NAA Board Member Laura Bono made the following statement during the time set aside for public comment: Laura Bono – Board Member, National Autism Association First of all I’d like to thank NIEHS for taking on this controversial subject in order to find the truth. I also thank the panel for all of your thoughtful questions here today and for your time that you are devoting to this matter. It is so very important to the health of the nation’s children. As a National Autism Association Board Member and mother of a son who regressed after his 16 month vaccinations, was diagnosed with PDD then later correctly diagnosed with Heavy Metal Toxicity, I implore you to listen to the Autism Community Concerns with regards to the VSD and the CDC. The CDC is not trusted by many of the autism groups to do a study of this type. Senator Lieberman and others who sent a letter to NIEHS on February 22 said something similar. The National Autism Association believes that the CDC should not be involved at all. Given the panels strict guidelines for working within the VSD the CDC’s involvement may be a foregone conclusion. And if so, I implore you on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of suffering children to take the following considerations at heart when you conduct your study: National Autism Association asks that you expand the criteria to all Neurodevelopmental Disorders and not just autism. As we have heard today, many children are first diagnosed with a milder diagnosis and go on to be officially diagnosed with autism later. Some never get an official diagnosis due to insurance coverage and many leave the HMO all together looking for treatments. Heavy metal toxicity has a wide range of symptoms, therefore in the spirit of getting to the bottom of the real problem, do not limit the parameters to just autism. We also ask that you insist on expert oversight and transparency in selection criteria and the actual pulling of the data. The old saying of “Garbage In, Garbage out” may apply here. Will you make sure the autism community as stakeholders are involved? Will you make sure that experts evaluate the VSD before you ever begin? Will you do a spot check? Does the data reflect the incidence of autism at the time period? For instance does the California HMOs for 1994 have an incidence like the well-reported California DSS data of 1 in 500 in 1994, 1 in 250 in 2000 and 1 in 166 in 2002? Also, can you make sure that independent SAS experts, without bias and conflicts, be on hand at every step in pulling the data sets? Data sets have been destroyed in the past and selection criteria changed based on initial results. We want to make sure this does not happen again. Will you consider Aluminum in your study? You will be looking at thimerosal exposure and autism but we fear that aluminum in vaccines has been steadily rising in vaccines as the thimerosal is lowered. As you know there is a synergetic affect of metals. An LD1 of lead and an LD1 of mercury equal anywhere from an LD50 to an LD 100. What have we done as we increase aluminum exposure along with trace amounts of thimerosal? Will children still be diagnosed with autism after thimerosal is removed because we will simply be substituting mercury toxicity with aluminum toxicity? Flu Vaccine exposure in mothers and children. Flu vaccines are being recommended for mothers and children. The CDC has refused to state a preference for mothers and children to received non thimerosal containing vaccines therefore this vulnerable unborn population has been at increased risk of Neurodevelopmental disorders. The prenatal exposure of ethyl mercury is worrisome coupled with even more thimerosal from flu vaccines after birth. Since we cannot follow the mother’s exposures, we will not be able to track this very important exposure group in relation to autism outcomes. This is also true for all Rhogam shots given to pregnant mothers. In designing your study, please find a way to track this important prenatal exposure? Another side comment to remember: if you only look at the time period of 1999 forward keep in mind that the average age of autism diagnosis is 4 ½ years old. You’ll need to reach back to children in the birth year of 1994 to access those diagnosed in 1999. In closing, the only way to do this study without the CDC and the inherent conflicts that come with the same agency promoting vaccines is the same agency in charge of the safety data, is to look to a totally different source of unvaccinated populations like that seen in the Amish or the large Chicago Pediatrics Practice of Home First. As UPI investigator Dan Olmsted has reported, the unvaccinated populations have surprisingly low incidence rates of autism and other NDDs. It could be argued that the Amish may have a protective gene but there is no argument against the large practices in Chicago that cut across all genetic, ethnic and cultural boundaries. We could easily find an age-matched vaccinated population for comparison and do the expert study that we all want to see. Hello Everyone It may appear to some of you that I have given up in my quest to help improve the lives of those affected by autism due to the lack of activity on this forum. I assure you, that is not the case. I have been involved in a lot of other, personal matters as well as moving and several other things that have kept mne from my computer. I will continue this advocacy for those with autism for as long as I am able, which most likely means the rest of my natural life. I hope that you will join me in this quest. We need all of the help we can get and there is great promise and potential for improvement just around the coener. Here is one way you can help right now. Please forward this link to your friends so that we might gather even more momentum in this battle to end autism. Also, the following is another way you can help. THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY. SIGN YOUR NAME, AND SAY NO TO INHUMANE AVERSIVE THERAPIES. Friends and Parents, Aversive therapies are being practiced right now on autistic children across the country. The systematic use of hitting, pinching, electrical shock, sleep deprivation, and so much more are being used against children unable to defend themselves. Do you believe this is wrong? Do you think there must be a better way? We do. Today, a growing number of children diagnosed with autism are being successfully treated biomedically to address physical issues which can result in self-injurious behaviors and emotional outbursts. Not only are aversive methods physically and emotionally painful, they offer nothing towards recovery and may even work against it. If you agree, raise your voice by signing your name. http://www.petitiononline.com/NYs6876/ Lawmakers who are trying to stop these cruel methods need our help. They need as much support from us as they can get. Will you sign your name? Will you join us in telling facilities practicing these methods, "Stop aversive methods! There has to be a better way!"? These methods will continue if we don't raise our voices right now. Sincerely, The NAA Team Think Autism. Think Cure. Hello Everyone Every now and then we get some good news regardng autism and this is one of those times. Here is a post that I just copied from one of my other threads that I thought I would share with you. Greetings Friends I come bearing good news. The House of Representatives has approved 7.5 million dollars for research of autism. This is an example of what we can accomplish when we work together towards a common goal. This is part of a defense spending bill so it still has to clear a couple of committees and the senate yet though so, our work is not yet done. Please keep those letters and phone calls going and get this passed. Autism Speaks Lauds Unprecedented House of Representatives Military Appropriation for Autism Research Landmark Spending Proposal, Which Recognizes the Unique Plight of Military Families Impacted by Autism, Comes After More Than Three Years of Advocacy by Autism Speaks Volunteers (NEW YORK, NY - June 13, 2006) – Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism and raising money to fund autism research, today praised the House of Representatives Defense Appropriations Subcommittee's passage of its FY 2007 appropriations bill which, for the first time, includes a line item for $7.5 million for research on autism spectrum disorders. The bill must now pass through the Joint Conference Committee. Each year the Department of Defense invests tens of millions of dollars in various medical research programs. In FY 2005, for example, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer were among the diseases funded by the DOD. This appropriation measure would mark the first time such spending has been directed toward research into autism, a disorder that now affects one in every 166 children. “This is a watershed moment for the autism community as we continue to seek federal funding for autism research that is commensurate with the scope of this epidemic,” said Bob Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks. “We are grateful to the members of the House of Representatives whose leadership and appreciation of autism's particular toll on military families made this possible. This funding will help drive the research that will eventually yield the answers about autism that we all seek so desperately.” Based on the most recent prevalence estimates, at least 4,600 children and minor dependents of active duty families have autism, and the cost of their treatment exceeds $200 million per year. Autism Speaks has been advocating for military spending to support autism research for more than three years, beginning with the efforts of the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), the organization it merged with in February 2006. http://www.autismspeaks.org/press/defense_autism_funding.php May a smile follow you to sleep each night,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and be there waiting,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, when you awaken. Hi William, Good to read this report. Since I am no longer involved in special education, this kind of information does come to me. So, I appreciate hearing about this as there is still interest there on my part.
