing patients and families, to try to identify the source of an outbreak of a bacteria that has sickened 44 people in southern Wisconsin and may have contributed to 18 deaths.

Lab tests suggest a common source of the bacteria, called Elizabethkingia. But the investigation, which started in January, has not revealed the source, health officials said.

Most of the patients are elderly, with serious underlying health conditions. No cases have been reported among children, and there is no evidence of transmission from one person to another, said Karen McKeown, state health officer.

“We have not been able to identify the common theme between all of these that would point us to the source,” McKeown said. “We are pursuing every clue.”

Dr. Chris Braden of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is assisting in the probe, described the outbreak as a particularly challenging mystery.

“We have collected a lot of data ... and haven’t identified a source or even a strong hypothesis,” said Braden, deputy director of the CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. “This is a difficult one, even in the experience of doing these types of outbreaks in the past.”

The 44 cases are in the following counties: Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Jefferson, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sauk, Washington and Waukesha.

UW Hospital and Madison’s Veterans Hospital haven’t had any cases, and Meriter Hospital has had two since 2014, spokespeople said. Kim Sveum, spokeswoman for St. Mary’s Hospital, wouldn’t say if St. Mary’s has had any cases.

No cases linked to the Wisconsin outbreak have been reported in other states, McKeown and Braden said.

Nationwide, about 250 to 500 cases are known to occur each year, with a few localized outbreaks in recent years, said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner. The Wisconsin outbreak is the largest, he said.

Though 18 people have died, it’s not clear if their deaths were caused by the bacterial infection or their underlying health conditions, McKeown said. The conditions include cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and alcoholic cirrhosis.

Elizabethkingia bacteria rarely cause illness in humans, the state health department said. Symptoms can include fever, shortness of breath, chills or cellulitis, a skin infection.

The first cases were reported in late December, and the investigation started in early January. The state Department of Health Services didn’t announce the outbreak until Wednesday.

McKeown said doctors and “everybody who needed to know” were notified in early January. Health officials didn’t want to alarm the public, she said.

“It’s a difficult balancing act to decide between creating concern among the public and being very transparent,” she said. “We decided that with 44 patients, it was important for the people of Wisconsin to know what was going on even if we don’t have all of the answers yet.”

Five disease investigators from the CDC joined state health investigators last month in interviewing affected patients and families and gathering samples that might help pinpoint the source.

The investigators have been visiting homes, nursing homes and other nursing facilities, Braden said. Samples are being collected for testing from water, drains, skin care and personal care products, over-the-counter medications and medicines distributed by pharmacies, he said.

The 44 patients are on different water systems, with some using wells, so the source doesn’t appear to be a water distribution system, Braden said.

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, part of UW-Madison, has been testing patient samples and collecting environmental samples to ship to the CDC, said David Warshauer, the lab’s deputy director of communicable diseases.

Elizabethkingia is resistant to some antibiotics, but other antibiotics are effective, McKeown said. Some patients are being treated with a combination of antibiotics, she said.

Previous outbreaks of Elizabethkingia in the U.S. have been associated with hospitals, but the Wisconsin outbreak appears to be different, Braden said.

“It looks like, for the most part, it’s being transmitted in the community somewhere,” he said.

Elizabethkingia has long been known to be in the environment, Braden said. “It can be in soil, it can be in water, it can be on surfaces,” he said.

It is named after Elizabeth King, who first reported on the bacteria in 1959 while at the CDC.

The Wisconsin outbreak involves anophelis, a species of Elizabethkingia first identified in 2011 in mosquitoes. It’s unclear if mosquitoes transmit the bacteria.
