Hello Peter, Jack and Angela,
Thank you for your collective comments.

When it comes to helping and doing good for others, "Just do it".

Is that what Nike is doing? LOL!
OK. Silly stuff aside. Yeah, sometimes people who do good things for others do mention it. Maybe they feel as though their efforts are not appreciated and it frustrates them. I know that sometimes I get no thanks for some of the things that I do. It makes you wonder sometimes.
In fact, I was at a restaurant on Sunday with some friends and this very subject came up. My friend Pete said he opened a door for a woman the day before. He was just trying to be nice. She bolted through, looked him in the face and spat: "What do you think I am a f*****g invalid?"
Jokingly, he told us that he felt like slamming it in her face to make her such. But I could tell that she had really upset him.
You see, her rudeness not only exposed her lack of manners but it hurt him too. It will also make him think twice the next time. Once bitten, twice shy. So the world just became a little bit meaner and harsher because of her thoughtless arrogance. If she had just smiled and said a simple thank you, wouldn't that have been nicer for everybody?
And that is something that we see far too much of - rudeness, lack of respect, impatience and the "ME, ME, ME" syndrome. You can see it on full display every time you get into your vehicle and drive anywhere these days. Well, at least that is how it is in my neck of the woods.

"Now you just hit on another interesting point. Gift giving at Christmas time. I'm not ready to comment on this crusade."

OK. I was just using Christmas as an example. However, sometimes just a kind word can be the difference between somebody continuing to live or committing suicide. Some people reach that point in their lives where just ONE more bit of bad luck or nastiness off somebody will tip them over the edge.
If a person's HEART is not in the Christmas spirit then they shouldn't partake of it. That would be to live a lie.
Personally, I think Christmas is WAY too over commercialised these days, perpetuated of course by retailers looking to make their end of year profits.
The really smart people in society are those who don't buy Christmas gifts but swoop in and take advantage of after Christmas sales where items can drop by 50% or more in just a couple of days.

"Gary, how do you know you are not a hero? From what I know just from reading these forums, you could very well be a hero. You appear to be a man of action well aligned to your words and that is a very good quality for a hero. You may have more people that look up to you than you realize."
=====================
Well Jack, to me a hero is somebody who puts their life on the line to save a toddler from being run over by a bus or a soldier who commits a valourous act to protect his mates, that sort of thing.
I would accept the man of action tag. What irks me is how most people do so little then whinge their heads off about how bad and sad life is. Everybody wants to be a bazillionaire - but so long as other people do the work and make them so. We see plenty of that, don't we?
Yeah Jack, I saw "Batman Begins." I thought all the martial arts scenes were way over the top - completely unrealistic in the extreme - like most movies that include such content. Other than that I quite liked the story. And, if you wanna buy me a present, you could get me the Batmobile Jack. LOL!
Angela, that was very kind of you. If it were true there would be a lot less violence. I detest violence. However, some people deserve to cop it because it is the ONLY method or language that they know and speak. Sad, but true.
Maybe I should petition Bogdan to change the name from Adland to Rantland.
Linda, you started me off again!
