Humanity Healing: Ascension Symptoms: Body and Mind

Karns

Credit: in5d.com

The following is part of a series on ascension symptoms extracted from aPDF by Humanity Healing and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.

DRINKING HABITS

The quantity of water that you drink will also be extremely important to you during transformation. The water we drink allows the electrum to flow through your body, which is light lowered to a density as it enters the body mass. The more water you drink, the easier it is for the light energy (prana) to enter your body and to move through the physical body, rejuvenating the organs of the body. It would be wise during cellular transformation to drink plenty of water (at least a gallon a day).

The additional water allows the light to move through the body faster. Light is an electrical force in our density and the additional water assists the movement of the light. From your perspective, you cleanse your body with additional fluids. The additional water permits the light (prana) to move through your body as the prana brings new life into and through the body. In order for the mutationprocess to be as comfortable as possible, you will need to keep your intake of water up. If you do not, your body will attempt to retain fluid in order to ensure that the element flow within your system is maintained.

Why is this important? It is because, during the mutation process, you are constantly sloughing off whole string or sequences of proteins. Full systems are being discarded and rebuilt with differently structured compounds which you are receiving through water, air and foods that are also undergoing electromagnetic reformatting. In other words, you would find fairly high levels of excreted proteins in suchAscension Symptoms: Mind and Body | in5d.combody fluids as urine. You are literally washing away your old body formatting and rebuilding it as you live and breathe and move within.

It is quite helpful for people to go into a diet that contains more water, not only water in its pure form, but through the fruits and vegetables as well. This creates a greater lightness in the body and helps the body to reorganize its electrical structure. It is really quite simple, if you think of it, it is more of a movement away from the density and complexities of what you have termed your modern world and moving into a greater state of purity through which you may receive the grace of this transformation.

ENERGY FLOW in the BODY

During cellular transformation in your body, there will be increased energy flow felt mainly in the parasympathetic system of the body (i.e. lower limbs, legs, junctions along the spinal column, and especially the ganglia where the lower lumbar are positioned) and in the shoulders. Electrical sensations will move up and down the limbs of the body. Some people will also experience sweats and migraine headaches. You will notice increased energies when manifesting a thought. It is good to be cautious with these energies and your thoughts because they will become magnified during the time of transition during cellular transformation.

EXERCISE HABITS

We have mentioned the importance of drinking lots of water duringcellular transformation. It is also important to do more physical exercises (i.e. walking, jogging, running, hiking, swimming) which will be extremely supportive during the changes. The exercise from dancing also is particularly powerful because many energetic pathways can be cut short and integrated throughout the body with the movement involved in dancing.

Ascension Symptoms: Mind and Body | in5d.comEYES

The white portion of the eyes may gradually change color, may become bloodshot and may become slightly darker. In some cases, this may create a slight tinge of rosiness in the eyes or a slight tinge of brown or green, but in most cases the color will be rosiness. This change relates to the increased velocity of blood near the surface of the eyes that can be viewed. The visual field of the eyes will alter and you will begin to view dimensions differently as your physical sight is adjusted as it interacts with the opening of the third inner eye, between your present outer eye positions.

FINGERNAILS

More ridges may appear in the fingernails at the smooth light half– moon line at the base of the fingernail. This part of the fingernail may begin to vary and may become rippled.

HAIR

A change in the hair may occur where the hair is on the body and in the thickness of the hair which will gradually become thicker over several years. This change will be sufficient so that it will be measurable.

HEAD

As you begin to reformat, things have broken loose, pieces coming out of the tissues in your bodies. In your heads, in your skulls, those who are mutating and even those who are considering preparing Ascension Symptoms: Mind and Body | in5d.comfor this, there are many mineral structures that are being sloughed off into the cerebrospinal fluid. This material moves into the spinal column, through the nerves and out into the tissue, so that if you recycle this discarded material, you will become very uncomfortable. There may be disturbance sensations within the head, eyes, spine and nerves (i.e. dizziness, headaches, pressures in the head (usually from back to front and may also be from side to side).

Also see: Metaphysical Explanations Of Specific Physical Aches, Pains And Sicknesses

The primary place where mutation occurs is in the DNA of the brain. What this means is that certain brain functions are going to be a bit difficult. Your vision will be affected; you’re most certainly going to be affected in terms of headaches; to some extent your hearing will be altered; and, most of all, your ability to feel that you have a sharp focus all time will be affected. Your heads are literally beginning to contain material that is capable of electrically short-circuiting. If you have a sense that you are losing your mental clarity, that certain things are happening in your head, including headaches, that make you feel that you have short circuits within your brain, that is due to the sloughing off of this material.

Mood swings are also symptomatic of the body’s attempts to integrate more Light. There may be moments when you feel wonderful and have a great deal of energy, followed by a sudden crash and depression as you experience the pull of the old world.

HEARING

The auditory range of the ears will expand so that you will be able to hear the presently inaudible sounds of Source’s creation within you and which surrounds you. This change will enable you to have faith in Creator from hearing the sounds in your ears. Ringing or tones in the ears can also be transmissions from spiritual entities from other dimensions. Information from these sources makes itself known to you at the appropriate time in your particular spiritual walk.

HEART

Heart palpitations may be felt at times as your heart becomes insynchronization with the rhythm of the Earth’s heartbeat. Changes may also be experienced in the heart muscle tissue and striations in theAscension Symptoms: Mind and Body | in5d.comheart muscle tissue will begin to show more variations. The tissue will seem to be spreading out as the heart muscle becomes denser. This change will allow the heart to last longer and to create a normal life span of 150 years for an individual. The normal pulse rate will increase about three to four beats over the next ten to twelve years.

You may see a greater constriction around the heart as many people react to the energy of love and light that is coming in greater magnification. More heart attacks or various illnesses will occur where there is restrictive flow of energy around the heart center. This can be avoided with a greater awareness of that energy and a greater openness to the emotions, letting go, not having so much of the emotions held into the body but finding ways for the emotions to be harmonically experienced. The emotions are to be felt, not denied and the emotions can then create more of a flow and less of a closing of the life force.

HOT AND COLD FLASHES

These will be felt more by many people as cellular transformation occurs in the body. It is like your engines are being rebuilt and the temperature gauge is being replaced. It is similar to an engine in a car and this temperature gauge, as it is in an engine, is outdated. So in a way, you are finding that as you are building new information into the body, into the cells, you are redesigning the different aspects of the physical body through this transformation. So as this is happening, there is a greater gap in what is being experienced, a greater experience up and down, a greater experience of upheaval. Much is being tossed around, much that is no longer working and that is outdated. It is being tossed out as new data and new equipment is being gradually introduced and built into the body.

Related: Physical Pains And Their Metaphysical Meanings

This is happening for all beings, whether they are conscious or not. That those who are choosing not to stay on the planet, although they may not be conscious of their choice at all, have decided not to undergo this level of acceleration and change in the body. Those who are choosing to be here at this time during this rapid acceleration and shifting of the physical body, of the physical mind and of the emotional system, are going to make those choices either consciously for many and unconsciously for many. But all will definitely be affected by the energies. All will experience, on some level, a shifting in the body as the body moves naturally to a higher level of receptivity and alignment with its source.

MEMORY CHANGES

More people are now able to tune their consciousness to receive unseen forces or wavelengths from the universe and to use this new consciousness to transform themselves into a new way of being. Ascension Symptoms: Mind and Body | in5d.comThis new incoming impulses of energy is affecting the cells that compose the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. People are manifesting, on every level, this incoming light with your whole being. There will be times when you will be inspired with flashing memories, recall of past situations and lives and other realizations. Insights that are eternal and cosmic are beginning to infiltrate your body and to illuminate the human mind in a way that inner body cells will activate. The mental capacity of people will increase considerably during cellular transformation.

You may find yourself in the middle of a sentence when suddenly you completely forget what you were going to say next. You may be thinking about something that happened when you have difficulty accessing the memory of the event. As you move into a state of grace during cellular transformation, the harder it will be to reference your past through your memory system. All useless data is being taken from your memory files. In mastering limitation, past referencing of data was useful because of your acceptance as reality based on your beliefs and prior experiences. Referencing of data from the past is falling away and people will not have to keep the memory alive.

MENSTRUAL CRAMPS

Women may notice a lightening of blood flow during menstruation with less flow and less cramping. Some pregnant women will have easier and shorter childbirth with less pain and labor.

More on Finding Our Creative Purpose

Credit: Lifehack.org

By Wes Annac, The Culture of Awareness

It’s no secret that we’re in a time of transition, and some of us have been asking ourselves how we want to contribute to our spiritual revolution.

We’re being led to creative outlets that are intended to enhance the light we give to the conscious community, and as we open up to our higher consciousness and let our creative side flow, we’re given all kinds of opportunities to share our work with the world.

The only struggle for some of us is in deciding, once and for all, how we want to contribute. There are plenty of ways we can creatively express ourselves, and we’re reaching a point where we need to figure out just what we want our role to be.

Our creativity is ours to use how we please, and we’re the only ones who can decide what creative route we want to pursue.

We can use the creative outlet we’ve chosen to help others in a big way once we finally make a decision, but as long as we’re stuck on the fence and unsure of what role we want to play, we’ll stall the greatest of our work and stifle our ability to positively affect others.

My struggle has been in deciding whether I want music to be a part of my role, and either way, I know I’ll never stop writing.

Using words to convey musings and revelations about our spiritual evolution is a form of art that I don’t intend to abandon, and while it’s a calmer and more simplistic method of self-expression than music, it helps me access a deeper part of my consciousness and giving it up is the last thing I want to do.

Credit: Focusnjoy.com

Music is also a great way to access that deeper, more aware part of ourselves, and I’ve struggled with the choice between exploring the sacred silence (i.e. meditating) when I’m not writing or devoting that extra time to the pursuit of music.

Part of me thinks sound is a better way to uplift people than words alone, and the great thing about music is that it utilizes words and sound. It isn’t limited to words, and when played continuously, it’s one of the most uplifting things we can do.

Writing is like meditation in its own way, and the good news is that no matter what I (or anyone else) ultimately chooses, we’ll be able to use our creative abilities to uplift ourselves and others.

There have been times when I thought it’d be better to commit fully to writing instead of taking on something new like music, which will inevitably take time away from writing, blogging and everything else I’ve come to be known for, but I have to admit that I reallyenjoy music.

The decision I’ve arrived at, though it could change, is to let music fade into the background. I’m still unsure, but a lot of great things are happening with the blog and I don’t know if I’d want to take so much time from what’s already developing to try to develop something else.

This isn’t the first time I’ve been faced with a potential shift in my work. I used to be known for channeling, but like I’ve said before, I realized somewhere along the way that I wanted to change things up and do something different.

Thus, I embraced writing as a new method of self-expression, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of the writing journey so far. Writing will always be a big part of my life, and I think it’s one of the best ways to connect with the inner voice/higher self and allow it to speak through us.

Credit: Addicted2success.com

No matter which creative outlet(s) we ultimately settle on, we can use them to express our higher consciousness if we stay sufficiently open. With this in mind, we see that it really only comes down to what we decide to embrace.

Either way, we know we’ll be able to uplift ourselves and anyone who enjoys our work, so the decision really doesn’t have to be difficult.

It’s easy to convince ourselves we’re missing out if we choose one thing over another, but honestly, we aren’t. We’ll tap into our greater awareness either way, so it really only comes down to how we want to tap into it and use the work that results to uplift the world.

One thing’s for sure – refraining from doing anything because we can’t decide is the worst course of action.

Now’s the time to stay creatively busy, for our benefit and the benefit of the conscious community, so no matter what we choose, let’s keep our fire lit as we passionately pursue it. All indecision aside, we’re here to use our spiritually rooted creativity to uplift the world and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Share freely.

"TAURUS THE BULL" FROM WISE OWL SAVANNAH

“TAURUS THE BULL” FROM
WISE OWL SAVANNAH

Gibbous Moon Phase:
trust, magic

Moon in Virgo

Goddess of Wisdom: Chinnamasta (Goddess Who Expands The Mind)

God of Will: Ian (God of East)

Skill: spread warmth and goodwill

True Alignment: common history, connecting with old friends, nourishing the body and soul, connecting with soul families and like-minded people, healing self and helping others, bringing light to darkness, breaking illusions of division and duality, integration of many things, radical insight, spontaneity, rising above, guidance and reassurance from Spirit

Catalysts for Change: demonstrations of force and anger, pushing forward, extreme over-reactions, worries looping around the mind, psychological imbalance, refusing to see light, overworking, dragged down

Sabian Symbol for the Lunar Month/Astrological Year: “music of the spheres”

The leviathan magnetic filament that came from the East and had been building on the Sun for days erupted yesterday, producing a coronal mass ejection. The eruption streamed the energy associated with the Sabian symbol of “black and white children playing happily together.”

A blast of universal fellowship has been sent our way to help us see that division, separation, and segregation are illusions of perception. The fact that the filament’s energy was twisting (literally, producing solar “tornadoes”) and twirling like a giant whirling dervish for days and days only amplifies the powerful effect it will have on the collective of humanity.

We can align with this energetic with concerted focus on spreading warmth and goodwill to all. This would be activating a solar alignment – a wave that emanates from the heart and is in resonance with the music of the Great Sphere, the divine being embodied as our Sun.

Our fellowship with the Sun has taken on a new dimension now that we are in a new dimension. Everyone can participate by maintaining the mindset of goodwill. This becomes a skill when we can practice it is against strong odds, like those in place today with astrological aspects today that favor projection of fears, over-reactions, and coping difficulties. There is an unhelpful dose of moral righteousness peppered throughout, as well.

Today, we re-unite, re-align, re-tune, and re-bound. It’s the first Gibbous Moon phase of the new year, and Gibbous is the magical time of the month. Each of us is a song – music of the spheres – that plays in harmony with the orchestral fellowship of the cosmos. Can you feel it?

(Special thanks to Andrew for transcribing yesterday’s audio report, which is below.)

First Quarter Moon Phase: step out, take action

Moon in Virgo (“Black Moon Day” – those with the Sun or Black Moon in Virgo or Pisces undergo a process of tapping into personal power by facing fears and making friends with their shadow sides; exact conjunction of the Moon and Black Moon is Wednesday, April 29 at 7:35 am ET/11:35 am UT)

Goddess of Wisdom: Chinnamasta (Goddess Who Expands the Fields of The Mind)

God of Will: Ian (God of the East)

Skill: be acrobatic; recognize what is authentic/real through the fruit of actions, not appearance

True Alignment: corrections and repairs (especially to things that are “damaged” or were unnecessary) attention to detail, clues, things that are alternative, ultra-high levels of discernment, breaking limitations, elder people offering wisdom, something pointed out, being directed, direct and indirect action/effects that ripple love and light into the field of consciousness, multiplicity of choices or options

Catalysts for Change: causing damage, pretense, covering up, fooling through the focus on appearances, indecisive, difficulty maintaining focus (due to the number of things being highlighted and brought to attention), inflexibility when changes are presented, fear of not being good enough or qualified enough, minimizing what one has to offer the world, power grabs, projecting one’s feelings onto others

Sabian Symbol for the Lunar Month/Astrological Year: “the music of the spheres”

9:35 am ET: Due to the amount of information, today’s report is being recorded and will be posted at the top of the homepage of www.oraclereport.com shortly.

10:25 am ET: Audio report now posted.

REPORT TRANSCRIBED

So there was so much to talk about with today’s report and on all of the energetics that are involved, the main things to remember are that there are going to be a lot of things happening rather quickly. Things are going to be pointed out directly to us if we are paying attention, and also front-lined into the focus of consciousness of the collective of humanity. It’s on heightened alert visually right now and instinctually, because we have shifted into a new frequency; a new level of consciousness, the Fifth Dimension if you have followed my work and the audio recording for this lunar month.

So today this is an interesting set up because we are at the last day of the Black Moon disseminating the energy of the Sabian Symbol for seventeen degrees of Virgo, which is “a volcanic eruption”. And the moon will make its once a month conjunction with the black moon (the moon does this every month with the Black Moon) and today (well tomorrow morning, Wednesday Morning 7:35 AM) is the conjunction of that, and so this is the last day of the full energy of “a volcanic eruption.” And this has been in place since right after the new moon. So its expanding everything. There is an abundance of choices today and options. There are so many things going on and so many things to choose from. If you are faced with an important decision, you want to look at the fruit of someone’s actions. What they’ve produced and what their intention is. Not what the outer appearance of something is. Appearances fool today. It’s an imprint that the old system is manipulating right now to imprint energies into the field of consciousness.

It is 6 Days until the full moon actually into the full moon phase. So keep in mind it’s a Black moon day so everybody will be projecting their shadow sides, their own fears onto other people. Everybody will, not just people that have the Sun or the Black Moon in Virgo or Pisces. Those folks will have the most intensive experience of the energetic, which could be rather overwhelming and difficult to cope with. So people should engage the skills of the Wise Owl, and the coping skills of being like the Wise Owl in the tree watching what’s happening. You need to ground stabilize and equalize when the shadow energies begin to come up so so high for us to recognize. So I always recommend going outside and connecting with nature. And that’s what will help with all of that. We can release all of those fears.

Fear has no place in the 5th Dimension. It’s disempowered. What works in the 5th Dimension is love. So let’s talk about how we can use that knowledge to handle the days that are coming up and the period of time that I want to highlight in this report, the main focus and the reason for recording all of this because so much was shown today that projects onto the future. Okay so we begin the Gibbous Moon phase tomorrow Wednesday April 29th at 10:55 PM EST. And so the moon will be at that degree/phase/angle with the Sun moving us into the Gibbous Phase. And the Moon will be fresh off of this conjunction with the Black Moon early in the morning. So it’s a flooding in of shadow side energy. Which brings us into the Gibbous Phase of the Moon.

And the Sabian Symbol for the Gibbous Phase of the Moon is “a flag at half mast.” And Tomorrow the Sun will be located at the Sabian Symbol of “a red cross nurse.” And the Earth will be located at the Sabian Symbol “a fellowship supper reunites old comrades/veterans.”

I don’t like this setup that opens the Gibbous Moon Phase of these energetics, especially coming off of “the volcanic eruption” of the Black Moon and all that transpired on Earth with that. AND the energetics, the intense energetics of the Sun right now; that prominence is still dancing and will most likely is going to collapse and produce a hydroflare and a CME. And that is a region of energy that has been building for many many days throughout the First Quarter Moon phase, which is the energy of Stepping Out and taking action. And is seems to be, its looking like old systems of the Old World Order is trying to respond to the energetic. And the opportunities that are implied within a Lunar Month that is the first of the year.

The Lunar Month is equivalent to one long New Moon phase, so everything that’s inserted during that month, everything that’s tried or even tested or balloons that are being sent over. Any type of imprint or intention into the field has energetics that play out throughout the remainder of the astrological year. So we watch everything that’s happening very closely and announcements about the reserve currency last week. They’re seeding a lot of intentions into the field. Well, the Gibbous Moon phase that begins tomorrow on the 29th will contain this energetics: of the Red Cross Nurse, A flag at half mast in front of a public building, and a fellowship supper reunites old comrades/veterans. I don’t like the setup for this and the energetic and the pretense and fooling by appearance false flag.

May 5th – 7th is highlighted. There will be a Grand Trine between Pluto, the Black Moon and theSun.But keep this in mind. We have expansive energy happening and one element contained in this is the signature of Thor’s Hammer within this dynamic. And this is the special signature within astrology that talks about will and drive. It’s also called Gods Fist. You can look it up. It’s a Quadraform.

This says that all of the intentions that are being put in place, the seeds that are being put in place this lunar cycle to be unrolled the rest of the lunar year WON’T WORK because basically Thor’s Hammer is in place to maintain alignment with what is the reality of the 5th Dimension which is manifestation of consciousness that is based within love nature and value of life. If it is contrary to that then it isn’t going to be successful. But it will be tried because there really is no alternative for the other side.

That is a quick overview of what is going on. And also I guess it is a reminder for us that we are just aware of what is happening, watching the field but we know that it is changing so that the way that things appear now, it is not the end of the story. This is a process in motion, a transition in effect. So be aware of what’s happening. We maintain our grounded connection to the planet. We always keep it real. And observe.

So I hope you can tune in when I am on Phoenix’s show tonight. And we will talk more about this and how this is playing out in the geopolitical scene So I hope you can join us then.

Thanks everyone.

(Note: I will be Phoenix’s guest tonight, Tuesday, April 28, 10 pm – midnight ET/ 7-9 pm PT onPhoenix Rising Radio on Truth Frequency Network to discuss the latest. Hope you can join us!)

Intergenerational Transfer

Jesus postingI’d like to continue reflecting on the significance of Jesus’s words here:

“Because you had been so well trained to behave well – frequent punishment and shaming for misbehaving, infrequent rewards for exceptionally good behavior – you do tend to put on a mask or a front of good behavior that is culturally and socially acceptable. Beneath that mask you may fume, rage, or sink into depression.” (1)

His statement is an apt description of what I’ve called in another place “intergenerational transfer” of behavior patterns.

I applied his insight when I felt shame recently. I’d made a mistake and it caused minor hurt and pain on another’s part.

My response was to feel shame and I had to go very deep to “source” (or get to the bottom of) what was happening.

And what I saw was a childhood upbringing in which the making of a mistake was considered shameful.

I’ve said elsewhere that my upbringing at least on my Dad’s side had a lot in common with dog training. “Atta boy, Stevie. Good show” was the form of compliment shouted from the stands at a Little League baseball game. That was the same language we used with our dog.

When I made a mistake, I was a bad boy and told that I oughtta be ashamed of myself.

In its very simplest form, this is how the intergenerational transfer of behavior patterns takes place. It is in a sense training the child, rather than teaching.

Now, without needing any intervention from my parent, I feel shame when I make a mistake.

The really interesting thing is that, as I observe myself in response to my mistake and what follows, if I didn’t know how to work with these feelings, I’d be completely taken over by the mistake/shame pattern.

It wouldn’t even be a behavior pattern; it would be me.

And when it becomes “me” rather than the behavior I do, then I act out the part and speak the lines proper to a shameful person, a stigmatized person.

This is when I start to project my feelings of shame outward if I’m going to do that.

We assimilate a shameful identity, a stigmatizing of the individual, a tight garment of shame that becomes invisible to us as a pattern.

That shame-based identity then results in the breakdown of many of our relationships. We feel less than. We’re insecure. We feel needy. We vamp another’s energy. And it all falls apart.

No one of a couple who behaves this way loves, not transformatively. Or perhaps one loves and the other doesn’t and the one who does runs out of steam. Or the one who doesn’t runs when the loving stops.

Our patterns (or at least mine) are invisible to us. They’re now an identity.

We pass trauma such as physical, emotional or sexual abuse down through the generations. And our unlucky partner becomes the traumatizer as soon as the pattern is triggered.

It takes so much awareness to separate or distinguish ourselves from our tightly-assimilated and integenerationally-transferred patterns.

And even when we achieve a degree of distance from them, the necessity of managing the pain we feel if and when they still go off remains.

None of this is a feature of the life we’re headed for. So we only have a short time left in which these features of Third-/Fourth-Dimensional life will confront us.

But we also have only a short-time left in this rich learning environment here on 3/4D Earth. How much more we can learn about ourselves and human processes here than we can learn, or learn very easily, on the higher planes.

It’s said that we can learn more in a single lifetime of 60-80 years here than we can in 1,000 years on the astral planes. (3)

So this is the last chance we have to cram in every bit of learning in the rich Third-Dimensional human experiment before school is declared permanently over and we graduate.

Chris Thompson: Navigating the Transition

chris thompsonThe world is shifting rapidly towards a new global paradigm. It is replacing modernity, which is well past its sell-by date. Although no one can say exactly what the new paradigm will be, some of its features are already apparent. It promotes a healthy balance between spirit and matter. It has as its central purpose the nurture of all human beings and the wise stewardship of this planet. And at is heart is the idea and practice of “spiritual wealth.”

There is a scene in the movie Dances with Wolves where the Lakota are discussing the invasion of white people into their country. The tribe’s holy man, Kicking Bird, captures the mood of the meeting when he says: “The whites are a poor people, but there are too many of them.” When he says “poor”, he does not mean they lack money or material things. He means they are spiritually poor. And although Kicking Bird knew that the Lakota were skilful warriors, he also knew that the whites used modern weapons, superior numbers and devious means to get what they wanted.

Of course, that was just a movie. Yet the fact is that modern weapons, superior numbers and devious means were indeed used to overcome the indigenous peoples of North America and take their lands from them. That brought disaster. When “white” culture overcame them, dependency, depression and addiction became common.

The experience of the North American tribes has a lot to teach us. If Kicking Bird were alive today, he would not be surprised to learn that dependency, depression and addiction are common in “white” society. He would almost certainly attribute this to spiritual poverty and he would probably wonder how the modern world has managed to survive so long without destroying itself and everything it touches.

We are no different from the original inhabitants of North America. When there is spiritual poverty, we, too, suffer a range of problems. However, since we seem to value the material higher than the spiritual, we tend to assume that the big problems of our time have material solutions, rather than spiritual ones. This is no doubt why we give so much importance to money, material things, and economic growth.

It is very clear that money and material things alone will not solve the world’s problems. Indeed, there are many who believe that the relentless pursuit of money and things may be a major cause of our ills, and that the solutions lie instead in replacing spiritual poverty with spiritual wealth.

This is a complex issue, and it is by no means easy to prescribe a way forward, but it is helpful to examine the nature of the current global paradigm, modernity, because it was modernity, in effect, that defeated the tribes and brought spiritual poverty.

Understanding what modernity is and what its roots are may help us to understand the way to deeper, sustainable solutions to our problems. And it will give us some useful insights into the nature of the new, emerging global paradigm that is now replacing modernity.

“We look to Scotland…”

There was a time when my home country, Scotland, punched well above her weight in inventiveness. Many of the things that we now take for granted had their origin in Scotland or with Scots who lived elsewhere (e.g. Alexander Graham Bell). The list is long and it includes television, refrigerator, microwave ovens, tarred roads, pneumatic tyres, telephone, golf, soccer, the steam engine, radar, modern banking, antisepsis, antibiotics, quinine, fax machines, logarithms, and iron bridges. Scotland’s inventiveness is fairly well known.

However, what is not so well known is that much of the intellectual basis for modern society was developed in Scotland, during the Scottish Enlightenment (roughly 1740-90). Of the personalities involved, Adam Smith and David Hume are perhaps the best known, but there were many others who led the way in economics, science, medicine, and governance. It is difficult today to appreciate just how influential Scotland was in those days. Her intellectual leadership was so powerful that the French thinker Voltaire was moved to write: “… we look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation.”

Although thinkers and pioneers from other countries were also involved in the Enlightenment, Scotland was a major contributor to what we now call “modernity”, namely the ideas, values and beliefs that have shaped the modern world. Few would deny that modernity brought many benefits. It gave us modern economics, modern government, modern medicine, modern education and modern science. There is no doubt that for a long time these things made life better and easier for a large number of people.

However, something has gone very wrong. We have just come through the most destructive century in human history, in terms of damage to each other and the planet, and the present one has not begun well. As the 21st Century gets under way, wars are raging on three continents, inequality within and between nations is grotesquely high and rising, mental and emotional illness are epidemic, and nature and the planet are more seriously threatened than ever. There is a growing sense that the current way of doing things – namely modernity – is well past its sell-by date.

There is also a sense that all attempts to make modernity work better (politicians call this “modernising”) will, at best, bring only temporary relief. What we have long assumed to be the roadmap to progress may turn out to be the roadmap to nowhere. Using modernity and modernising to try to solve our problems is like trying to use petrol to put out a fire.

The economics, medicine, science, education and politics ushered in by the Enlightenment served us well for a long time but, in many important respects, they are no longer fit for purpose. We have reached the point of diminishing returns. This does not mean that we throw the baby out with the bathwater – there are many things about modernity worth keeping – but it does mean engaging in a fundamental exploration of why things are going so wrong. So let us go back to the roots of modernity, to try to understand why it is causing so many problems.

Modernity has its roots in the worldview of modern science. At the heart of this worldview are some apparently self-evident truths:

  • The universe and everything in it, ourselves included, is physical.
  • The universe and everything in it can usefully be regarded as a mechanism, a machine.
  • The universe has no intrinsic meaning. A lot of things happen by chance.

This worldview persists despite profound discoveries in physics and biology that suggest that the universe is non-physical as well as physical, that it is anything but a machine, that it is rich in intrinsic meaning, and that “chance” may lie only in the eye of the beholder. The fact is that classic science worldview has become so powerful and influential that all metaphysical, religious and philosophical claims that contradict it tend to be rejected or put into a box labelled “Interesting, but not to be taken seriously”.

The science worldview rules our lives in more ways than we probably realise. It profoundly influences what we believe, what we value, how we behave, and how society is structured. Yet if, as science seems to insist, the universe began suddenly for no reason (the so called “Big Bang”) and life on this planet emerged by chance, then the world that science wants us to believe in must be intrinsically meaningless. The fact that this statement, as part of that world, must also be meaningless is little consolation!

A life without meaning is a bleak life indeed. For many people today, the search for meaning has become little more than a desperate attempt to try to solve the seemingly endless problems and crises that we create for ourselves. It is as if the modern world consists of two disconnected halves.

One half is constantly creating problems (in practice, this is the majority of us) and the other half is constantly trying to solve them. This is as true for organisations and countries as it is for individuals. Just think how many people are involved these days in “problem-solving” jobs. The list is long. It includes doctors, nurses, police, social workers, therapists, coaches, counsellors, lawyers, politicians, authors of self-help books, and many local and national government workers.

The more we think about, the more people appear on this list. A very large number of people in the world today rely for their income and job security on a huge and predictable supply of problems for the foreseeable future. It begs the question of what they would do in a problem-free world. The uncomfortable fact is that, in a culture devoid of deeper meaning, there is nothing like a good crisis or tragedy to give people a much needed sense of purpose.

In this context it is interesting to reflect on the growing status of the emergency and security services over the last 30 years. I think that one of the big unintended consequences of modernity is loss of deeper meaning. The implications of this are far-reaching because everyone needs meaning in their lives. If they cannot find it in their beliefs or values or work, they will look for proxies, such as drugs, endless shopping, or video games.

Modernity is also characterised by loss of wisdom. If science rejects the accumulated wisdom of the ages in favour of its own empirically derived body of knowledge, then, since science is the dominant form of knowledge today, wisdom is consequently devalued. In non-modern societies, people are content simply to know things without feeling that they have to prove them. And they are content to be guided by their wise elders.

Our modern obsession with evidence means that we end up having to prove everything, even the blindingly obvious, and we no longer have the tradition of wise elders to guide us. We should not be surprised that, with wisdom pushed to the margins of our lives, we have become the most dangerous and destructive form of life on the planet. No other species behaves as we do.

Nor should we be surprised that older people, who in non-modern societies are respected for their wisdom, have also been pushed to the margins, many of them right out of sight into care homes. A traditional society values the wisdom of its older people and of the group. A modern society produces the cult of the young and the individual. In a traditional society, people wise up.

It seems that modern societies have a tendency to dumb down. Just to be clear, I am not advocating that we abandon science. Far from it – science has given us much to be thankful for. But I am saying that we need to be very alert to science’s tendency to kick useful traditional wisdom into the long grass.

Like all indigenous peoples, the Lakota had their problems, such as hostile neighbours and occasional hunger, but they lived what many today regard as ecological, sustainable lives. They took from the environment only what they needed for food and shelter, and they left the environment as they found it. How many of us today could put our hands on our hearts and say that this is how we live?

Too many of us take far more than we need and too many us of leave behind a mess. As we know, when modernity overcame the tribes (and indigenous peoples elsewhere), they became dependent on governments for handouts and were no longer able live in harmony with each other and the planet. I suspect that another unintended consequence of modernity is loss of ecology.

If we add loss of deeper meaning, loss of wisdom and loss of ecology to a worldview that insists that everything is physical, we should not be at all surprised that we live in an era of unprecedentedmaterialism. Our economics, our politics, our education, our healthcare and our culture are steeped in material values and in the behaviours that flow from these. We and the planet are paying a high price for this. We do not care for things we do not value. It is a short step from materialism to “economism”.

Economism is the tendency to view the world through the lens of economics and to believe that economic considerations rank higher than all others. Economism is clearly evident throughout our culture and it is a strong influence in business and political circles. It is significant that some people today refer to countries as “economies” or even “markets”, rather than as societies, and that, when reporting natural disasters, some news channels mention the value of property damaged before they mention the number of people killed or injured.

In non-modern societies economics is a means to an end. It is in service to some greater purpose. In contrast, the modern world has made economics the end itself, in the sense that perpetual economic growth seems to be the central purpose of most countries today. This is reflected in the growth ethic of the business world and in the widespread belief that happiness is to be found through having more money and possessions. If economic growth really is the central purpose of the modern world, then we are in deep trouble, because it is a purpose that has no heart and soul and it does not reflect our humanity.

Now, if it is true that our fundamental beliefs are basically materialist, then our idea of what constitutes “progress” is bound to reflect this. The main indicator of “progress” in the modern world is economic growth. China, for example, is considered to be doing well, simply because her economy is growing fast. In contrast, Japan, whose economy has not been growing much, is considered to be in trouble.

We live in an Alice in Wonderland world of topsy-turvy values. Not only is economic growth thought to be desirable in itself, it is seen by many as a universal panacea that will eventually cure poverty, disease, unhappiness and many other ills. The reality is that there is nothing intrinsically desirable about economic growth. It simply means that we spent more money this year on goods and services than we spent last year. It does not tell us anything about the desirability or quality of these additional goods and services.

It does not tell us anything about the human, social and environmental costs of providing them. It does not tell us anything about income distribution and social justice. Most important of all, it does not tell whether we are getting happier, wiser, and healthier and more fulfilled, which is surely the point of it all. The principal measure of economic growth – GDP – treats the good, the bad and the ugly as if they were all good.

So long as money legally changes hands, it counts towards GDP. If there is more crime to be dealt with, more divorces to be processed, more pollution to be cleaned up, more illness to be treated, and more debt to be serviced, then all of this counts towards economic growth. In fact, nothing boosts growth more than a war or a natural disaster. Since GDP growth gives us the impression that things are going well when they may be going badly, most people continue to believe that economic growth is not only desirable, but indispensable.

Far from being a universal panacea, the relentless drive for economic growth may turn out to be a universal problem, because it brings with it pressures, values and behaviours that damage people, communities and the planet. For example, there are pressures to work harder and to consume more. That causes stress and illness, as well as debt and family breakdown.

There are pressures to exploit and cut corners in the interests of making profit. That causes injustice and corruption. There are pressures to acquire money and possessions illegally. That causes crime. As for the planet, it should be abundantly clear by now that it cannot tolerate the pressures that we human beings are putting on it. None of this is to suggest that the modern world is all bad. Kicking Bird would no doubt agree that it has given us many good things. He liked Kevin Costner’s telescope, for example. However, he would be concerned at the following comparison:

Paradox of Modernity

Spiritual Poverty

By marginalising wisdom and removing deeper meaning and ecology, modernity has unwittingly created a spiritual vacuum. As a consequence, many people feel that something big is missing from their lives. They may not be able to put this into words, but they feel an empty space inside them that cries out to be filled. They experience this as anxiety, discomfort, insecurity, despair, or a sense of pointlessness. Understandably, they try to fill the emptiness, and they do this in a huge variety of ways. They eat too much, they shop until they drop, they watch a lot of television or play a lot of video games.

They rush around doing too much (no surprise that being busy is regarded as a virtue today), or they use sex, drugs and alcohol as pain-killers. These behaviours, worrying in themselves, often lead to alcoholism, obesity, addiction, depression and suicide and other symptoms of spiritual poverty. So long as there is a spiritual vacuum, people are likely to continue to behave in these ways. At best, government policies provide some temporary relief. However, by focusing on material growth and ignoring the causes of spiritual poverty, governments often make things worse.

If modernity is indeed the main root cause of the spiritual poverty that is widespread across the world today, what can we do about it? What can we do to reverse the downward drift into even more materialism? There is no easy answer to this. However, I do think that it is possible to outline some of the general conditions that will favour the emergence of spiritual wealth.

Value Older People

Older people have been pushed to the margins of modern society, while the young occupy centre stage. That is very obvious in the media. Some television programmes, for example, give us the impression that older people have been airbrushed out of existence. Far from being seen as our main source of wisdom, older people are often portrayed as a burden on society or merely as a market for retirement services. Is it any wonder that so many of them feel unvalued and isolated?

In too many instances, it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy that as one gets older, one gets less healthy, more dependent, less valuable and, for all practical purposes, invisible. In some countries people as young as 60 are considered to be “old” and many actually expect to be on regular medication. This is particularly true in the USA. The fact that so much potential is being lost as older people are marginalised is one of the tragedies of our times. We could, if we wished, enable the emergence of a vast amount of wisdom and spiritual wealth simply by raising the status of older people and bringing them to centre stage. That would have a profound effect on all of us.

Bring Back True Education

In its original sense, education is all about bringing out the best and uniqueness in each one of us, even if that means we end up questioning prevailing beliefs, values and behaviours. It is about helping us to realise our potential, including our potential to be truly human. However, although we continue to use the word “education” to describe what happens in schools, colleges and universities, there is not much true education around these days. To a large extent, it has been replaced by its opposite, schooling – which is the process of shaping people to believe and follow prevailing beliefs, values and behaviours. Although there is a lot of talk, by politicians and others, about the importance of education, one is left wondering whether they are talking about a preparation for life or a preparation for work.

If “education” is mainly a preparation for work, then we have a serious problem, because it means that our schools and universities are producing people with skills and knowledge for working in the global economy, but they are not producing people with wisdom and maturity for living well in the world. There are, of course, some notable exceptions, but these are the exceptions that prove the rule. The fact is that true education enhances and enables wisdom, meaning and ecology. Schooling seems to restrict them. Insofar as schooling is the prevalent mode of “education” in the modern world, humanity is being restricted on a massive scale. That is a global tragedy. There is an urgent need to promote true education.

Encourage Self-Reliance

One of the hallmarks of modern societies is their overdependency on business, government and experts for goods, services and knowledge that, in many cases, individuals and communities would be better providing for themselves. As a rule of thumb, dependency is unhealthy, while self-reliance is healthy. The Lakota and other tribes were self-reliant, empowered communities. They were living cultures, rather than vicarious cultures. They did things for themselves, rather than having things done for them.

They recognised the central importance of basic human capacities, such as caring, growing their own food, cooking, healing, educating, creating, and entertaining, and would not dream of having these things provided as commodities and services by government and big business. History has shown us that, as soon as the tribes became dependent on the US Government for the basics of life, they began to decline rapidly. Insofar as modern society is overdependent on business, government and experts for the basics of living, it is “poor in spirit”. One way of enabling spiritual wealth would be to encourage as much self-reliance as possible. In practice, this would require a new economics.

Adopt New Economics

Modern economics clearly ranks money and property higher than people and nature. If you doubt this, then just consider the amount of attention paid to people and places with money and property and the amount paid to those without. This is in complete contrast to the Lakota and other non-modern societies. Their value-systems enabled them to live healthy, dignified lives, in harmony with nature and each other, whereas too many of us live unhealthy, undignified lives, often in conflict with nature and each other. So, why on earth are we so attached to an economics that causes so much disharmony and conflict? We are attached to it because its myths are powerful, and because these myths are skilfully advocated by government, business, academia and the media. Simply stated, the myths are:

  • The market knows best. It should not be interfered with, and it should rule as many aspects of our lives as possible.
  • Private ownership is more efficient, therefore more desirable, than public ownership.
  • Capital is a virtue and deserves the lion’s share of the rewards. By contrast, labour is a cost and that cost should be kept to a minimum.
  • The economy must never stop growing. Therefore all of us need to be ever more competitive and work harder and harder. That will never stop.
  • New technology will enable us to circumvent threats to the environment without having to change our behaviour very much.
  • The rising tide will lift all boats. Thus, economic growth will eventually reduce material poverty and inequality and alleviate problems that are assumed to have their roots in material poverty, such as crime and disease.

These are the principal myths. The reality is very different from the myths. In reality:

  • There is growing inequality within and between nations. The rising tide is lifting the luxury yachts much faster than the small boats.
  • Important aspects of our culture are being dumbed down in the interests of creating mass markets. Many cherished parts of our lives are being commercialised in the interests of profit.
  • Our value-system encourages and rewards personal ambition and selfishness, so why are we surprised that crime, stress and dishonesty are on the increase?
  • The natural environment is more seriously threatened than ever.
  • To cap it all, we have political and other institutions that tend to put the interests of the economy and business before the interests of society as a whole.

All of this is disempowering and dehumanising. We urgently need to adopt an economics that values people and nature higher than money and property, and that is empowering and humanising. As it happens, a New Economics has been emerging for decades, but a fuller description will have to be for another article.

Beyond Modernity

There are many who believe that the price of modernity is too high and that it is time to bring meaning, wisdom, and ecology into our lives, and to find ways to go beyond materialism. As we do this, I believe that we shall find that we are simultaneously creating a new kind of economics, a new kind of education, a new kind of healthcare, a new kind of science, and a new kind of politics. It is impossible to predict exactly what they will be, but they may look something like this…

The new economics will be about enhancing people and planet, rather than exploiting them. At the heart of the new economics will be wisdom, meaning and ecology. It will bring with it new kinds of relationships, new kinds of businesses, and new kinds of institutions. The new economics does not mean that we will not have things to do. There will always be plenty to do. But it does mean that we will be much less likely to overdo!

The new education will be about bringing out the best and uniqueness in each individual, rather than schooling them to believe certain things and to behave in certain ways. At the heart of the new education will be the development, in children and adults, of wisdom, meaning and ecology

The new healthcare will be about self-reliance, rather than about overdependence on experts and technology. Medical treatment will be the exception rather than the rule, because the main focus will be on staying healthy. There will be much less need for doctors, drugs and hospitals, partly because fewer people will be getting ill, but also because our knowledge and understanding of the human being will change profoundly

The new science will be about applying the whole of the human being to the search for knowledge, rather than just the physical and intellectual parts, as at present. Science of the physical will continue to give us much that is useful. However, in the new science, knowledge of the physical will be complemented by knowledge of the non-physical, and that will give us a fuller, richer understanding of the world. The new science will reflect wider, deeper forms of knowing and the additional knowledge that flows from this. It will literally be a “science of the whole” because it will integrate the physical with the non-physical and the material with the spiritual

The new politics will be about the return of power to people and communities, rather than having power concentrated in the hands of politicians and the wealthy. At the heart of the new politics are two ideas – the idea that most power stays at the local level, where it belongs, and the idea that everyone has something useful to say and contribute

None of the above will be easy. People will not willingly give up the habits of a lifetime, and many in power will resist tooth and nail. In fact, if we are honest with ourselves, engaging in the kinds of changes I am suggesting here will be the most difficult thing we ever do. Transformation may seem attractive in theory. In practice, it is often messy and painful. Yet if we want to preserve this planet and survive and prosper as a race, we have no choice but to change fundamentally. That may take a generation or two, but we have to start somewhere.

Afterword

I am aware that I have covered a lot of ground at some speed. My intention is simply to draw attention to the fact that modernity is no longer a health-producing or happiness-producing culture, if indeed it ever was. It has had the unintended effects of marginalising wisdom, meaning and ecology and creating spiritual poverty. If we are ever hope to solve the many problems of the world today, then we have to replace spiritual poverty with spiritual wealth.

Of course, this will mean different things for different people. One thing it means for me is the need for all of us to become much more intelligent, in the fullest sense. In my book Full Spectrum Intelligence I outline how we could train ourselves to become much more intelligent. If enough of us did this, it would be a very different world. It would be a world rich in spiritual wealth.
