MAJOR RETAILER STASHES FOOD, GOLD FOR 'DOOMSDAY'

Chairman: 'We are not big fans of Wall Street'

Overstock has set aside gold in preparation of a financial collapse.

The chairman of the American online retailer Overstock, Jonathan Johnson – who’s also running for governor of Utah – said his company is so sure a financial collapse is on the way, the firm’s leading executives have accumulated and set aside about $10 million in gold and silver coins to cover the costs of payroll and keep both employees and operations in the black.

At a recent United Precious Metals Association conference, Johnson explained how Overstock is taking advantage of Utah’s laws that allow it to use gold as a legal tender, via coins based off the one ounce gold coins issued by the Treasury Department.

He said, Zero Hedge reported: “We are not big fans of Wall Street and we don’t trust them. We foresaw the financial crisis, we fought against the financial crisis that happened in 2008; we don’t trust the banks still and we foresee that with QE3 [quantitative easing] and QE4 and QE [upcoming], that at some point there is going to be another significant financial crisis.”

So what’s Overstock’s answer?

“We would be prepared when that happens,” he said. “One thing that we do that is fairly unique: we have about $10 million in gold, mostly the small button sized coins, that we keep outside of the banking system. We expect that when there is a financial crisis there will be a banking holiday. I don’t know if it will be two days, or two weeks or two months. We have $10 million in gold and silver in denominations small enough that we can use for payroll.”

“The Liberty Amendments” is the blueprint on how to fix our broken government by Mark Levin, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of “Liberty and Tyranny” and “Ameritopia.” Order it today at WND’s Superstore.

The aim, he said, is to “be able to keep our employees paid, safe and our site up and running during a financial crisis,” Zero Hedge reported.

Moreover, Johnson said the company was also putting away food for employees in case of emergency.

“We also happen to have three months of food supply for every employee that we can live on,” he said.

Are there really little-known prophetic signs happening today that can shed light on the world’s situation? See the answers in the stunning new “End Times Eyewitness.”

Johnson, as well as Overstock chief executive Patrick Byrne, see fiat money as the demise of America’s economy. Many economists and money watchers say a return to the gold standard, where paper money was backed by physical gold, would help curb inflation, keep government spending in check, stabilize markets and allow the U.S. economy to grow its wealth by more honest means.

US To Begin ‘Direct Action On The Ground’ In Iraq And Syria

Andrew Harrer—Bloomberg/Getty ImagesAshton Carter listens during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the U.S. military strategy in the Middle East in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 27, 2015.

This may mean some American soldiers "will be in harm's way, no question about it," Carter said

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday that the U.S. will begin “direct action on the ground” against ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria, aiming to intensify pressure on the militants as progress against them remains elusive.

“We won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground,” Carter said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee, using an alternative name for the militant group.

Carter pointed to last week’s rescue operation with Kurdish forces in northern Iraq to free held by ISIS.

Carter and Pentagon officials initially refused to characterize the rescue operation as U.S. boots on the ground. However, Carter said last week that the military expects "more raids of this kind" and that the rescue mission "represents a continuation of our advise and assist mission."

This may mean some American soldiers "will be in harm's way, no question about it," Carter said last week.

After months of denying that U.S. troops would be in any combat role in Iraq, Carter late last week in a response to a question posed by NBC News, also acknowledged that the situation U.S. soldiers found themselves in during the raid in Hawija was combat.

"This is combat and things are complicated," Carter said.

During Tuesday's Senate hearing, Carter said Wheeler "was killed in combat."

White House deputy press secretary Eric Schultz on Tuesday said the administration has "no intention of long term ground combat". He added that U.S. forces will continue to robustly train, advise and assist.

A feisty Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said on Tuesday in the Senate Armed Services committee hearing that the U.S. effort in Syria is a "half-assed strategy at best," and said that the U.S. is not doing a "damn thing" to bring down Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Carter on Tuesday pushed back against that notion.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged that the "balance of forces" has tilted in Assad's favor.

Pentagon investigates Afghan sex abuse coverup claims

AFP

US defense officials said they were opening an investigation into allegations of child sex abuse by Afghan security forces and reports that US personnel deliberately overlooked it.

The probe by the Pentagon's inspector general comes on Tuesday, after The New York Times last month reported that US troops in Afghanistan had been instructed by their superiors to overlook cases of Afghan police or commanders sexually abusing teenage boys, even if it took place on military bases.

The practice is known as "bacha bazi," which means "boy play" in local languages.

"Is there -- or was there -- any guidance, informal or otherwise, to discourage reporting by DoD (Department of Defense) affiliated personnel?" a memo from the inspector general's office asks.

"What training on identifying and responding to alleged child sexual abuse... has been conducted or planned?"

The memo, sent to leaders across the US military, also asks for information on the number of cases of child sex abuse alleged against Afghan government officials that were reported to US or coalition forces.

The Times based its report on accounts from multiple soldiers and the father of a marine who was killed in 2012.

The report said a former US special forces captain beat up an Afghan militia commander for keeping a boy chained to his bed as a sex slave, and afterward was stripped of his command and withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The Afghan Interior Ministry has rejected reports that it was not addressing the practice of bacha bazi, which it called a "heinous and indecent act" that is illegal under Afghan laws.

The Afghan government has in the past tried to crack down on the ancient and outlawed practice of child abuse, which is prevalent across rural parts of the country.
