BP Loses Bid to Suspend Gulf of Mexico Compensation Payouts

BP has lost its bid to suspend payments to people and businesses claiming damages related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill while an investigator looks into possible misconduct in the payout process.

The British oil giant struck a deal to pay damages to victims of the oil spill after the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded in 2010, killing 11 men and wreaking billions of dollars worth of damage to fishing and tourism businesses along the Louisiana coastline.

However, the deal opened the floodgates to 10,000 compensation claims a month, costing BP far more than the $7.8bn (£5.2bn) it had expected and leaving the oil major with a battle on its hands to try to limit the number of purported victims coming forward.

BP has no control over its payments to claimants, having agreed to a compensation formula and framework in a legal settlement covering certain personal and business liabilities.

The company’s open chequebook has spawned an industry of lawyers trawling for businesses and individuals to demand compensation, who are “coming forward in ever increasing numbers”, even though they “suffered no losses”, BP claims.

The oil company argues that the team responsible for awarding the payouts is ignoring the accepted legal meanings of words in the agreement, and that two of the lawyers working for the fund appeared to be taking kickbacks from at least one of the law-firms filing requests for compensation.

According to redacted evidence filed in court this week, one of the lawyers had repeatedly emailed requests for payment to at least one of the law firms representing alleged victims of the oil spill. BP had asked for all compensation payouts to be suspended while the matter was investigated by Louis Freeh, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, on Friday it had its request refused.

Judge Carl Barbier, who is presiding over the case in a New Orleans court, said that the number of checks and balances involved in awarding compensation would have made it difficult for any one person to make corrupt payments. “We would have to imagine some grand conspiracy over there involving dozens of people,” he said.

He said there was no evidence that the “mass of claims” were not being properly evaluated. “BP has not produced any evidence that would warrant the court taking the drastic step of shutting down the entire claims program,” Barbier said.

The trial under Barbier to determine blame and overall damages from the Gulf spill is ongoing, while a US appeals court is hearing a separate case brought by BP about the way payouts are being made for business economic losses.

Catholic youths converge on Rio to see "slum pope"

A girl waves an Argentine flag inside the Buenos Aires' Cathedral before boarding a bus bound for Rio de Janeiro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Friday, July 19, 2013. Hundreds of Argentine faithful will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend World Youth Day events from July 22-28 with Pope Francis. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Thousands of young Roman Catholics from around the Americas are converging on Rio de Janeiro, taking dayslong bus trips or expensive plane flights that were paid for by baking cookies and holding garage sales, running raffles and bingo tournaments and even begging for coins in public plazas.

Some of the poorest traveled from so-called "misery villages" in Argentina's capital, thanks to donations from the Buenos Aires archdiocese. Their agenda at World Youth Day includes meeting with other disadvantaged youngsters in Manguinhos, a favela Pope Francis plans to visit, and sharing stories about Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the subway-riding Argentine Jesuit they now affectionately call their "slum pope."

Road trips can be fun, but many have been expressing more profound emotions, excited by the changes they see in the church since Francis was elected in March. His first months as pope have already renewed their faith, many say, by showing how church leaders can get closer to their people and relate to their real-world problems with humor and a common touch.

"Like anyone else, there have been times when I haven't had this faith at 100 percent. Now I have more faith than ever, very high. I have my heart completely with God and no one can take me away from there," said Valentina Godoy, who traveled from Santiago, Chile, and shared her feelings from Brazil on a video her local church group posted on YouTube.

Francis joked when he first emerged on the balcony over St. Peters Square that the cardinals had chosen a pope "from the end of the world." But for many Catholics on this side of the Atlantic, he's not only the first Latin American pope. With his history of community outreach, many younger Catholics are saying that he's the first pope they can relate to in a more personal way.

"We were concerned after Benedict resigned, but when a Latin American pope emerged, so close to young people, it really changed the situation and our numbers grew. A little while ago we thought that there would be 5,000 Chileans and now we see that 9,100 of us are going, more than double what we expected," said Alonso Molina, the 21-year-old coordinator of a group visiting from Chile's Vicarate of Youthful Hope.

Brazil has more Catholics than any other country in the world and its church has struggled to compete with Latin America's vigorous evangelical Christian movements, so it's a logical destination. And while many Argentines were disappointed that Francis didn't choose his native Argentina for his first papal trip outside Italy, they were making the best of it: More than 30,000 Argentines were making the pilgrimage, the largest foreign delegation.

That includes President Cristina Fernandez, who cast aside her political rivalry with the former Buenos Aires cardinal after he became pope, and plans to make more displays of affection next week. While Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff invited South American leaders to the final Mass on July 29, Fernandez also plans to attend Monday's opening ceremony, Argentina's Catholic News Agency reported.

Hundreds of young Catholics left Buenos Aires cathedral Friday night in a caravan of buses on the 40-hour, 1,500-mile (2,500-kilometer) trip to Rio. Many others left earlier from provinces around Argentina. About 9,500 signed up from the United States; 5,000 from Paraguay and 4,500 from Mexico.

In all, 350,000 young Catholics signed up, similar to previous World Youth Days that later attracted much larger crowds. In any case, Brazilian authorities prepared to receive a million or more visitors during the pope's weeklong stay.

Many Argentines had already planned to attend last year, "but everything got bigger after March 13, with the boom that was generated by the news that the Pope is from our land and our city," said the Rev. Marcelo Miceli, trip coordinator for the Buenos Aires archdiocese.

The diocese channeled contributions and was able to subsidize all-inclusive trips for $500 a person, Miceli said. "We've received a lot of help from the community, many donations. It has generated an incredible wave of solidarity."

But despite months of lobbying by the Vatican's top diplomat in Argentina, Emil Paul Tscherrig, the church got no reprieve from Argentina's tax agency, AFIP, which refused to loosen currency controls so that pilgrims might be able to trade their devaluing pesos for Brazilian reals at favorable official exchange rates.

Pilgrims wanting to buy Brazilian currency in Argentina were forced to turn to illegal traders, getting about half as much money in return for their pesos. Those wealthy enough to have credit cards can use those in Brazil, and later pay a 20 percent penalty to the Argentine government for each purchase.

AFIP's press office refused to comment on the controversy, which prompted an official public complaint from the church: "We made many appeals to various government agencies, but we have not received official responses about the possibility of changing money," the statement said.

Paraguay doesn't limit currency trading, but poverty is a grim reality for many members of the Catholic church in that country.

"To put together the money necessary for the trip and our stay, since we're so poor, we had to ask for help from others and organize food fairs, selling noodles with chicken sauce, hamburgers, sodas and other fast food," said Ismael Diaz, who organized a group of 300 young people traveling from the Virgin of Rosario parish in the city of Luque.

Chilean youths told similar stories of bake sales, raffles and shaking cans in the streets to raise money for the trip.

"It's something I have always wanted to do. It's important for any young Catholic person to attend and to reconfirm their faith," Ezequiel Sanchez, a 28-year-old small business owner, said before he and 18 others from his church boarded their flight from Mexico City.

The Galactic Federation of Light via Blossom Goodchild: July 21, 2013

The Galactic Federation of Light channeled by Blossom Goodchild: July 21, 2013 – http://www.blossomgoodchild.com/index.html?page=BG185july21.html

Blossom: Hello … again. Yesterday we tried did we not? Yet the minute you wished me Happy Human Day, I dissolved into tears. Yesterday I was not a very happy human … today I am. So may we try again?

Galactic Federation of Light: That is most suitable for us. Our willingness to serve is as great as many of you upon the Earth plane. We would care to address a particular matter. It has been said throughout these times that ‘channelled messages’ are ‘going out of fashion.’

From our point of view we would like to make it quite clear that we have no intention of ‘Leaving one in the lurch’. We have come to assist you in all ways that we possibly can … to bring about this Golden Age. This was an agreement between us all. Why would we suddenly decide not to continue?

I am pleased to hear that … yet it has been said that we should ‘go it alone’ and that we must ‘come from within’ and therefore would not need your help or advice.

This is perfectly correct for those who FEEL they have reached the advanced stages of their awakening.WE ARE NOT NECESSARY … YET …

We are available to offer our wisdom … for we consider it to be more advanced in many areas than that of the spiritual soulself that is incarcerated within the human density and all its programming’s.

WE DO NOT IMPOSE.

WE DO NOT INTERFERE.

We merely offer suggestions of ways to uplift. We also encourage one to seek and find the TRUTH of who they are.

May we conclude on this matter that there is no law … there is no pressure from us as to whether or not our words … brought though you Blossom … MUST be read. It is entirely up to the individual as to whether or not they FEEL they are of assistance to their expansion of self. If they feel they are not … with GRACE we say … stay away from that which we say. If you find however that they offer solace and peace of mind … then we thank you for the time taken to walk this journey alongside us.

For as long as you are willing Blossom … we shall continue to work with you … for we consider that in this way we can be of service and benefit the whole .

Thanks for that. So on that subject … there is something I would like to clear up. As you are aware … many write in asking me to ask you questions. We have done this for a while … on and off. It is not that I am opposed to doing so and I understand that many have the need for answers. However … I have always wondered why I am a little uncomfortable in doing so. I wondered if I was a little unsure about asking things of which I had no idea about … and then I simply have to TRUST … and I have done so many times. However today … pondering on this whole ‘channelling thing’ with you … it came to me … that this is not why you are here. You are not here to answer questions about certain things. It came to me so clearly. This is not your role. This is why you have steered away from certain subjects … because in TRUTH … who knows what may happen. Life changes course all the time … depending on each thought. Am I right? If so … can you elaborate … because then I feel we can ‘begin afresh’ … which I am feeling we are perhaps in need of.

Blossom Goodchild …

Gulp! … Yes? …

Let us for a moment consider certain things. We do not live next door to you .We do not live in the same country or indeed on the other side of the world. We do not even live IN your world. So let us consider that which we are undertaking regarding our mission with you. To ‘reach you’ or anyone … telepathically … is more complicated than reaching ‘our own kind’ so to speak. Your make up is different from ours to begin with … Therefore … when you consider that which we are able to achieve from a connection point of view … do you not think … considering we come from other … … … …

Other what?

‘Spaces’ … that what we do bring through … between us, we are doing remarkably well.

Bit by bit we learn from each other as to what is the most appropriate approach to offer at any given time … and of course it will depend on your own disposition as to how easy a communication may or may not be.

Yes … I am aware of that. Yet sometimes even when not in the highest of moods I want to get a channelling done because it suits me from my ‘diary’ point of view.

That which we choose to bring forth from a knowledgeable aspect … is a delicate matter. So yes indeed we would say that this is what you have been picking up on. Much of what is asked by our friends of Earth is either not to be known ahead of its time … or … is to be studied by those interested. They can in turn … tune into a higher regard on any matter … should that be their passion.

ONE SUBJECT WE KNOW INTERESTS ALL …

IS LOVE … OF COURSE.

Of course. Some that read these words are bored with what we say … We smile in LOVE. Never … from a position in which We come from … can we be bored of the subject of LOVE.

May we with all respect also say … that it is often the ones who think they have ‘Got it’ … that haven’t?

THE TRUE FACT IS … that which is to inevitably unfold in YOUR UNIVERSE shall do so at the pace in which more and more within that Universe … understand of the subject of LOVE.

Oh yes … many many times have we touched upon this … Many times have we gone into deeper levels of this … Because DO YOU NOT SEE FRIENDS OF EARTH? … IT IS THROUGH THIS THAT ALL YOUR ANSWERS COME.

IT IS THROUGH LOVE THAT ‘YOU’ CHANGE IT ALL.

We CANNOT answer many questions because you hold the answers … which are dependent upon your own self-discovery of LOVE!

Over and over again we CHOOSE to talk about it … Because that is all there is. That is all there is to talk about. For there is nothing else in existence other than LOVE.

How many of you TRULY GET THAT? Not many!

YET!

For if there were many that did … do you see? They would not have the need to have answers to all these questions … that in TRUTH … if we may be bold in saying … DO NOT MATTER!

NOTHING MATTERS other than BEING LOVE.

IF YOU REALLY GOT THAT … there simply would be no need to KNOW anything more.

DO YOU SEE? DO YOU SEE?

I FEEL what you are saying … yet I also feel your frustration of trying to get it through via words. When you say ‘nothing else matters’ … surely it does. I mean … it does matter if Planet X for instance is going to smash in to Earth … many ask about that … surely THAT matters … surely THAT is important to know?

Why? If you knew it was to happen … what would you do other than live in fear of the day when it takes place? If you knew it wasn’t going to happen you could relax on that matter … yet with all respect you … many of you … would find something else to consider regarding the end of your civilisation as you know it.

Do you see?

I’m trying. I am surprised at how many times you are saying ‘Do you see’. My fingers are typing so quickly and forcefully …

If you KNEW what was to happen in any given moment of your future … you would change the future simply because of that KNOWNG … Therefore the future would not be the future as planned.

Yet is it planned? Are we not creating it?

OUR POINT!!!

YOU HAVE CREATED IT. It is a little like a ‘scribble pattern’ … The outline is there … you just have to fill in the colours!

This is so interesting … yet again … words are stumping the conversation.

May we assist … in that … there are many scribble patterns … many many many many many!

There is NO END to possibilities of outcomes on many many many many levels of just one thing.

You may consider that one situation has one outcome … on the level that you are aware of. NO … One situation has many many many many outcomes on many different levels. Ripples on an ocean … infinite … unending … glorious … mystifying … incredible … possibilities of outcomes … on and on and on and on!

You are just experiencing one version of it … in one given time. Yet who is to say … that another aspect of you is perhaps experiencing a different version of that SAME outcome.

May I suggest this is a little out of my league … and yet I accept what you are saying … because I KNOW another aspect of me understands it!

OUR MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO YOU is not about when disclosure may or may not take place. It is not about the date upon which we reveal ourselves for ALL to witness.

It is not about any of these things …

OUR MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO YOU IS:

TO BE HAPPY EVERY MOMENT OF YOUR LIVING EXPERIENCE ON EARTH.

Yes … I know this … many of us know this. And it is probably possible if one lived on a remote island with no programming or poisoning taking place. Please hear this in the right way … but you often ask us if “WE GET IT’? … Sometimes I wonder if ‘YOU GET IT’? … Do you really GET what it is we are dealing with down here? … Because I PROMISE you … as much as we KNOW on a deep level all that you say is TRUTH regarding BEING LOVE and BENG HAPPY … it doesn’t work that way for us … all the time. Sure we have moments of absolute joy and are in awe of being alive and living in this time … but I have not yet met one Earthly soul that can sustain that feeling … and that is what you are telling us is what we are here to do. It is so difficult with all the opposition we are faced with.

And that is why dearest souls of Earth … ‘YOU’ WERE CHOSEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU!

YOU … The ones that KNOW in your hearts that we are with you .

YOU … The ones that carry on fighting the good fight when friends and family think you are loco

YOU … Who volunteered and KNEW what you were in for …

YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU!

YOU KNEW THIS IS HOW IT WOULD BE …

YET … WE KNEW …

THAT EACH ONE OF YOU THAT WAS CHOSEN HAD THE STRENGTH TO SEE THIS THROUGH NO MATTER WHAT.

INSIDE IF YOU … YOUR TRUTH KNOWS THE TRUTH!

REGAIN YOUR STRENGTH.

RECALL YOUR MISSION.

My mission then is to be happy at every moment?

Not an easy task you are telling us.

RETRAIN YOUR MIND.

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR PROGRAMMING.

THE MORE YOU REALISE HOW EASY IT IS … THE QUICKER IT TAKES PLACE.

THE PROBLEM BEING THAT YOUR PROGRAMMING IS PROGRAMMED TO TELL YOU IT IS HARD!!!

When you meditate or prepare for sleep … Ask for recall. Ask for remembrance. Ask for the ‘wrong’ programme to be removed …

If you do not like a particular programme on your TV sets … you switch channels to something that you find more agreeable.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING ….. CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

Dearest friends … Dearest Blossom … YOU have served whole heartedly … even when you FEEL otherwise.

Many question our existence … those of you who KNOW US … cannot question it … for it is KNOWN in the depth of the soul as TRUTH.

ONE DAY … one most beautiful day … and from that day forth … ALL … WILL KNOW US IN THE WAY THAT YOU DO NOW.

We shall unite in harmony and peace and your days on Earth … as you know it to be now … shall be so very much more pleasurable … beyond measure … from that which you are accustomed to

THERE SHALL BE NO PROGRAMMNG.

THERE SHALL BE NO MORE ‘MONITORING’ …

THERE SHALL BE NO MORE CONTROL BY OTHERS … ONLY BY THE SELF.

WE LOVE YOU …

Phew … Thanks Guys … I really needed to FEEL that energy from you today . It was really strong and powerful … which in turn … is so EMPOWERING. Again … Many Thanks … Roger … Over and out.

Restoring Paradise on Nicaragua’s Island of Ometepe

This is a guest post from WhyHunger’s Senior Director of Programs, Alison Cohen

It’s the apex of the dry season on the Isla de Ometepe – a land mass of approximately 165 square miles which rises majestically out of Lake Nicaragua, not too far from the border with Costa Rica. Until recently Ometepe was one of Nicaragua’s best kept secrets – an island paradise as prophesied, according to some historians, by indigenous tribes who traveled from the north to this Eden-like utopia that came to them in a vision.

But despite the fact that tourists from around the world have begun to make the 4-hour trek from Managua to sun on the sea-like shores of Lake Nicaragua and climb through the cloud forests to the rim of the island’s active volcanos, Ometepe is suffering economically and ecologically – no longer the prophesied paradise marked by insatiable abundance.

It is a month or more before the rainy season will bring with it renewed hope marked by an increasing greenness and fullness along the hillsides. For now, food insecurity is at its highest. The fields are dry and barren, stored staples of rice and sorghum are dwindling and fruit trees have just begun to let loose some of their bounty.

Nicaragua, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is the second poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean after Haiti, and a country in which poverty is above all a rural phenomenon; two out of three people in the country-side live on less than one dollar a day.

Short-sighted, chemical-intensive agricultural practices coupled with climate change have devastated the agricultural sustainability of the island. What was once a lush and diverse tropical forest has been mostly clear cut for single-crop farming.

Now, rice and sorghum are planted on small plots up a hillside, with no attempt at working within the natural contours of the land to create a terraced hillside and the large rocks that were strewn throughout the fields since the last volcanic eruption.

Soil erosion – up to 2 inches per year – is commonplace, and last year’s drought led many farmers to abandon harvest when there was so little to show for their work. Even during the rainy season, farmers are no longer providing the fresh, nourishing meals they once were.

Project Bona Fide, a partner in WhyHunger’s Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign with Yoko Ono Lennon and Hard Rock International, stands out on this small island of 42,000 people as one grassroots effort blazing a trail to a new vision of paradise on Isla de Ometepe. A 10-year old organization and 43-acre educational farm, Finca Bona Fide, was founded in the island community of Balgue by an edible landscaper from the United States with the long-term goal of “reintroducing biodiversity to support rebuilding ecologies and economies that first feed and nurture the communities growing them.”

Project Bona Fide’s ultimate vision is to contribute to the community’s and region’s food sovereignty, or the right of the Nicaraguan people to define their own food, agriculture, livestock and fisheries systems and to not have to rely on the imports and exports derived from international market forces. The goal is to work with farmers through an apprenticeship program — complete with hands on training, on-going support and a form of “farmer insurance” — to establish more diversified farms, or “food forests,” on their own plots of land rooted in the principles of agroecology and its promise of resilience.

Project Bonafide demonstrates the possible. Chris Shanks, one of Project Bona Fide’s co-directors, uses permaculture as an adaptive and agro-ecological approach to ending hunger. In the simplest terms, permaculture is the design of agricultural ecosystems that examine and follow nature’s patterns. Chris believes, permaculture involves farming in the “fourth dimension of time” — that is, choosing crops and a pattern of planting them based on their capacity for long-term resilience in the face of climate change. One of the key functions of Project Bona Fide, according to Chris, is “to hold these methods of resiliency in trust,” while learning, training and spreading the crops throughout the community.

Project Bona Fide is implementing and providing training in a variety of very specific food-producing methods that address issues of long-term food insecurity with strong economic potential. These issues include: alley cropping; grey water use and water management (“slow it,” “store it,” “spread it”); bio-char soil amendment; agro-forestry (combining fruit trees with field crops); integrating livestock such as chickens and pigs; and the concept of the “guild,” or a grouping of plants, animals, insects and other natural components that work together to help ensure their survival.

The 43 acres that makes up the farm are sustained primarily by young volunteers who arrive from every corner of the world, often with little more than a curiosity in permaculture or agroforestry and sometimes with a specific skill such as carpentry, welding, animal husbandry, cooking or organizing. There are no paid international staff, though it is one of the largest employers on the island. The directors do not draw a salary. They use the income from their consulting projects outside of the country and some grants and donations, to support the farm’s infrastructural needs, pay local staff and maintain a very simple lifestyle. In all, Project Bona Fide employs 30 people from the local community who bring existing skills, cultivate new capacities and educate those who come to learn. Teachers are learners; learners are teachers.

In addition to employing, learning from and educating local community members, Project Bona Fide collaborates on projects that take place off-farm and in the community. In part with funds from the Imagine There’s No Hunger Campaign, Project Bona Fide has partnered with families in the community to establish Mano Amiga and Café Infantil, a community center and a child nutrition program, respectively. Mano Amiga is a beautiful natural building in the center of Balgue and houses a library and a women’s sewing cooperative in addition to a permaculture garden and playground. Café Infantil uses a building adjacent to Mano Amiga that has a kitchen where breakfast is prepared by mothers in the community for up to 70 children a day under the age of 12, most of whom live in families without fathers, generally equated in this strongly machismo society with persistent poverty and malnutrition.
