. . I meant to add this at the end of my previous post... The employee will probably end up being the guy who started Starbucks or something. :0)

Hi: Dave Cottrell got it spot on. This scenario actually happened. =========================================== This is an employee of mine who is making my customers very happy and thereby creating repeat customers who will tell their friends about my hotel and bring me even more customers. He is showing initiative, leadership and entrepeneurship. This is going to raise my bottom line... I would have a private meeting with my employee, and first of all make it clear that he needs to work with me on this as he IS working for me. ... Of course his new position will bring him a higher level of income as well. =========================================== The hotel manager thought about it for a while. He decided that the customers were happy. We all know that the lifeblood of a business is the customer. After thinking about it, he decided that the employee showed initiative, leadership and entrepeneurship... and as such, was an asset to the company. So he gave the guy a promotion, cut a deal with the cafe owner and let the guy run the program. As a side note - and my thoughts - most of us have experience with the kind of boss that wants the employees to just follow orders. Do what's on the job description. Don't think of new things and don't make waves. Just do what you're told. Etc. But, the kind of employee that can bring initiative, leadership and entrepeneurship (in my opinion) is usually an asset to the company if the boss can see past the "rules" to see what the person truly has to offer. That's what the hotel manager did. Good one Dave! : ) Linda P.S. Deb, David and a couple of others posted close, which made me smile. Dave was spot on. He also got the promotion part.

LOL How about the boss who expects that, then craps on everyone when things are going wrong, saying "I wish you people would use some initiative". Damned if you do, Damned if you don't! Yet one more reason to be in business for yourself! :-)
