Hi everyone.
Sorry I have not posted much this week.
Some low-life managed to get hold of Pam's social security number. We do not know how or where, but the police are arresting her (the criminal) as I write this.
So, we should find out more next week.
Not to much damage was done, as the bright lady(?) applied for a credit card, & it was delivered here, instead of to her address.
She actually put her real telephone number & name down on the application but left all of Pam's information in place....
The police were most intrigued by the stupidity of the criminal & it has made their job so much easier.
Anyway, apart from that & getting a ton of emails from kind people in Nigeria who want to give us loads of money to help them out.
I actually totalled up the whole amount from 75 emails asking us to help them move their Fathers, Mother's, Uncle's, Aunties, Brother's, Sister's etc hidden money to our bank accounts.
It totalled 9.7 BILLION dollars.
Don't you just really get a kick out of these morons.......
Have a few handy URL's for you all.
First one is the site for the Carnegie Mellon University called.
The Computer Emergency Response.
http://www.cert.org
It's a website that posts each & every new virus as they are discovered, run & manned by an uncounted number of security watchers around the world.
Here is the UL for the Anti-Phising Work Group Site.
http://www.antiphishing.org
You will get the lowdown on all the schemes of what is called crimeware or maleware. It's also filled with bar-charts & pie graphs showing numbers of schemers, numbers of victims, most affected countries etc, etc.
These are excellant reference sites & if you check them regulary, it will save me a job of informing you of every scam, con, fraud thats around. (Just joking, I will still up-date you all)
Also, one word of warning if you are trying to get virus protection programs from Symantec, the makers of Norton virus protection.
Someone made the mistake of mis-spelling the name & put symantic.com, instead of symantec.com.
They got a website called Errorsafe.com.
This 'site' offers to scan your computer for viruses, provides a dignosis & offers a program for $39.95
Trouble is, it also downloads the errorsafe program on your computer, which has two spyware programs buried in it.
Winfixer & ABCScrabble.
Both of these nasty programs carry a very high elevated threat level.
Just reaching the site causes a blitz of pop-ups, ads & numerous websites when you try to close the site.
Beware of any of these type of sites that look similar & have very similar URL's, always check you have put the correct spelling in your browser before searching. These mirror sites are set-up by the scammers & con-men to get you to buy a useless program which not only infects your P.C with maleware, but also loads key-logger software to your system, so that every click you make is recorded. There is also another program called a scraper, or scrapers. This lovely little virus will grab a picture of an entire screen & send it & all the information contained in it to the virus programmer. So if you happen to be paying a bill, or buying something, or checking out your own records. Somebody else also gets the same info as you are looking at.
One last final thing.
I have been buildingus a new company wesite. So far the first or Home page is almost ready.
There will be more pages added (If I get the time)
http://www.freewebs.com/pthgroup/
It's a freebie site builder, from Freewebs, but you can have fun with it if you do not want to spend hours writing code (Unless you like writing code).
Thats all for the moment friends. I will try to update more on security issues over the weekend, but I have a nasty trip to the Dentist tomorrow morning (Saturday) & he's not going to be nice to me, or Pam. So we might just go out in our lovely desert town afterwards & have liquid refreshment to recover....
Your security friend in Las Vegas.
