London (AFP) - A man was being held in custody Sunday after three people were stabbed at a London Underground train station in an attack police were treating as a "terrorist incident".

One witness shouted "You're no Muslim" at the suspect as he was pinned down by officers at a suburban police station, amateur video footage showed, while a pool of blood was seen in the ticket hall.

Sky News reported that witnesses had said the lone suspect spoke of Syria and had "apparently shouted 'this is for Syria'," although it did not quote anyone.

Police could not confirm the report when contacted by AFP and it is not evident from video footage circulating online.

Saturday's attack came at the end of a week in which the British parliament voted to extend air strikes on the Islamic State group (IS) from Iraq into Syria.

The stabbings also come less than a month after the November 13 jihadist rampage in Paris, claimed by IS, which killed 130 people.

Police said one man sustained serious knife injuries in the east London attack, but they were not thought to be life-threatening, while two others sustained minor injuries.

Britain's Counter-Terrorism Command is investigating.

"We are treating this as a terrorist incident," CTC leader Richard Walton said in a statement.

- 'Drop the knife!' -

Amateur video showed a pool of blood and bloody footprints at the ticket gates of Leytonstone Tube station.

Shouts are heard as the suspect is seen remonstrating with people before swinging at one of them.

Footage shows officers shouting "Drop the knife!" and firing Taser electric stun guns, one of which connects.

"Who is this idiot?" one onlooker said of the suspect, adding: "Yes! Stupid idiot," after the man is Tasered.

Officers shout "Put the knife down!" and "Drop it now!" at the stunned man, who did drop the short-bladed knife as he quivered on the ground.

On his front, the man was handcuffed behind his back while another officer pinned him down with his knee and passers-by were told to get back.

One man then shouted at the suspect: "You ain't no Muslim, bruv! You're no Muslim, bruv! You ain't no Muslim!"

The hashtag YouAintNoMuslimBruv was trending on Twitter on Sunday as people reacted to the news.

Witness Khayam told the BBC that when the suspect was taken to a police van, "I saw pedestrians shouting at him... one pedestrian tried to throw a bottle."

He said one victim was taken out on a vertical stretcher.

Witness Michael Garcia, 24, a financial analyst from Leytonstone, said he had seen "a guy, an adult, lying on the floor with a guy standing next to him brandishing a knife of about three inches (7.5 centimetres)", the BBC reported.

"He was screaming 'go on, then, run' to everyone else. He was pacing back and forth next to the guy on the floor."

- Terror threat level 'severe' -

Police said they were called at 7:06 pm (1906 GMT) Saturday to reports of a number of people being stabbed at the Central Line station.

"The male suspect was reportedly threatening other people with a knife," Scotland Yard police headquarters said, adding that a man was arrested and taken to an east London police station where he remains in custody.

Britain's national terror threat level was raised in August 2014 to severe, the second-highest of five levels, meaning an attack is considered highly likely.

"I would urge the public to remain calm, but alert and vigilant," Walton said.

London's transport system was hit in July 2005 by a series of suicide bomb attacks that killed 52 people.

Leytonstone station was open again Sunday, with a police officer standing guard outside.

The station is decorated with mosaics depicting film scenes by director Alfred Hitchcock, who hails from Leytonstone, as does football icon David Beckham.

A spokeswoman for Prime Minister David Cameron's Downing Street office said: "There is an ongoing police investigation into the attack in London. We are monitoring the situation closely as further details emerge."

London Mayor Boris Johnson was briefed by the city's police chief, a spokesman said, praising the "swift and professional response" of the police.

Mainstream media abandons live viewership ratings reporting as wave of dissent shifts viewers to indy media outlets

Friday, December 04, 2015 by: J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) The mainstream media is collapsing. Legacy newspapers, news shows and broadcast networks ABC, CBS, and NBC continue to shed readers and viewers, in large part because of liberal, anti-American content, but also because technology is leaving them (and their advertisers) behind.

Another indication of that came recently after Fox, which is owned by 21st Century Fox, announced it would no longer publish or announce live ratings for its shows – a figure based on the estimated number of people watching the network's programs – because executives say the measure is no longer important, given that many people "record" programs for later viewing.

As reported by Bloomberg News, the network execs said so-called "live plus" same-day ratings for live events like awards and sports shows will still be provided, but for most pre-taped entertainment like weekly sitcoms and other scheduled programming, Fox will only measure viewership in three- and seven-day increments.

When the numbers no longer add up, they're suddenly 'worthless'

The move makes Fox the first large network to abandon the daily ritual of publishing ratings in emails to journalists that cover the television industry. Viewership figures, which come from the premier ratings service, Nielsen, are repackaged by network number-crunchers in a way that spins even disappointing viewership figures in a positive manner.

"There will no longer be THAT email in your inbox every morning at 8AM, because THAT email is no longer relevant," Dana Walden and Gary Newman, who share the titles of chairman and chief executive officer at Fox Television Group, said in a memo, as reported by Bloomberg News. "The connections between viewers and our shows today are more complex and, in many ways, deeper than ever – but they no longer only happen overnight."

Live audiences for all four major broadcast networks have been falling for years, Bloomberg News reported. First, viewers migrated to niche programming on cable channels, but then they began using technology like TiVo to record programming. And even more recently, an increasing number of viewers are abandoning traditional television and cable programming altogether in favor of
alternative media programming and streaming services like Hulu and Netflix, where users don't even have to have a TV to watch the shows and movies they want.

As further reported by Bloomberg News:

"Media executives have responded by stressing the growth in delayed viewing and trying to get more compensation. CBS Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves has said overnight ratings are 'worthless.'"

And what else would a
network TV executive say when his or her network continues to shed viewers and revenue? Back when networks had monopolies and near-monopolies on programming, overnight and daily viewership figures were all-important measures of popularity, used by networks to woo advertisers. But now, when even the number-crunchers and PR folks can no longer put lipstick on a pig, and make poor viewership figures look somewhat better, overnight ratings are "worthless."

Mainstream media is a dying brand

And speaking of corporate advertisers, some have been reluctant to pay for delayed viewing because they know that when a viewer tapes a show they generally fast-forward through the commercials. But some have been paying for shows that are viewed as much as seven days after they originally aired, up from the traditional three days, Bloomberg noted.

That won't capture all viewing, however, and that's a big reason ratings firm Nielsen plans to introduce a new tool that enables networks to count total viewers for each show, both on TV and online, for a month or more.

"Sports are the big exception to the drop in ratings. Live viewing for professional football has increased in the current season, as did ratings for Major League Baseball's World Series," Bloomberg reported.

That said, there is no reason to expect the current trend of decreased viewership and readership for mainstream media products
to rebound anytime soon, as Natural News editor Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, has predicted.

US unwilling to acknowledge Turkey-ISIS oil trade ‘smacks of direct patronage’ – Russian top brass

© Stringer / Reuters
Russia’s Defense Ministry has slammed Washington’s reaction to the outing of the secret oil trade between Turkey and Islamic State terrorists, calling it a “theatre of the absurd” and saying it looks rather like “direct patronage.”

“Finally, our colleagues from the State Department and the Pentagon have confirmed that the photo-proof, which we presented at a briefing [on December 2], of the origin and destination of the stolen oil, coming from the areas controlled by the terrorists, is authentic,” Major General Igor Konashenkov, a Defense Ministry spokesman, told a media briefing on Saturday.

“However, the US claim that they ‘don’t see the border crossings with tanker trucks crossing the border,’ raises a smile, if only, because the photos are still images,” he added.

The spokesman advised the American side to have a look through the videos, which were also presented by the Russian Defense Ministry, showing “how the tanker trucks not only drive through checkpoints at the Turkish border, but pass through them without even stopping.”

If the Russian evidence is not enough, the US and its allies should look at the footage from their own state-of-the art drones,“the number of which has recently tripled above the Turkish-Syrian border and oil-rich areas controlled by the terrorists,” he said.

According to Konashenkov, it should be impossible for the Western coalition to miss the oil smuggling business running between Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Turkey, given their range of technical capabilities in Syria and Iraq.

“So when US officials claim that they do not see oil smuggled by terrorists to Turkey, this is already not dodging the issue, but smacks of a direct patronage,” he added.

The spokesman pointed out that the coalition’s drones and warplanes have been intensively using Incirlik Air Base in Turkey for their operations.

On Friday, an unnamed US State Department official confirmed to Reuters that the Russian photos of thousands of oil tanker trucks in Syria were authentic.

However, the official stressed that he hasn’t seen “the imagery of the border crossing with trucks crossing the border, and that’s because I don’t believe that exists.”

Konashenkov also commented on a recent statement by US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who said at a Senate hearing that“over the past several weeks” the Pentagon has “intensified the air campaign against ISIL’s war-sustaining oil enterprise.”

With the US-led air campaign against Islamic State beginning in September 2014, the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman wondered: “Does this mean that over the last one and a half years the Americans were only destroying non-war-sustaining infrastructure of the militants?”

“Now we know where the bandits got the money to buy weapons, recruit new supporters, and stage bloody acts of terror, and why the territory controlled by IS increased by hundreds of times during this period,” he said.

Konashenkov called recent statements by the US State Department and Pentagon “‘a theater of absurd,’ based on double standards and the wordplay.”

“First, they see something – then they don’t. They divide the opposition into moderate and non-moderate. Even terrorists, in their view, can be bad or very bad,” he said.

“We are convinced that terrorism has no comparative degrees or nationalities. Terrorism – an absolute evil that must be fought in all its manifestations,” he added.

On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry released photo and video proof that the main smuggling route for oil produced by Islamic State terrorists runs through Turkey, accusing Turkish leadership, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of being involved in the criminal trade.

Russia’s claims were denied by both Ankara and Washington, with Colonel Steve Warren, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, calling Turkey “a great partner.”

27 Major Global Stocks Markets That Have Already Crashed By Double Digit Percentages In 2015
By Michael Snyder, on December 3rd, 2015

Anyone that tries to tell you that a global financial crisis is not happening is not being honest with you. Right now, there are 27 major global stock markets that have declined by double digit percentages from their peaks earlier this year. And this is truly a global phenomenon – we have seen stock market crashes in Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East. But because U.S. stocks are only down less than a thousand points from the peak earlier this year, most Americans seem to think that everything is just fine.

The truth, of course, is that everything is not fine. We are witnessing a pattern similar to what we saw back in 2008. Back then, Chinese stocks and other major stock markets started crashing first, and then U.S. stocks followed later.

And it appears that we may have entered the next leg down for markets in the western world this week. The Dow was down another 252 points on Thursday, and all of the major stock indexes in the U.S. are now negative for the year except for the NASDAQ. Unless there is a major turnaround in the coming weeks, the six year winning streak for U.S. stocks is likely over.

But when you step back and look at what has been happening globally, a much more ominous picture emerges. I spent much of the afternoon looking at stock market charts for the largest economies all over the globe. What I discovered was financial carnage that was much worse than I anticipated.

It turns out that there are 27 major global stock markets that have fallen by more than 10 percent from peaks that were set earlier this year. If you want to verify this information for yourself, just go to Trading Economics. As you can see, many of these stock market declines have been quite impressive…

1. China: down more than 30 percent

2. Saudi Arabia: down 26 percent

3. Germany: down about 13 percent

4. United Kingdom: down close to 12 percent

5. Spain: down 15 percent

6. Brazil: down more than 22 percent (13,000 points overall)

7. Malaysia: down 17 percent

8. Turkey: down 16 percent

9. India: down close to 12 percent

10. Chile: down 11 percent

11. Columbia: down about 30 percent

12. Peru: down more than 40 percent

13. Bulgaria: down more than 20 percent

14. Greece: down more than 30 percent

15. Poland: down about 19 percent

16. Malaysia: down 10 percent

17. Egypt: down 32 percent

18. Indonesia: down 18 percent

19. Canada: down 12 percent

20. Ukraine: down 45 percent

21. Morocco: down 13 percent

22. Ghana: down 17 percent

23. Kenya: down 27 percent

24. Australia: down 13 percent

25. Nigeria: down more than 30 percent

26. Taiwan: down 15 percent

27. Thailand: down 20 percent

We have not seen numbers like these since 2008, and trillions of dollars of stock market wealth has been wiped out globally. So the “nothing is happening” crowd is simply dead wrong. Stocks are already crashing all over the planet. Just because the big U.S. stock market crash has not happened quite yet does not mean that a major global financial crisis is not happening.

But do you know what is crashing here in this country?

Junk bonds.

At this point, yields on the riskiest junk bonds have risen to levels that we have not seen since the last financial crisis. As I have discussed repeatedly, yields on junk bonds spiked dramatically just before the stock market crash of 2008, and now it is happening again…

Yield On CCC Bonds - Chart from Federal Reserve

This is precisely the kind of behavior that we would expect to see if a major U.S. stock market crash was imminent. Personally, I watch the junk bond market very, very closely because it is such a key leading indicator. And according to Jeffrey Snider, it appears that “something” is starting to cause junk bonds to sell off at an alarming pace…

There isn’t much as far as confirmation, but it increasingly appears as if “something” just hit the triple hooks (CCC) in the junk bond bubble. At least as far as one view of it, Bank of America ML’s CCC implied yield, there was a huge selloff that brought the yield to a new cycle high (low in price) above even the 2011 crisis peak.

But just like in 2008, a lot of people will not heed the warnings because they don’t have the patience to watch long-term trends play out.

We live in a society where we expect constant instant gratification. We have instant coffee, video on demand and 48 hour news cycles. If something does not happen immediately, most of us quickly lose patience.

On my other website, I include a lot more stories about things that are trending in the news. For example, earlier today I wrote about the horrible shootings in San Bernardino, California and I explained why I believe that Islamic terror is now more of a threat to the American people than ever before.

But on this website I like to take a broader view of things. For months, I have been warning that conditions were perfect for another major global financial crisis, and since that time events have been unfolding in textbook fashion.

And as you can see from the numbers above, we have already entered a new global financial crisis. If you tried to tell someone in China, Brazil or Saudi Arabia that a financial crisis was not happening, they would just laugh at you. We need to start learning that the world doesn’t revolve around the United States.

Of course the U.S. is heading for tremendous difficulties as well. This is something that I covered yesterday. All of the fundamental economic numbers are absolutely screaming “recession”, and yet most of the “experts” are still forecasting good things for the coming year.

Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. None of the problems that caused the crisis the last time around have been fixed, and most of our “leaders” seem blind to what is happening at this moment even though the exact same patterns that played out in 2008 are playing out once again right in front of our eyes.

If you have been waiting for the next global financial crisis, you can stop, because it is already here.

As we move toward the end of 2015, let us hope for the best, but let us also get prepared for the worst.

Earth has lost a third of arable land in past 40 years, scientists say
Experts point to damage caused by erosion and pollution, raising major concerns about degraded soil amid surging global demand for food

Soil erosion takes effect on Suffolk farmland in the UK. Photograph: Alamy

The world has lost a third of its arable land due to erosion or pollution in the past 40 years, with potentially disastrous consequences as global demand for foodsoars, scientists have warned.

New research has calculated that nearly 33% of the world’s adequate or high-quality food-producing land has been lost at a rate that far outstrips the pace of natural processes to replace diminished soil.

The University of Sheffield’s Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, which undertook the study by analysing various pieces of research published over the past decade, said the loss was “catastrophic” and the trend close to being irretrievable without major changes to agricultural practices.

The continual ploughing of fields, combined with heavy use of fertilizers, has degraded soils across the world, the research found, with erosion occurring at a pace of up to 100 times greater than the rate of soil formation. It takes around 500 years for just 2.5cm of topsoil to be created amid unimpeded ecological changes.

“You think of the dust bowl of the 1930s in North America and then you realise we are moving towards that situation if we don’t do something,” said Duncan Cameron, professor of plant and soil biology at the University of Sheffield.

“We are increasing the rate of loss and we are reducing soils to their bare mineral components,” he said. “We are creating soils that aren’t fit for anything except for holding a plant up. The soils are silting up river systems – if you look at the huge brown stain in the ocean where the Amazon deposits soil, you realise how much we are accelerating that process.

“We aren’t quite at the tipping point yet, but we need to do something about it. We are up against it if we are to reverse this decline.”

The erosion of soil has largely occurred due to the loss of structure by continual disturbance for crop planting and harvesting. If soil is repeatedly turned over, it is exposed to oxygen and its carbon is released into the atmosphere, causing it to fail to bind as effectively. This loss of integrity impacts soil’s ability to store water, which neutralizes its role as a buffer to floods and a fruitful base for plants.

Degraded soils are also vulnerable to being washed away by weather events fueled by global warming. Deforestation, which removes trees that help knit landscapes together, is also detrimental to soil health.

Researchers are presenting the new research at climate talks in Paris.

The steep decline in soil has occurred at a time when the world’s demand for food is rapidly increasing. It’s estimated the world will need to grow 50% more food by 2050 to feed an anticipated population of 9 billion people. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, the increase in food production will be most needed in developing countries.

The academics behind the University of Sheffield study propose a number of remedies to soil loss, including recycling nutrients from sewerage, using biotechnology to wean plants off their dependence upon fertilizers, and rotating crops with livestock areas to relieve pressure on arable land.

Around 30% of the world’s ice-free surfaces are used to keep chicken, cattle, pigs and other livestock, rather than to grow crops.

“We need a radical solution, which is to re-engineer our agricultural system,” Cameron said. “We need to take land out of production for a long time to allow soil carbon to rebuild and become stable. We already have lots of land – it’s being used for pasture by the meat and dairy industries. Rather than keep it separated, we need to bring it into rotation, so that that there is more land in the system and less is being used at any one time.”

Cameron said he accepted this would involve direct government intervention, funding for farmers and “brave” policymaking.

“We can’t blame the farmers in this. We need to provide the capitalisation to help them rather than say, ‘Here’s a new policy, go and do it,’” he said. “We have the technology. We just need the political will to give us a fighting chance of solving this problem.”
