Banker Writes Suicide Note, Disappears, Perhaps with $17 Million

Aubrey Lee PriceWe’ve heard the galactics say that it doesn’t matter where people hide. They will be found and restrained. Cindy sends along so many URLs on bankers faking suicide, confessing, or trying to skip town that I have to list her URLs below this story. The banking swindle is coming undone.

Aubrey Lee Price, Missing Georgia Bank Director, Left Behind Confession, Possible Suicide Note

By KATE BRUMBACK, Huff Post, 07/11/12 05:52 PM ET AP

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/11/aubrey-lee-price-missing-confession-suicide-note_n_1664317.html

ATLANTA — After penning a rambling letter to financial regulators and writing notes to his family, a south Georgia bank director boarded a ferry in Key West, Fla., and disappeared.

Now local and federal investigators are trying to determine whether Aubrey Lee Price killed himself, as the lengthy letter – which they’ve described as a confession – would have them believe, or whether he slipped away with $17 million of investors’ money. His family has told authorities they believe he’s dead, but federal investigators aren’t so sure and have offered $20,000 for information leading to his arrest.

“My depression and discouragement have driven me to deep anxiety, fear and shame. I am emotionally overwhelmed and incapable of continuing in this life,” says the confession letter investigators believe was written by Price.

“I created false statements, covered up my losses and deceived and hurt the very people I was trying to help,” the letter says.

Price apologizes at the beginning of the confession for its “lack of structure, grammar and harmony of thought.” Indeed, it wanders from one subject to the next and back again and is sprinkled with grammatical errors and Bible verses. It includes claims that Price is solely responsible for the banking losses; apologies to his clients, associates and partners; claims that banking was never his area of expertise and that he got bad advice; some blame for regulators and other outside forces; repeated mentions of the stress and anxiety he says he has felt for months; and many allusions to his apparent intent to kill himself. The confession also denies that any money was stolen, saying it was all lost through bad investments.

Members of Price’s family and several of his associates mentioned in court documents did not return calls seeking comment. A manager at the bank he directed, which has been purchased by another bank and reopened this week under a different name, said he couldn’t comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

Price left his home in south Georgia on June 16, telling his family he was headed to Guatemala for business, said Sgt. Aaron Pritchett of the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating his disappearance. Two days later, Price’s family received letters saying he was going to Key West to board a ferry headed to Fort Meyers and planned to jump off somewhere along the way to end his life.

Credit card records show he purchased dive weights and a ferry ticket. The ferry ticket was scanned at the boarding point, but that’s where the trail runs cold, Pritchett said.

The Coast Guard searched for him, and investigators talked to the ferry crew and rental car agencies in the Fort Meyers area, to no avail.

Price has said he owns real estate in Venezuela and frequently went there and to Guatemala. Airline records show he had returned to the U.S. from a trip to Venezuela on June 2, according to a statement from an FBI investigator. Price may also own a boat that’s big enough to travel from Florida to Venezuela, the investigator said.

Price became director of Montgomery Bank & Trust in Ailey, Ga., in December 2010, when a company he controlled bought a controlling portion of the bank’s stock, according to a complaint filed late last month in federal court in New York. Price then opened brokerage accounts through a securities clearing and custodial firm in New York and told bank managers he would invest in U.S. Treasury securities.

Instead of investing the bank’s money, authorities say Price wired the funds into accounts he controlled at other financial institutions and provided bank managers with fraudulent documents.

The FBI and federal prosecutors in New York say Price embezzled $17 million in bank funds. The Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a complaint in federal court in Atlanta saying he defrauded investors. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. on Friday said it seized Montgomery Bank & Trust. A federal grand jury in Georgia on Wednesday indicted Price on a bank fraud charge, after prosecutors claimed that his actions led to the depletion of Montgomery Bank & Trust’s cash assets and reserves.

An associate told an SEC lawyer that since 2009, Price had raised roughly $40 million from about 115 investors, mostly in Georgia and Florida, through the sale of membership interests in his investment firm. He routinely sent investors messages saying the firm, for which he made the investment decisions, consistently had positive returns, the SEC lawsuit says. Price provided monthly account statements to investors that were falsified to hide the fact that millions of dollars were missing, his associate told the SEC.

Wendy Cross moved about $300,000 to Price’s firm after a trusted financial adviser told her it would be a good investment. She met Price in person once. She described a very religious, soft-spoken man with a gentle demeanor and an air of kindness.

“He should have won an Oscar for his performance that day,” she said. “He has left a path of financial carnage.”

The 46-year-old from Atlanta said she discovered something was wrong late last month when she wanted to withdraw some money from the firm to invest in another business. She tried multiple times to contact the firm to withdraw money. When she texted her financial adviser, he responded that he had had no idea what was going on at the company and said he thought Price was still alive despite rumors of his suicide.

Cross said she is shocked and devastated by the loss of her savings. She owns a food truck that sells arepas, stuffed cornmeal patties popular in some Latin American countries, but said she will have to sell the truck because she needs the money to live. She can’t afford to hire a lawyer and said she doesn’t know what she’s going to do next.

Price lived with his wife and children in Bradenton, Fla., but bought a home in Valdosta earlier this year, according to authorities. Price had moved his family to the south Georgia city, where his wife’s parents live, just a few weeks before he disappeared. There were financial reasons behind the move, but it also appears Price may have been trying to make things easier on his family once he disappeared, Pritchett said.

Pritchett calls the case interesting and peculiar but wouldn’t speculate on whether Price is still alive.

“Until we have a body, it’s kind of hard to say,” Pritchett said. “It’s almost like a novel.”

“The Largest Protest the World has ever Seen” in Mexico

“The Largest Protest the World has ever Seen” in Mexico

Wayseer News, July 13, 2012

http://wayseernews.com/news/the-largest-protest-the-world-has-ever-seen-in-mexico/172/

Tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets in cities throughout Mexico the day after presidential elections declared Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) candidate, Enrique Peña Nieto, the winner, and yet the news media has been largely quiet. Protesters accuse him of buying votes and paying off television networks for support.

The PRI previously ruled Mexico for seven decades, during which time it was accused of rigging elections, corruption and repression.

Protestors allege that vote-buying, an illegal act in Mexico, is responsible for the 7 percentage point win for the PRI.

“The PRI threatens many people and buys others with a couple of tacos,” said Manuel Ocegueda, a 43-year-old shop worker participating in the march.

Much of the criticism is being aimed at Mexican media giants Televisa and TV Azteca who have been largely quiet about the protests. Accusations that the media has been bought off by the PRI are supported by U.S. State Department documents, leaked by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and released by WikiLeaks. The contents of the documents include concerns that Peña Nieto paid for favorable media coverage as far back as 2009.

In the meantime, Mexican citizens continue to raise their voices, refusing to be silent. Twitter is full of tweets using the hashtags #YoSoy132 and #MegaMarcha. Protestors carry signs in English, Japanese, German and other languages in hopes of attracting media attention around the world.

“The elections, in my opinion, were a very well planned ‘circus’, just a show,” said Maricela J. Becerra, “There is a meme going around online that says “No me pidas que respete los resultados de un proceso que no respetaste” [Don't ask me to respect the results of a process that you didn't respect] and I think that phrase pretty much sums up the sentimiento of the people marching…My hope for Mexico is that one day we will have a real and clean democracy …and more importantly, my hope is that my compatriotas mexicanos continue to speak up, que no se conformen! Many people say that Mexicans do not care, that we are used to living in a corrupt country… it’s time we get the control of our country back, it’s time the government works for everyone and not just those with money.”

Bloodiest Massacre Yet in Syria, Say Opposition Activists

Syrian opposition activists are reporting that more than 200 residents of the village of Tremseh near Hama were massacred on Thursday in an attack by helicopter gunships, tanks and militiamen who carried out execution-style killings. If confirmed, this would be the worst atrocity in the 16-month uprising.

The BBC’s Jim Muir says that the reports have “yet to be documented by activists with the kind of gruesome images of dead women and children that shocked the world after the killings at Houla two months ago.” Videos posted on the internet have shown about 20 bodies, all of young men, said to have been killed in Tremseh. The United Nations’ monitoring mission in Syria has confirmed the use of heavy weapons including helicopters and tanks in the village and Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Al Jazeera that the bodies of 30 people have been identified so far.

The reports of the massacre coincided with the UN discussing whether to renew the observer mission, which has not led to any cessation of violence. Western powers have also been demanding that harsher sanctions be levied against Syria under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which calls for punitive measures “against regimes considered a threat to the peace, including economic sanctions and military intervention.”

Special UN envoy Kofi Annan has said he is “shocked and appalled” at the reports of the massacre and that the Syrian government has violated his six-point peace plan. The Syrian government has blamed the killings on “terrorists,” as it has throughout the months of the uprising.

On Monday, Annan and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are to meet to discuss the crisis. Russia has stood staunchly behind Syria and vetoed earlier United Nations Security Council efforts to pass resolutions with harsher consequences on Syria if the violence continues. According to the New York Times, a Russian cargo ship, the Alaed, that was found to be carrying military helicopters and air-defense equipment to the Syria government and forced to turn back in Scotland earlier this year, is again on the move. The ship is said to be heading south off the northern coast of Norway.

While it is impossible to verify information, over 16,000 people have been killed since popular protests against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad began in March of 2011.

IKEA Accused of Logging Old-Growth Forests

A wholly-owned subsidiary of home furnishings giant IKEA has been accused of destroying rapidly-dwindling old growth forests in Russia. The NGO Protect the Forest accuses IKEA’s Swedwood of clear cutting and logging old-growth trees in the region of Karelia in northern Russia. IKEA claims that it is operating within the standards set by third party certifier Forest Stewardship Council. Unfortunately, it seems that the Russian standards for FSC certification do not ban logging in old-growth areas.

Certification Not Enough to Protect

“Swedish forests are already impoverished, and now the same thing is happening with the valuable forests in Russian Karelia,” stated Protect the Forest board member Linda Ellegaard Nordström. “The same environmental certification system is used in both Sweden and Russia: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This is a disaster for the forest both here in Sweden and in Russia. The company NEPCon, which certifies that Swedwood’s forestry is compliant with FSC standards, allows the logging of trees which are 200-600 years old.”

IKEA has clearly stated its sustainable forestry commitments: “The IKEA Group participates in a number of forestry projects with external organizations in order to contribute to the development of responsible forestry practices and policies in countries where we work. The IKEA Group’s forestry projects focus on responsible management practices, building capacity for third party certification, combating illegal logging and forestry research and education.”

This video from Al Jazeera English shows centuries-old trees that were “cleared” from forests.

The video demonstrates the disagreement on the definitions of old-growth and high value conservation forest, and this allows Swedwood to remain within the letter of the law.

IKEA’s Good, But Could Be Better

IKEA is by no means the worst offender with these activities – illegal logging on a huge scale is going on all over the world, and the Swedish company has made many advances that its competitors have not matched, including working with global NGOs like WWF and Rainforest Alliance. These examples of corporate social responsibility may indicate that drawing attention to this situation via public pressure (such as this petition) will lead the furniture giant to go beyond compliance and do the right thing in Karelia.

IKEA has a good record in several areas of environmental stewardship; for example, over half its energy is derived from renewable sources, and the IKEA Foundation is active in combatting child labor in India. The company’s own website confirms that they have a ways to go in terms of sustainable logging: “The share of FSC certified solid wood in the IKEA range increased to 16.2% in FY11, up from 15.8% in the previous year.”

Their 2011 annual summary on sustainability efforts concludes: “We will continue to strengthen our sustainability direction and keep it at the heart of our business. We can have a positive impact on people and the planet. What could be more important?” We agree.

Take Action
Sign the petition asking IKEA to desist from logging old growth forest, in alignment with their stated values.

Yet more damage to the ecosystem

Oil Sands Kicking Caribou Out Of Their Habitat

The Boreal forest is very important in the world’s ecosystem. The forest stretches over 3,000 miles and is home to trees and wetlands that moderate our climate and purify the world’s air. According to the Canadian Boreal Initiative, it is one of the world’s largest intact forest ecosystems. It is the home of thousands of species of animal and insects, but one may be losing its habitat — the caribou.

The caribou or reindeer has already seen subspecies go extinct.

A memo was sent to Canada’s environment minister Peter Kent telling him that there is an elevated risk of the caribou disappearing after losing its home in the regions of the Boreal that surrounds oil sands developments in Alberta. Developers were meant to restore the habitat but the memo, signed by a deputy minister in the department, indicates that it could take decades to restore the area. By the time it happens, seven different types of caribou may have disappeared completely.

The Postmedia report indicates that the memo was sent to Kent as part of preparations for a lawsuit begun by environmental groups who claimed that the government was not enforcing the Species at Risk Act. Since the suit began in 2011, the government introduced Bill C-38 which further cut protection programs.

The memo, which was found through Access to Information, indicates that Kent opted to ignore indications that the Alberta caribou were at risk since there was no national-scale danger of extinction.

The big question is, if the caribou is losing its home in Alberta’s Boreal, then what will be next? The federal government is said to be reviewing the Species at Risk Act in an effort to strengthen it, but their environmental record does not leave a lot of room for optimism.
