Britain's Times named Tunisian fruitseller 'person of 2011'

LONDON (AFP) - The Times newspaper in London on Wednesday named Mohamed

Bouazizi, the Tunisian fruit seller who unwittingly started a wave of protests known as the Arab Spring, as its person of 2011.

The 26-year-old from a poor family set himself alight in the town of Sidi Bouzid on Dec 17, 2010, in protest against harassment by officials, and died from his burns in early January.

His actions sparked a revolt that toppled president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and ignited protests across the region which ultimately led to the fall of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

'Mr Bouazizi takes his place with other figures whose willingness to see through the charade of oppressive rule elevated them beyond the drudgeries and petty humiliations of commonplace existence,' The Times said in an editorial.

Hi Luis,
It is sad when it takes the death of one innocent person to make changes for the good. There are people in many countries that would like to see changes for good, but no one is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. There are so many stories just like this one, where those in power abuse their authority. Here is an example. A woman in Ohio called the police after she was assaulted by her cousin.

Shortly after Shirley moved to Indianapolis to live with me, she told me a story that was shocking, because I did not believe that things like this could happen. She was living at home with her parents until she was twenty-one. Her father passed away in his bed and it became too much for her mother to handle. Eventually, her mother was placed in a hospital for her own protection and Shirley had to find an apartment for herself. Shirley had always trusted people, but was not used to living on her own. She basically stayed to herself, not having many friends and one night there was a knock on the door. She had cashed a check at the bank earlier that day and perhaps was counting the money as she walked back to her apartment. Without thinking she opened the door, not looking to see who it was first. Three big teenagers pushed the door open and knocked her down. One of them pushed her into the bedroom and forced her down on the bed, while the other two went through her pocketbook taking all the money that she had. They also had their way with her. The Landlord heard the screaming and called the police. As the police cars approached with the sirens blasting, the three teenagers climbed out the window. When the two police officers arrived, with tear soaked eyes, Shirley began to tell them what had happened. Then, she began to cry even more because through her tears she could see that one of the officers was undoing his belt. Instead of being saved, Shirley was assaulted (raped), by those who had come to save her. When they finished, they laughed, said, "Have a good night." and left. Shirley crawled out of her bed and went to her living room window just in time to see the police officers under a street light with the three teenagers. What she saw next shocked her even more. The teenagers gave them some of the money that they had stolen. I asked her if she reported it, and said that she was going to but she did not have a phone. The following morning she went to her church and told her priest about it, asking if he could go to the police station with her. She described all five assailants to him. They were all parishoners of his church. He shhok his head and said, "No child. Do not report it. We will take up an extra collection this Sunday for you." She could not believe her ears. She had gone to him for help. As she got up to leave, the priest made her go to the alter and say pentence for her sins. She went to the police anyway and when the desk sargeant read her report along with the names of the two police officers, he sighed, crumpled up the paper and tossed it in the trash. He than gave her a menacing look and said, "That will be all. I have filed your report. You can leave now." This was in 1969, when you did not have the right to report things like that. The Law was the authority and you did not cross their line. She has never forgotten that incident, and I don't imagine she ever will.
I often wonder why those from other parts of the Galaxy would even want to save a race like ours.

Hello Mike,

So sorry to learn especially about Shirley's atrocious experience. I don't believe what some chanellers say about people who agreed
before they were born to "play" the bad guys' role at this time here. I also don't believe those that say God forgives us all even our most atrocious sins, provided that we are repentant and ask him to forgive us; and that all we have to do then is move forward.

I believe what Jesus says, "As you sow so shall you reap." Call it karma or the Law of Talion, there is no escaping it. There are certain wrongdoings that only after you have paid for them can be left behind. Such as you have told me about, especially those committed by the authorities themselves, are the worst kind among them and woe to those people who committed them. Ask Moses, David and so many other great souls who for all their greatness had to pay because they harmed others.

I have always thought that any wrongdoings however small must be paid out, especially when done against others. I did many of these when I was a young and uncaring guy and I am paying for them even now. What can then be said of those monsters of cruelty as you describe? You better pay now in this life than in any future ones.

I also believe things have gone way too far in our time to be left unpunished. We also cannot be expected to do justice on our own, we tend to punish the weak and forgive the powerful. Also, we should not avenge the wrongs done on us on our own, we would be setting the wheel of karma again in motion. I believe we need God to descend again to this valley of sorrow in order to make things right. The Book of Revelation tells about Christ in all his Glory setting apart the evil guys and sending them to Hell to pay for their sins, after which a new Millennium is established. And the Hindu Scriptures tell about the Kalki avatar who is to appear at the end of this age to kill the demons and inaugurate a new, golden Age on Earth. They both judge and make war and they each ride a white horse.

Hugs,

Miguel

Hi Luis and Michael,

These two stories are horrible. I can't imagine how devastating they must be. However I do know you pay for your transgressions, one way or another. But, I also believe that it doesn't matter how bad someone hurt you, you need to forgive that person or persons. Not so much for them, but the most important part is what forgiveness does for you. Forgiveness is a real blessing to you.

Why I am saying these things, well about 7 years ago I was in a bad car accident. In my time in a home, while I was healing, my pastor said to me "Myrna you know you have to forgive him," I thought about it , in fact I didn't think about much else for several days.I had to forgive this man who went though a stop sign and put me here! Why should I forgive him? After a few months of thinking about it, I forgave him and it was amazing how much better I felt. You know that man never knew how I was feeling about him, he just went on with his life. So I was the one suffering, not him. I know now in my heart of hearts that forgiveness is the biggest thing we can do for ourselves. The ball is in our court, no one else.

Here is the easiest way to learn forgiveness that I have ever heard, everyone should use it daily. Just repeat time and time again these simple words. "I sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I love you". That is all there is too it. Very helpful

Yes the new age is coming, hey folks it will be so wonderful. This is the year 2012
Blessings,
Myrna

I would welcome a "new age".....as long as it doesn't have much to do with "New Age".

There's a lot of woo-woo and meaningless nonsense floating around out there.

I agree with Perry Marshall that the number one skill you can learn today is DISCERNMENT: being able to separate the facts from the BS.

In a world where people actually believe in things like homeopathy, crystals,
magic underwear, hologram bracelets, aromatherapy, seances, psychics and fortune-tellers....

....I think the best thing that anyone can resolve in 2011 is simply this:

"I resolve to live life in 2012 as free from illusion, delusion, frauds and
charlatans as I possibly can. I resolve to increase my critical thinking
skills and learn to weigh the evidence for claims instead of just naively
believing what someone says.

"I resolve to remember that -- just because it's on the Internet -- doesn't
make it true.....and that it's quite possible for millions of people to all be
simultaneously wrong about something (after all, once upon a time,
everyone believed the world was flat.)

"I resolve to think for myself. And not to let anyone else do it for me."

I think that resolution will do more to bring peace, joy and wisdom to our
lives than anything else.......and subsequently it will cause us to be more
effective, prosperous and profitable as well.

Happy New Year everyone!
