In crisis, Greece rounds up immigrants

NEA VYSSA, Greece (AP) — Border police jeeps hurtle along hot, dusty tracks past potato fields on their way to the river that marks the Greek-Turkish border. Sirens blaring, the convoys have been repelling wave after wave of migrants.

Greece's remote Evros region has turned into Europe's main battleground against illegal immigration; more than two-thirds of people making the clandestine journey into the European Union pass through here from neighboring Turkey.

Greece launched an aggressive campaign this month to try to seal its 200-kilometer (130-mile) northeastern border, as it faces a debilitating financial crisis that has caused a swell in joblessness and a surge in racist attacks against immigrants with dark skin.

The police operation has brought nearly 2,000 additional border guards to the Turkish frontier previously manned by about 500 officers. They fanned out with dogs, night vision equipment and flat-bottomed boats for 24-hour patrols of the Evros River that forms a natural border. At least 21 people have drowned or died of exposure crossing the river this year, while several have been listed as missing.

In Athens, the operation is being bolstered by mass roundups of suspected illegal immigrants. They are seen lined up on the streets of the capital every day, many in handcuffs, waiting to be put in detention until they can be deported. In the first week of the crackdown in early August, police said they apprehended nearly 7,000 people for identification checks; nearly 1,700 were slated for deportation.

Anwar, a 22-year-old man from Bangladesh, walked across the border near Orestiada, a small town wedged between Turkey and Bulgaria. Unaware of the immigration clampdown, he said he is looking for police so he can turn himself in. It's a well-worn ploy: Migrants have actively tried to get themselves taken to detention centers near Athens, assuming they will be released due to overcrowding and allowed to blend into the chaotic capital.

"I've come here to work," Anwar, who declined to give his full name because of his illegal status, said moments after crossing the border. "I know what will happen to me: They might keep me in detention for around three months, but then they'll let me out and I'll go to Athens."

Now, however, authorities are determined to swiftly deport illegal migrants they round up.

In a recent pre-dawn operation, authorities using thermal imaging cameras spotted a group of around 60 illegal immigrants on the Turkish side of the Evros River. Officers used spotlights, sirens and loud speakers to deter them from crossing, although fifteen immigrants still made it over to a river islet in a no man's land and were arrested.

Uniformed police officers from 25 countries are already helping Greece guard the Evros River as part of the European Union's border protection agency, Frontex. Greek police figures show more than 21,000 illegal migrants were arrested in the first six months of 2012 after crossing over from Turkey, with nearly all — 20,841 — caught along the northeastern land border rather than on one of the many Aegean islands near the Turkish coast. The figures show a nearly 29 percent increase from the same period last year.

Afghans currently make up the highest number of people crossing illegally, followed by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and an increasing number of people from war-ravaged Syria, according to the agency.

The police operation has faced strong criticism from human rights groups, local officials, and even police officers' associations — with criticism focusing on alleged racial profiling and police brutality. Allegations include arbitrary detention, beatings and degrading police treatment.

Police video showing riot police and other officers rounding up mostly South Asian immigrants as they got off a train that arrived at Athens' main station also received condemnation from local rights groups and leftwing opposition parties.

Amnesty International called on Greek authorities to stop the roundups immediately.

"While Greece has the right to control migration, it does not have the right to treat people like criminals purely because of the color of their skin," Amnesty's Jezerca Tigani said in a statement. He warned that many immigrants fleeing war zones and potential persecution from dictatorial regimes were being denied a fair asylum assessment.

"Greece may be going through financial difficulties while facing one of the highest migration flows among EU countries," Tigani said, "but these police operations violate international human rights standards and should stop immediately."

Police say migrants' rights are being respected.

"Our aim is to deter illegal immigrants and arrest traffickers, but the migrants' well-being and rights are always a main priority," said Orestiada police chief Yiorgos Salamangas.

The government insists the operation is working, reporting a drop in illegal border crossings by around 90 percent in the first week.

"This is a massive operation that is taking place in the country for the first time and it will continue in the long-term," police spokesman Christos Manouras said.

"It is widely accepted that the expulsion of immigrants who are here illegally is a national necessity, an issue of national survival."

Greece is a member of Europe's passport-free Schengen agreement but shares no borders with any of the other 25 member states. That has meant hundreds of thousands of irregular immigrants have been unable to cross the border into other European countries, trapping them in limbo in Athens and other Greek cities, typically in slum conditions.

As the country struggles through a fifth year of recession, illegal immigration and a rise in violent crime have become central issues in the political debate, with mainstream parties blamed by many for the country's near financial collapse facing opposition from more radical political groups.

The extreme right Golden Dawn party, described by political opponents as neo-Nazis, won nearly 7 percent of the vote in June general elections, a 20-fold jump since a national vote in 2009.

The party denies any involvement in a recent surge in anti-immigrant attacks, and says police should be more concerned by attacks on Greeks by foreign criminals.

In one suspected attack by racist gangs this month, an Iraqi man was stabbed in the street and died hours later in the hospital.

Anti-racism campaigners last month said immigrants living in Greece have been targeted in at least 300 violent attacks between early April and late July. The rise in hate crimes is believed to be one of the triggers of the government clampdown.

Authorities are using a newly built detention center near Athens and two converted police academy buildings in northeastern Greece to house detainees, while dozens of additional facilities are planned using converted Army bases.

Police associations argue that the massive deployment of manpower should have been delayed until more of those new facilities are ready. They cite the lack of detention capacity as a key reason for the country's inability to deal with illegal immigration.

It's a concern shared by local authorities in the Evros region, and many residents.

"As long as people know they can make it here and eventually live freely, they will keep coming," said 63-year-old Christos Kyriakidis. "Nothing will stop them."

China and Japan in a Headlock Over Heavily Disputed Islands

A tiny group of islands nestled just below Japan and hugging the side of China have caused waves of protests and a full blown cultural battle between the two rival countries this past week. These islands are situated in a major shipping route and are also surrounded by gas deposits. Known in Japan as the Senkaku and in China as Diaoyu, the dispute over the islands has escalated tensions, producing full-blown anti-Japanese protests in China on Sunday.

The protests in cities across China were sparked when Japanese nationalists landed on the islands early in the day to reemphasize their plans to keep the islands under Japanese control. The newest protest, consisting of 10 Japanese men, was not sanctioned by government officials and the activists have been taken in for questioning by the Japanese coast guard after they swam back to their vessels.

Leaders of the protest told Japanese officials, “We need to solidly reaffirm our own territory.” Reportedly, these activists were members of a conservative nationalist group in Japan. Their demonstration was in direct response to a Chinese landing on the islands just days before.

14 Hong Kong residents had stormed the islands by boat on Friday in order to make a stand for the islands, demanding that Japan release them. Chinese activists on the mainland supported the 14 demonstrators by burning flags and shouting slogans. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has argued that Japan has threatened China’s territorial sovereignty. Japanese officials deported the demonstrators straightaway in an effort to smooth tensions between the two countries, the Washington Post notes.

That approach doesn’t seemed to have cooled protests by both Chinese and Japanese citizens. Sunday’s protests in cities such as Hong Kong, Guangshou and Shanghai, were raw and more than likely sanctioned by the Chinese government. One protester in Hong Kong told Reuters, “They should return the islands to us and apologize.” That sentiment was reflected in the thousands of others marching through China’s busiest streets.

The protests took a slightly violent turn when some demonstrators proceeded to attack Japanese businesses and cars, according to some reports. The New York Times notes that some photos suggested that tens of thousands of protesters thronged together in the streets. Banners carried weighty messages, such as “Defend the Diaoyu Islands to the death,” and “Even if China is covered with graves, we must kill all Japanese.”

The islands have come to mean much more than the sum of its resources or locale. Like the Falkland Islands that have been under constant dispute between Argentina and Britain for decades, the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands represent the strained history between Japan and China and have also stoked a sense of nationalistic pride in both populations. Japan claims that it has had control of the islands since the 1890s and that the islands were uninhabited at the time. China maintains that the islands have always been a part of the mainland since ancient times.

Unfortunately, this newest incident only reflects a larger, lurking tension between the two nations. Two years ago, the Japanese Coast Guard detained a Chinese fishing vessel that had come into contact with a coast guard ship. China refused to export raw metals to Japan for two months after that incident.

Some of the national tensions reach back to World War II when Japan occupied parts of China. Critics of the recent uprising for control of the islands have suggested that Beijing’s central government is using the issue to divert criticism away from its harsh rule.

Politicians Ignore Americans' Desire to Tackle Climate Change

The discrepancy between Americans who want significant, immediate action to mitigate climate change and the climate change denial machine in Washington, DC continues to develop. And the freakish weather of 2012 isn’t helping. Frustratingly, however, DC would rather close the door completely on facts and on the majority of Americans than address the issue.

In a recent New York Times Green Blog post, 55 percent of polled registered voters said America should do “a great deal” or “quite a bit” about climate change. Based on a study by Yale’s Center on Climate Change Communication and a Stanford University-Washington Post poll conducted in June, the data speak for itself with roughly 77 percent saying climate change was important to them. Note also that the Yale study was conducted in March 2012, prior to the devastating heatwave and drought that continues to impact much of the continental United States.

This is heartening information in an age of overwhelming indifference, but it’s also rather shocking that this data is not made more apparent in mainstream media. Instead, the majority of politicians continue to not touch the subject or outright deny climate change even exists. Is it because climate change is a total downer? Is it too “scientific”? Sure, it’s a large and complex issue that needs addressing on many different levels, but that does not mean we should turn our heads and continue living life as usual as our planet warms to dangerous levels. That’s in nobody’s best interest.

Unfortunately, fossil fuel companies and special interest groups will stop at nothing to be sure climate change not only stays off the political agenda, but remains a “debatable” topic. After all, these corporations have a lot to lose if the world suddenly gutted its existing fossil fuel economy for one based instead on renewables, or even a mixed energy portfolio. If these companies were smart, they’d join progressive, forward-thinking groups and companies investing in solar and wind and other clean energy technologies, yet it appears that money talks and change is apparently difficult, even if it means you’re single-handedly funding and supporting the carbon-intensive industry that’s the source of global climate change.

All this said, it’s hard to know where to turn to get something actually accomplished. Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time, encompassing everything from public health and food security to environmental justice and social welfare. Never mind the countless species that are threatened by our insatiable desire for coal, oil, natural gas and the like. Furthermore, the more dire global weather patterns become, the more humanity is poised for greater natural resource conflict and, possibly, war. Is this a world we want to live in? I personally don’t think so. Still, amazingly, politicians in DC continue to close their eyes and ears and push us on a destructive path of business as usual, when, ironically, it’s anything but. It’s clearly time to represent the people, not the fossil fuel industry.

Obama Warns Syria Over Use of Chemical Weapons

Syria has the world’s fourth-largest supply of chemical weapons, says the New York Times. On Monday, President Barack Obama warned the country that the US would not hesitate to use military force “if there were signs that its arsenal of unconventional weapons was being moved or prepared for use.” Specifically citing “our close allies in the region, including Israel,” he stressed the regional risks should Syria deploy such weapons. Doing so would mean that the Syrian government had crossed a “red line.”

According to the BBC, Syria admitted to having chemical weapons in July. It has insisted that these would only be used in cases of “external aggression” and would “never be used in the Syrian crisis, no matter what the internal developments.” Syria is thought to possess mustard gas and sarin and the CIA believes that it has sought to develop “more toxic and more persistent nerve agents.”

Obama’s statement was his first direct mention of using force against Syria in the 18-month conflict.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is holding talks with China’s top diplomat, State Councillor Dai Bingguo, and a delegation from the Syrian government in Moscow, said that “we need to strictly adhere to the norms of international law and the principles contained in the UN Charter, and not to allow their violation.” Lavrov also said that only the UN Security Council could authorize the use of force against Syria.

The U.S. and Russia, along with China, have been at odds over how to address the uprising in Syria for months. Russia and China have vetoed three UN Security Council resolutions demanding harsher measures against Syria and calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

In Moscow, Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said that foreign military intervention in Syria would be “impossible” because such would pull the conflict beyond the country’s borders. He also said that Obama was issuing “propaganda threats that are linked to the upcoming elections.”

A veteran Japanese war correspondent for Japan Press, Mika Yamamoto, was killed on Monday in Aleppo. Another Japan Press reporter, Kazutaka Sato, said that she was apparently shot by government forces.

Syrian soldiers reportedly led an assault on the western Damascus suburb of Muadhamiya today, in search of rebel fighters; the opposition reports that some 23 people were killed. According to a commander in the Free Syrian Army, Col Abdul Jabbar al-Ukaidi, the rebels now control 60 percent of the city of Aleppo, but government sources in Damascus dispute such a claim.

Friends, this message from David Wilcock is incredible. Don't miss it!

David Wilcock 8-21-12…”OLYMPICS 2012: A Mithraic Illuminati Ritual?”

David has just released this new article. And if you hadn’t figured it out already (from this earlier post, for example) that the 2012 Olympics was a very blatant Illuminati-type ceremony, then maybe David’s newest piece will help.

I’m not saying much here, and just posting a piece, but David has done another outstanding job of investigating and summarizing what went on during the Olympics.

The Cabal is finished. They know it. And this is their last chance to party. Before they maybe wind up in “containment”.

OLYMPICS 2012: A Mithraic Illuminati Ritual?

An increasingly-desperate Cabal of international bankers may have come out of the “cosmic closet” at the 2012 Olympics. The Mithraic / Illuminati ceremonial aspects seem so obvious that even the most hardened skeptics will have to take a second look.

AN INCREDIBLY BLATANT DISPLAY OF SYMBOLISM

Historically speaking, most intelligent, self-respecting people have laughed scornfully at the idea that the world is being run by a highly organized and ruthless cult — practicing a secret religion that is definitely not Christianity.

No one wants to be bothered with nightmares about a bloodthirsty group that is obsessed with ancient mystery-school teachings and may be seeking to kill people — potentially in the billions — to achieve their goals.

However, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics were so blatant that we cannot afford to ignore the occult symbolism that was put on display.

THE MOST-WATCHED TELEVISION EVENT IN US HISTORY

This was also the biggest show on Earth. The 2012 Olympics was the second most-watched event in American TV history — at 210.5 million people.

Aug. 13: Olympics Second Most-Watched Event in US TV History

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2187532/Finally-good-news-NBC-London-Olympics-second-watched-event-U-S-TV-history-tell-difference-Jesse-Eisenberg-Mark-Zuckerberg.html

The 2012 London Olympics were the second most watched event in American TV history, early Nielsen ratings show….

A total of 210.5 million people tuned in to catch the 2012 London Olympics on the first 14 days, across NBCUniversal’s networks that include NBC, NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo and Bravo.

The 2012 viewership surpassed the audience of 209 million who watched the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but lagged behind the 215 million U.S. viewers for the 2008 Beijing Games.

By the time you add in all the people in other countries, proudly following the Olympic Games to see how their athletes performed, the number of viewers could be well over half a billion people.

No other media event on Earth — at least so far — has ever attracted this many viewers. If you wanted to advertise the existence of a vast, secretive, super-wealthy cult to as many people as possible, this would be the best way to do it.

Despite the massive potential for misunderstanding and the obvious scrutiny of every detail, what we saw was an incredibly blatant display of weird, occult symbolism — both before and especially after the Games.

Yes… it does seem like a comic-book storyline, pulled right out of a silly B movie script.

Nonetheless, if people are being hurt, or even killed by this group, then this cult must be exposed — and their influence must be stopped.

THE WEIRD SCULPTURE OUTSIDE THE OLYMPIC STADIUM

Our story begins with a bizarre, enormous sculpture erected directly next to the Olympic Stadium — the ArcelorMittal Orbit.
