Re: Article #2; A Smart Way To Get Better Response to Affiliate Links

Linda, This post was so helpful! I'm going to go back and change all my links to do this. I could use one more pointer... Once I've masked my links, how do I make them open in a new window? I know they do that automatically here at Adland, but I need to know for my website. My mastermind group has advised me to open my links in a new window so that I don't lose my ezine readers to a site that won't let them back-up after checking the link. I get frustrated when that happens to me, too, so I agree with the advice. However, I know about as much html as I need to create the link in the first place...the rest of the site is the magic of Site Studio. If this isn't the place to get that question answered, do you know where I could? Cheri PS, Thanks for all the great information. I am enjoying every bit of it, including all the replies! :-)

Hi Cheri; ===== I could use one more pointer... Once I've masked my links, how do I make them open in a new window? I know they do that automatically here at Adland, but I need to know for my website... If this isn't the place to get that question answered, do you know where I could? ===== The way to open a link in a new window is this; A normal link (like this one to google) looks like this; [a href="http://www.google.com"]Google[/a] To open in a new window, add this; [a href="http://www.google.com" target="_new"]Google[/a] And, for more complex website stuff, just click Peter's forum, here; http://community.adlandpro.com/forumShow.aspx?ForumID=7227 There's a wealth of info there about websites. : ) Linda

Hi Linda! I am new to all of this, I did not understand a word you just said...lol! I currently sell mobility products online, have several affiliate websites on line and run a business that sells a service. Admittedly, I am not puter literate. I would like to know more about masking the affiliate numbers at the end of the links. Is there a way of doing it without getting the main site angry? Are we really allowed to do this? How? I just wanted to say that I have been on here for about three hours today, I am impressed to see people helping people, just like me! Thanks Linda! I look forward to hearing your response...I would have never thought of doing this!!! Thanks again!

Hi Darcy; =============== I am new to all of this, I did not understand a word you just said...lol! I currently sell mobility products online, have several affiliate websites on line and run a business that sells a service. Admittedly, I am not puter literate. =============== I had to laugh. I still remember my first day online, back in 1995. I sat in front of the computer and turned it on. After clicking on a few things, I had to call my 12 year old to ask her what to do next. She said "open your browser" -- I said "what's that?" lol. Then she said "now go to Yahoo" - I said "how do I do that?" lol This was on dialup with an external modem. lol. Thing is, we all start somewhere and we all learn this stuff one step at a time. With the hours I've spent online in the last 10 years, I figure I've got to be the Yoda of the Internet. lol. =============== I would like to know more about masking the affiliate numbers at the end of the links. Is there a way of doing it without getting the main site angry? Are we really allowed to do this? How? =============== Yes, it is possible to mask the affiliate numbers without getting the parent site angry. Here's how. A normal affiliate link looks like this:
[a href="http://www.somewhere.com?id12345"]Click here[/a] When you put your mouse on the link, your id will show. A masked link looks like this:
[A HREF="http://www.somewhere.com?id12345" onMouseOver=" window.status='Click Here!'; return true" onMouseOut="window.status=' '; return true"]Click here[/a] When you put your mouse on the masked link, your affiliate id won't show. "CLick here" will show. Mind if I add a comment not related to links? I think you have good potential to do really well with your mobility devices at; http://www.northernlightsmobility.com/ I think the site could use a little help, though, to achieve it's potential. I'd really suggest that you pop over to Peter's forum (he's the website guy) and ask him to have a look at your mobility devices site. His forum is at;

Linda, Can't thank you enough, you've saved me a lot of time and that's precious stuff! I read the next post and your reply and got a big kick out of it. I'm an old DOS user, started my computing career with office productivity software in the mid-80's. By the time the Internet was the WorldWideWeb, I had niched myself in the health-care business using proprietary IBM AS-400 (mini-computer) software. In other words, I missed the Windows revolution. You'd laugh if you knew just how much still mystifies me, but thankfully they make automatic html builders for dummies (me), lol. Now, if I only knew how to use all their features... :-} Cheri
