Dangerous Move To Implant Abortion-Inducing Device Into Teen Girls

August 18, 2015 |

Just weeks after a prominent health-care expert predicted that Democrats would begin a nationwide push for taxpayer-funded contraception for schoolgirls, including abortion-inducing drugs, Virginia is proving to be the next battleground.

The idea started in a Colorado pilot program, in which teenage girls were given contraceptives including implanted abortafacients known as long-acting reversible contraceptives, or LARCs, and intra-uterine devices, also called IUDs. The program showed marked reductions in teenage births and reported abortions. Efforts then began to enact a taxpayer-funded version of the program, but it died in the Colorado Legislature over conscience and religious liberty concerns.

Writing in the Washington Post, Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who is also a pediatric neurologist, hailed the Colorado numbers as a proven way to bring teenage pregnancies way down.

Over the past six years, Colorado observed a 40 percent decline in teen births and a 42 percent decline in teen abortions based on an innovative program that provided education, counseling, administrative support and long-acting, reversible contraceptives (LARCs) to providers and patients upon request,” wrote Northam.

“These long-acting birth control methods, which include intrauterine devices (IUDs), injectables and implants, can last up to 10 years. They have a failure rate of less than 1 percent compared with condoms and the pill, which have failure rates of around 18 percent and 9 percent respectively,” added Northam.

Northam made it very clear he wants Virginia to go down the same road.

“This is an issue Virginia needs to consider for the health of women of all ages, the health of our infants and the fiscal well-being of our commonwealth,” he said.

Northam also made a focused pitch for taxpayers to pick up the tab since IUDs and LARCs are far more expensive than oral contraceptives.

“As a physician and a policymaker, I believe all Virginia women should be informed about and have access to all possible reproductive health-care options so they can make the best decisions for their families,” he wrote.

Galen Institute President Grace-Marie Turner addressed the issue last month in a New York Times “Room for Debate” forum. In a subsequent interview, she cited this push as part of the “culture of death” promoted by the political left.

In response to Northam’s case for taxpayer-funded IUDs, Turner says it sets a troubling precedent for government.

“If the state is basically saying, ‘We don’t trust you,’ then we’re basically saying the state has to make all of your decisions for your life,” she said, noting this could set up a battle between government and parental rights.

“What if parents object to that?” she asked. “Is the state going to say, ‘No, we’ve decided that because we don’t want to have the state pay for the pregnancy and the delivery and perhaps Medicaid for the child after that. Therefore, we’re going to encourage young women to have these long-term contraceptives.’”

She also said Northam paid no attention in his Washington Post piece to the ethical and health concerns surrounding implantable contraception.

Indeed, Northam gave it just one sentence.

“Unfortunately, myths also abound with regard to LARCs and the safety of IUDs, in particular,” wrote Northam, while noting the devices have the backing of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Turner said that glosses over some major issues.

“Northam makes absolutely no reference about the moral, ethical, religious issues involved in this question,” she said. “He’s basically saying he’s looking at the numbers, that teen pregnancy can be reduced without any sense of what message does this send.”

Two major objections are in play simultaneously. Northam is asking taxpayers to pay for the program, regardless of whether such a plan violates their consciences.

“This is not something for the state to decide,” Turner said. “When the state says that we are going to use taxpayer dollars to pay for long-term contraceptives that can actually be abortafacients, that is condoning those. There are tens of millions of people in this country who have strong moral, religious, ethical convictions against that.”

Much like the Hobby Lobby case that landed at the Supreme Court, Turner expects any state that adopts this policy to end up in a long legal battle.

"For the state to say we're going to ignore [objections of conscience] and to use your tax dollars to pay for that, that is a violation of the First Amendment," she said. "I think we would see many court cases taking that, ultimately I hope, to the Supreme Court."

Turner is also concerned about the impact such a policy would have on middle-school and high-school girls.

"Having the government fund these long-term contraceptives for often poor teenage girls, tells these young women that taxpayers will pay for them to have sex without fear of pregnancy and that they don't have to be responsible for the consequences of their actions," Turner said. "Sex is not without consequences, even if pregnancy is not one of them."

She said the possible consequences range from physical to emotional.

"There's no such thing as safe sex," Turner said. "Are we telling these young women that they can have promiscuous sex and not have consequences? Of course, there are going to be consequences, not only in the form of sexually transmitted diseases but in the sense of what kind of an image are they developing of themselves."

And she said implanted devices that can prevent conception for up to a decade also carry some risks.

"We don't know the consequences for their health, of having contraceptives for a 19-year-old girl," she said. "The contraceptive may last for 10 years. Is she ever going to get her fertility back? You don't know that."

Thousands of Americans Protest Against Planned Parenthood at Over 300 Clinics in All 50 States

BY MICHAEL GRYBOSKI , CHRISTIAN POST REPORTER
August 22, 2015|2:42 pm

Pro-life activist Leslie Blackwell emceeing protest against a Planned Parenthood clinic in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, August 22, 2015.

RICHMOND, Va., — Thoursands of Americans protested outside Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the United States Saturday morning to speak out against the abortion giant that receives more than $500 million in taxpayer funding every year for its 700 clinics across the nation.

Organized by several pro-life organizations, the nationwide protest, known as the "National Day of Protest Against Planned Parenthood," was held outside over 300 clinics in all 50 states and Washington D.C.

The protests follow the release of seven undercover Planned Parenthood videos by the pro-life Center for Medical Progress, which show Planned Parenthood employees discussing the sell of aborted babies' body parts. The eighth video, set to release next week, reportedly shows the abortion provider selling babies born alive in their abortion clinics.

Leslie Blackwell, regional co-coordinator with the Silent No More Awareness Campaign who emceed the Richmond protest, told The Christian Post: "We had over 500 people here and that's great. Usually you're lucky to get 10. At Forty Days for Life sometimes you might get 20, but never the crowds like this. Its been exciting, just nonstop response."

Blackwell was compairing Saturday's protest to past vigils at the clinic long before the release of CMP's investigation of Planned Parenthood that reveals how it profits off the selling of babies aborted during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

Since July, the California-based pro-life group has released seven of 12 videos that purportedly show Planned Parenthood officials engaging in the illegal sell of aborted babies' body parts — and maybe even born alive infants — for profit.

Planned Parenthood has denied the allegations, arguing that the footage was doctored and selectively edited, despite the fact that hours of full-length videos and audio have accompanied each release.

Pro-Life Action League Executive Director Eric J. Scheidler, whose group helped organize the national protests, told CP that the goal of the "National Day of Protest" was to draw more attention to what Planned Parenthood is doing.

"Our primary message is the shocking revelation that Planned Parenthood sells baby parts. While this story has dominated the pro-life and Christian press over the past month, many regular Americans have still never heard about it," explained Scheidler.

"They deserve to know the truth about Planned Parenthood, an organization that receives over half a billion dollars every year from taxpayers. It is time for this corrupt organization to be deprived of all taxpayer funding and investigated by the U.S. Justice Department."

At the abortion clinic off North Hamilton Street, protesters gradually trickled in, some carrying signs that read: "Defund Planned Parenthood," "Abortion Kills Children," "2,290 Babies Died Here in 2014," and "The Smallest Lives Matter Defund PP."

Eventually, the number of demonstrators grew to the point that scores of them ended up going across the two-lane street and standing on the sidewalk in front of the clinic.

As local pro-life activists delivered remarks, the occasional passing vehicle honked, usually though not always in support of the protest.

The protest carefully followed regulations for their demonstration, including not standing on Planned Parenthood's property and staying clear of their parking lot entrance.

A pair of individuals wearing vests that read "Pro-Choice Clinic Escort" helped guide cars in and out of the clinic as the demonstration continued.

When asked by CP what message she and her allies wanted to send with the demonstration, Blackwell replied that "there's hope."

"This is a pivotal moment for all of us in the fight against abortion. Because I think these videos really touched a nerve," said Blackwell.

"People are so devastated at these barbaric videos and they know the truth. So, I mean, that's why you've seen this incredible outpouring of people to support these protests nationwide."

The Christian Post attempted to get a reaction to the protest from the Richmond-based Planned Parenthood facility, however, their representatives declined to give comment.

Thousands of Dead Fish Wash Up on Tianjin’s Shores, a Week After the Blasts

But Chinese officials say they found no toxic levels of cyanide in the water

Thousands of dead fish have washed up on the shores of the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, eight days after a series of deadly explosions at a warehouse killed at least 114 people, injured hundreds more, and left 69 people, mainly firefighters, still missing.

Photos shared on social media have racked up thousands of views since Thursday and show large numbers of dead fish gathered on the banks of the Haihe River, about 4 miles from the blast site, reports the state-run newspaper China Daily.

The huge die-off of fish has led residents to worry that toxic chemicals from the blast could have contaminated the waters around the city — the world’s 10th largest port.

Chinese authorities have confirmed that the warehouse at the center of the blast stored about 40 different hazardous chemicals — among them were 700 tons of highly toxic sodium cyanide, the New York Times reports.

But local environmental officials said they found no toxic levels of cyanide in the water where the dead fish appeared, although they were still investigating the precise cause of the mass deaths.

Den Xiaowen, director of the Tianjin Environmental Monitoring Center, said it was not unusual to see large quantities of dead fish in summer.

“When the temperature rises, oxygen will evaporate and fish may die of hypoxia,” he said at a press conference Thursday.

Authorities announced Thursday that eight out of 42 water-quality monitoring sites set up around the blast zone detected excessive levels of cyanide, with one site exceeding 356 times the normal level. Cleanup teams have set up quarantined zones to block the cyanide-tainted water and were still working to decontaminate the area, reports the state-linked Global Times.

Greece reverts back to a BARTER economy as global financial system unravels

Saturday, August 22, 2015 by: J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) Greece's finances and its national economy have both deteriorated so dramatically that now average citizens are being forced to do something they haven't had to do since the country was occupied by Nazi Germany: Barter for their basic needs and essentials.

As reported by Reuters, the rise in bartering comes amid a government-imposed cash squeeze stemming from an Athens-imposed three-week closure of the country's banks on June 28. Since then government capital controls, put in place to avoid a run on banks, have limited the supply of cash in the hands of ordinary Greeks.

Reuters further reported:

Wild boar and power cuts were Greek cotton farmer Mimis Tsakanikas' biggest worries until a bank shutdown last month left him stranded without cash to pay suppliers, and his customers without money to pay him.

Squeezed on all sides, the 41-year-old farmer began informal bartering to get around the cash crunch. He now pays some of his workers in kind with his clover crop and exchanges equipment with other farmers instead of buying or renting machinery.

'It's a nightmare'

Tsakanikas has become part of an expanding barter economy that many Greeks abhor because they see it as a step back from modern life, Reuters continued. However, many others are embracing it as a means to an end: Short-term economic survival.

When Tsakanikas rented a field in early August, he agreed he would pay for it with a portion of his clover crop.

"It's a nightmare. I owe many people money now - gas stations and firms that service machinery. I have to go to the bank every single day, and the money I can take out is not enough," said Tsakanikas, who also grows vegetables on about 150 acres.

"I've begun bartering in some forms - it existed in the past but now it is growing... Times have become really tough, and friends and relatives help each other out," he added, according to Reuters.

A growing number of Greek citizens are being forced into the barter economy, especially those living in rural areas, swapping goods and services in cashless transactions. The capital controls were put in place by the government of socialist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras just a few days before Greece became the first advanced economy to default on a loan from the International Monetary Fund. That forced Athens to request a third financial bailout, which was humiliating for many in the country.

And while capital controls are being eased a bit, Greeks can still only withdraw 420 euros a week from their bank accounts.

It's hard to estimate just how much of Greece's economy is now based on the barter system because so much of it is informal. However, anecdotal evidence indicates that barter is surging.

Indeed, many saw this coming.

Zero Hedge noted in a recent blog post that the site predicted in February that Greece's economic conditions would deteriorate to the point where, quoting Credit Suisse, the country would be "digitally bombed back to barter status."

Stock market is next to take a hit

Greece was in a perilous economic position anyway, but it became worse as negotiations for a new bailout deal – something Greece wanted but the IMF did not – dragged on. For every day without a deal, nearly 60 businesses closed, 613 Greeks lost full time jobs and the Greek economy lost 22 million euros.

But the debt crisis was really one of Tsipras' making. He, along with his fellow Syriza party members, rode to power on a promise of ending punishing austerity policies that were part of the original IMF and European Central Bank bailout agreement, but which were increasingly unpopular with the Greek public. Trouble is, the austerity was necessary because the Greek government was paying out more in public welfare than it was taking in as a result of taxes and other revenues.

As the economy has tanked and barter has become increasingly common – something that could happen in a collapsed U.S. economy - Greece has suffered a brain drain: While entrepreneurship and retail sales have fallen 70 percent, some 7,500 doctors have left the country since 2010.

UPDATE: Greece's bad economic news just keeps getting worse. In recent days, the Greek stock market Greek bank shares fell dramatically, dragging down the broader Greek stock market.

hi Miguel,

I think they should be thankful they have things to barter with, they are right in line with what is coming, bartering.
