The Upshot

Florida sinkhole swallows building

An enormous sinkhole has opened up in the town of Leesburg, Fla.,, and it's hungry. It's already gobbled up a garbage bin, an oak tree, the back wall of the building housing a salon and racks of supplies. You can watch a video charting its path of destruction above.

The chasm that caused Main Street Hair and Beauty Supply to collapse is about 60 feet wide and 20 feet deep. Although the street surrounding the building has also fallen prey to the pit, officials say thehole isn't growing. But the slowly sinking building is sparking growing concern for neighbors who live nearby. The sinkhole started after a torrential downpour at the end of June.

The heavy rains lead to plenty of pits opening in central Florida.

Since the 1950s, 3,100 sinkholes have been recorded in Florida. The naturally occurring holes open up when acidic groundwater dissolves underground rock formations. At the point, the formations are no longer able to support the ground above them, causing terra firma to collapse inward.

A neighbor across the street said he heard the sinkhole before he saw it. He told the Orlando Sentinel, "It woke me up. I heard a crack, a boom. I thought it was a wreck, like someone hit a transformer or something."

The pits have certainly opened up interest on the Web. A Guatemala City hole found under a grandmother's bed this week caused lots of speculation. In fact, some sharp-eyed commenters on Yahoo! suspect the hole to be caused by an abandoned well.

Lookups on Yahoo! for "guatemala sinkhole," "giant sinkhole under bed," and even "what causes sinkholes" continued to grow.

This is an excellent and at the same time, terrible report on food and water. View it and draw your own conclusions...

Why do people think that the "end of times" only involves end of humans? Why are we so egotistical? Maybe God is just reformatting, as He has done in the past. For those who don't believe in God, then if the earth someday becomes devoid of people and mammals, and maybe even devoid of sealife and plants, there will probably still BE a planet Earth, and there will definitely still be TIME ticking away. There's no end of TIME, there's no end of EARTH unless it completely destructs somehow, and besides, we won't know about it if we all die. So why worry? If there's an afterlife that's supposed to be better than this, why do people stress about "end of times" as we know it? The lack of people on the earth sounds like it would be BETTER for the planet in general.

I almost completely agree with you on this account, Kathleen. Actually, if I used the term 'End Times' to call this thread it was only to conform with the general usage. However, I have never lost sight of the correct way to express the notion, which is 'End of Ages' or an equivalent, where even the current trend among the translators of the Gospels is to use 'Ages' instead of 'Times'.

The part of your post that I am not so sure about is where you question that the lack of people on the Earth may be better for it... Sincerely, I don't know of any animal that destroys their habitat as humans do.

Could it be because all mammals exhale the dreaded CO2 that is the cause of all the dreaded global warming? Even the earths fauna would not exist without it, though. Unless the reason for the fauna was to produce O2 for the mammals. Can we really be wrong using the resources the earth gave us? Which if you believe in creationism, Means we were given the means and knowledge to utilize these generous resources? All of them. Sometimes you have to use reason instead science.
