Amanda,
Thank you very much for contributing to this discussion.
I too have found poetry to be a useful way in which to unload emotions.
I have, like most people, suffered occassional sleep problems. Long ago I decided that I would not get up and disrupt my routine but would read instead. Then I discovered that to compose poetry worked better for me.
The very action of finding a rhyme or a word offered a challenge which was in itself tiring. The plus came in the morning when I had a new poem or a really good start to one to show for my sleeplessness.
Writing can be very therapeutic and as you say it can provide a different way to record or reassess events in our lives. Humour is a great healer for stress and if we can focus upon a humerous situation or theme we are diverting our mind from our stress problems and the nervous system has a chance to make repairs.
Amanda, I have read your poetry with enjoyment and with a sense of knowing that I was privileged to be reading about a life-changing event in your life.
Your contribution here might well help somebody.
Roger
