Putin tells FSB to strengthen controls over refugees heading to Russia and Europe

President Vladimir Putin has called on Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) to closely monitor people arriving in the country as refugees and also traveling onward into Europe, while stressing that the EU refugee crisis has nothing to do with Russia's actions in Syria.

"Control over the flows of refugees heading both to Russia and also on transit to European countries should be strengthened," Putin said at a meeting with the FSB collegium on Friday, where objectives for the state security service for the near future have been defined.

Putin also pointed out that "the so-called refugee crisis emerged long before Russia started its anti-terror operations in Syria." Saying that there are refugees from Afghanistan on the Macedonian border, the president said: "What do Russia's actions in Syria have to do with it?" He added: "Nothing."

"The cause of this refugee crisis is the destabilization of entire regions of the world, first of all in the Middle East," the Russian president said, adding that all Moscow's efforts in the region are aimed at stabilizing the situation in the countries suffering from terrorism, and to provide conditions for these countries' nationals to return to their homes.

The president also stressed the necessity to "safely close the territory of Russia" from penetration of militants from the Middle East and other regions, and to "uncover and neutralize” those who are involved in terrorism activities globally.

"In this context, I would like to say that Russia and its Armed Forces have timely started operations in Syria... Thanks also to [the FSB’s] efforts, the activities of clandestine groups that were ready to strike a blow at our country have been suppressed," Putin said.

Russia Bans US GMO Imports, by F. William Engdahl . . . at his best!!!

http://journal-neo.org/2016/02/26/russia-bans-us-gmo-imports/

Screen-Shot-2016-02-12-at-9.15.51-AM-624x370-300x178

Russia is making consequent its decision last fall to ban the commercial planting of Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO in its agriculture acreage. The latest decision, effective February 15, 2016 does not at all please Monsanto or the US Grain Cartel.

On February 15, a Russian national import ban on soybeans and corn imports from the United States took effect. The Russian food safety regulator Rosselkhoznadzor announced that the ban was because of GMO and of microbial contamination and the absence of effective US controls on soybean and corn exports to prevent export of quarantinable grains, also known as microbial contamination. The Russian food safety regulator added that corn imported from the US is often infected with dry rot of maize. In addition, he said, corn can be used for GMO crops in Russia. The potential damage from import and spread of quarantinable objects on the territory of Russia is estimated at $126 -189 millionannually.

Striking the heart of the GMO cartel

The Russian decision is a huge blow to USA agribusiness. For decades, the US grain cartel companies–ADM, Cargill, Bunge–have dominated the global trade in soybeans and corn, the most widely used animal feed for cattle, pigs, chickens because of its high protein content.

Today, the contamination of national agriculture and the food chain in different countries, even those banning planting of GMO crops, typically comes in through a back door, namely, the free import of GMO contaminated corn and soybeans. I’ve been told by people in a position to know that EU agriculture policy is determined less by European farmer organizations, for example, than by the large US agribusiness lobby of Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, Cargill and friends. Similarly, though until recently the Chinese government officially banned planting or licensing of GMO crops inside China’s commercial agriculture, GMO has inundated the country via a loophole that allows unrestricted import of GMO soybeans. Today more than 60% of all soybeans consumed in China or used for animal feed is GMO. The Russian decision, to my knowledge is the first blow to be struck against the powerful GMO agribusiness cartel. Thank US sanctions in effect that the crisis created the opportunity.

As a long-term two year independent laboratory rat experiment has demonstrated, a diet of GMO soybeans or GMO corn over a period of more than six months produces virulent tumors in the GMO-fed rats and excessive early mortality. Were we to eat a diet of McDonald GMO-contaminated hamburgers for a six month period, I shudder to imagine the human damage that would wreak. McDonalds hamburger patties, I was told by an insider in the grain trade, contains beef supplemented with up to 30% GMO soybeans. Today almost 100% of soybeans on the world market are GMO, most from Monsanto.

With this latest ban, the Russian authorities almost make complete their decision, announced September 2015, to rid the country of GMO for consumption by humans oranimals.

That decision still left a gaping loophole by not also banning GMO soybeans and GMO corn. After this latest decision, now the only loophole remaining, which is still significant, to rid Russian agriculture entirely of GMO contamination, is to extend the GMO soybean and GMO corn import ban to all countries which cannot conclusively demonstrate their corn or soybeans are GMO free, using the same criteria used for US soybean and corn imports.

Today the USA is the world’s largest followed by Argentina and Brazil. The three countries produce 85% of all world soybeans. And almost all of that, aside from pockets of certified GMO-free acreage in Brazil, is GMO contaminated.

Then come India and China, each with around 5% of the world total. China recently changed its GMO policy and seems intent on the dubious policy of becoming a leading GMO soybean and maize producer with the $43 billion ChemChina takeover bid last month of Swiss GMO and pesticide giant, Syngenta.

Soybeans are high protein and are used in almost every industrial food product today from chocolate bars (lecithin) to the feed for KFC fried chicken, to soy drinks. Because of the power of the GMO lobby over the past two decades, almost all that soybean food is GMO. As well, the GMO comes into the food chain via so-called high protein “power feed,” a mix of soybeans and corn. Soybean meal and soybean hulls are widely used in animal feeds. This 44% – 48% protein meal is the most common source of protein in feed used in poultry, hog and dairy rations. Corn Gluten Meal, made from processing corn, has a 60% protein content and is used widely for poultry and dairy cattle feed in the USA, Canada and the EU.

Despite the fact that a majority of EU member countries, including Germany, have chosen to ban planting of GMO, a Brussels loophole permits ADM and Cargill unlimited import of soybeans or corn that is GMO. That way the food chain is contaminated via GMO in the animal diet.

Since near 93% of USA corn today and 94% of its soybeans are GMO today, a safe rule-of-thumb is the precautionary principle–ban it unless proven GMO-free, which is precisely what Russian authorities have done. The Precautionary Principle is simply that, if regulatory authorities are not 100% certain it is GMO-free, prohibit it.

The US-based agribusiness cartel, led by Cargill and Monsanto, ensured that the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Agriculture, written by a former Vice President of Cargill, Daniel Amstutz, prioritized the right of free trade above that of national food health and safety. The latest move by the Russian Federation authorities shows that a major food-producing nation, today surpassing the USA as world’s largest grain producer, in part thanks to the foolish US sanctions on Russia, is prioritizing the health and safety of its citizens above the corporate interests of agribusiness. That’s a healthy development.

Any city or nation that champion sinful practices on earth will face God’s wrath. #Wisewords #EndTime #JudgmentDay

Any city or nation that champion sinful practices on earth will not last long, but it will fail. God will bring down any nation that arrogantly promote promiscuity and violence. Also, people who follow multitude to commit sin will also be destroyed. Meanwhile, the righteousness of God will be established among his own people, and their light will shine until the end of age. Therefore, believers must be vigilant not to participate in sinful practices their societies may be promoting. Every Christian must do his/her best to do God’s will; they must make decisive efforts to camp with God in their decisions and practices so that God can be glorified, and so that they can escape God’s imminent judgement that will soon come upon wicked people.

Intense Russian air strikes on rebel bastions ahead of ceasefire

Beirut (AFP) - Russian warplanes carried out intense air strikes on rebel strongholds in Syria on Friday hours before a ceasefire was due to come into force, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

Russia dismissed the reports and said it was continuing strikes on "terrorist organisations" ahead of the truce.

The partial ceasefire between regime forces and non-jihadist rebel fighters is due to take effect at midnight Friday (2200 GMT) Damascus time. It does not include the Islamic State jihadist group and the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front.

"From last night to this morning there have been Russian air strikes that are more intense than usual on rebel bastions including on Eastern Ghouta east of Damascus, in the north of Homs province and in the west of Aleppo province," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Air strikes in the non-jihadist rebel-held Qabtan al-Jabal area of Aleppo province killed eight members of the same family including three children on Thursday night, the monitor said.

"There were at least 25 air strikes on Eastern Ghouta," a main rebel bastion where the predominant opposition faction is the Jaish al-Islam movement, Abdel Rahman said.

"At least 10 of those hit Douma", an area there, said the Britain-based monitor, which relies of a wide network of sources in Syria.

"At the same time regime forces have violently shelled the city," Abdel Rahman said.

"It's more intense than usual. It's as if they (the Russians and the regime) want to subdue rebels in these regions or score points before the ceasefire," he said.

Russian air strikes also hit the Daret Ezza area in western Aleppo province and Talbisseh city in Homs province.

In these areas, as in Ghouta, rebels outnumber Nusra fighters, the monitor said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the Observatory's reports.

"The Russian air force is certainly continuing its operation in Syria" but against "terrorist organisations," he said.

Since Moscow launched air strikes in Syria in September, it has been accused of hitting non-jihadist rebel groups in support of the Damascus regime, a longtime ally.

Abdel Rahman said the implementation of the partial truce will be complicated as Nusra are allied with rebels -- Islamist and non-Islamist -- in several parts of Syria.

Their "territories overlap especially in Idlib and Aleppo provinces. It will be very complex," Abdel Rahman said.

More than 270,000 people have been killed since the war erupted in March 2011, and millions have fled their homes.

Intense Russian air strikes battered rebel bastions across Syria on Friday, a monitor said, just hours before a midnight deadline for a landmark ceasefire in the country's five-year civil war.

With the ceasefire due to take effect at 2200 GMT on Friday, US President Barack Obama has warned Damascus and key ally Moscow that the "world will be watching".

Both President Bashar al-Assad's regime and the main opposition body have agreed to the deal -- which allows fighting to continue against the Islamic State (IS) group and other jihadists.

The agreement brokered by Russia and the United States marks the biggest diplomatic push yet to help end Syria's violence, but has been plagued by doubts after the failure of previous peace efforts.

Members of the 17-nation group backing the process are to meet in Geneva on Friday to work out further details of the so-called "cessation of hostilities", which is then expected to be endorsed by the UN Security Council, diplomats said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said Russia and the regime had launched a wave of attacks on non-jihadist rebel areas ahead of the deadline.

"It's more intense than usual. It's as if they want to subdue rebels in these regions or score points before the ceasefire," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Russia launched air strikes in Syria last September saying it was targeting "terrorists" but critics have accused Moscow of hitting rebel forces in support of Assad, a longtime ally.

- Complex battlefields -

The Observatory said there had been Russian strikes overnight on rebel bastions including the Eastern Ghouta region outside Damascus, the north of Homs province and the west of Aleppo province.

There was also intense regime shelling of the rebel-held city of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, he said.

The Kremlin dismissed reports of attacks on non-jihadist rebels.

"The Russian air force is certainly continuing its operation in Syria" but against "terrorist organisations," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The intensified attacks prompted Turkey, a key supporter of opposition forces, to express worries over the viability of the ceasefire.

"We are seriously concerned over the future of the ceasefire because of the continuing Russian air raids and ground attacks by forces of Assad," presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters in Ankara.

The complexity of Syria's battlefields -- where moderate and Islamist rebel forces often fight alongside jihadist groups like the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front -- has raised serious doubts about the feasibility of a ceasefire.

Diplomats are reported to be working to define areas that will fall under the partial truce and to set up monitoring mechanisms.

The UN's Syria envoy has said he hopes the agreement will lead to a resumption of peace talks which collapsed earlier this month in Geneva.

Russia and the United States are on opposing sides of the conflict, with Moscow backing Assad and Washington supporting the opposition, but the two powers have been making a concerted push for the ceasefire to be respected.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised to do "whatever is necessary" to ensure the ceasefire is implemented. Iran, another key Assad ally, has said it is confident the regime will respect the agreement.

Huddling with his national security advisors in Washington on Thursday, Obama put the onus for upholding the ceasefire firmly on the regime and Russia.

- Doubts, pessimism -

He said he was not "under any illusions" about possible pitfalls, but that the ceasefire could help bring about an end to the war.

"A lot of that is going to depend on whether the Syrian regime, Russia, and their allies live up to their commitments," Obama said.

"The coming days will be critical, and the world will be watching."

Obama also said the US-coalition that launched air strikes against IS in Syria and Iraq in 2014 was making progress, citing territorial gains.

"More people are realising that ISIL is not a caliphate, it's a crime ring," he said, using an alternative acronym for the group.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has been a major booster of the ceasefire but others in Washington have been less optimistic about the chances of ending a conflict that has left more than 270,000 dead and forced millions from their homes.

"There's pessimism, not expectation, pessimism," a senior US official told AFP, citing what he said was Russia's history of making then breaking ceasefire commitments in conflicts in Georgia and Ukraine.

"What real incentives do the Russians have to act in good faith?" asked Shadi Hamid, a Middle East expert and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

"There is no credible threat of military force and without a credible threat of military force, the Russians are going to act like they have been acting for the past several years."

Kerry has warned that Washington is considering a "Plan B" to deal with Syria if the ongoing efforts fail, but has not provided any details.

You are right, Jan: there is a so-called 'collective karma' out of which entire cities or nations may derive punishment for their sins; in the end, as in Sodom and Gomorrah, only the virtuous escape unharmed.

Rivers Run Black In Peruvian Amazon After Multiple Oil Spills

Galactic Free Press's picture

Source: www.commondreams.org | Original Post Date: February 23, 2016 –

“Those responsible, where are they?” Water supply and delicate ecosystem contaminated by spate of oil spills in Amazon.

A disastrous spate of oil spills in the Peruvian Amazon have gone from bad to worse in recent days, leaving Indigenous tribes frantically trying to clean up the mess left by the nation’s state-owned oil company.

The catastrophic ruptures in Petroperu’s Northern Peruvian Pipeline occurred on January 25th and February 3rd and have threatened the water supply of nearly 10,000 indigenous people, says Amazon Watch.

On Monday, Petroperu officials confirmed to Reuters that the oil has poured into two critical Amazon River tributaries that eight Achuar tribes depend on for water.

According to the news agency, these two tributaries of the Amazon River, the Chiriaco and Morona rivers, are now filled with 3,000 barrels of oil.

Critics charge that the spills continued to spread and caused far worse damage after the responsible company, Petroperu, failed to act to contain the oil released by the pipeline breakages.

A third pipeline rupture was rumored on February 19, reports Amazon Watch, but the state-owned petroleum company took to Twitter to deny those reports.

The devastating spills occurred mere months after Indigenous activists staged massive protestsagainst Peru’s oil industry in September.

Over the weekend, local activist Marco Arana Zegarra posted horrific images of the oil’s spread in the Chiriaco tributary:

Derrame de petróleo en Chiriaco ayer. Ya impusieron leve multa. Cuándo la renuncia de responsables? @FAFrenteAmplio pic.twitter.com/OwZOWVZUKz

— Marco Arana Zegarra (@vozdelatierra) February 20, 2016

“Those responsible? Where are they?” Zegarra appealed.

Los responsables? Dónde están? En mitin del @FAFrenteAmplio hoy en Lambayeque: destitución de Pdte. de Petroperú ya! pic.twitter.com/HN6f5y1OFj

— Marco Arana Zegarra (@vozdelatierra) February 20, 2016

Waterways flow with black sludge and trees and flowers are rendered nearly unrecognizable by a thick coating of oil in video footage of the spills:

“At least this time,” observed Zegarra, “Petroperu has given Indigenous populations suits to wear for cleaning up oil.”

Por la menos esta vez Petroperú ha dado trajes a poblaciones indígenas que son empleadas para limpieza de petróleo pic.twitter.com/LwHyLvG0j1

— Marco Arana Zegarra (@vozdelatierra) February 19, 2016

Petroperu president German Velasquez “denied reports the company paid children to clean up the oil,” reports the Guardian, but then he went on, perhaps damningly, to say that “he was evaluating firing four officials, including one who may have allowed children to collect the crude.”

“It’s important to note that the spills…are not isolated cases. Similar emergencies have emerged as a result of defects in sections of the pipeline,”
the national environmental regulator said, according to the Guardian.

The regulator “ordered Petroperu to replace parts of the pipeline and improve maintenance,”states Reuters. The Guardian reports thatPetroperu will face fines of up to $17 million if it is proven that the oil spills have affected the health of locals.

“This environmental disaster is just the latest in a long history of oil and gas leaks in the area,”laments Indigenous rights group Survival International, observing that “[m]ore” than 70% of the Peruvian Amazon has been leased by the government to oil companies.”

The group translates a call to action by AIDESEP, an organization that fights for indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, in which it pleads for “international public opinion, the media, NGOs and civil society to pay attention to this serious event that puts in danger the lives of thousands of people living in the area who have traditionally been neglected.”
