I love chocolate

What is it that makes me love chocolate?

Is it the taste or maybe the smell?

Or is it the great expectation

That makes me like it so well?

*

I find it in unexpected places

On ferries and on trains and on planes.

In the queue-line at DIY superstores

But I’m told that it’s good for my brains.

*

My glove box is crammed full of wrappers,

There are more in the well of my door.

And if I’m not careful to bin them

Then more often there’s more on the floor.

*

Do you think that there’s chocolate in heaven?

I do hope that God likes a square.

Satan himself just might tempt me.

But he’s only HOT chocolate down there.

*

I’ll give up my chocolate for New Year,

I’ll eat healthy snack-bars instead.

But until then I’ll keep eating

And hope that daft idea leaves my head.

Dawn is nigh and the fox,

Returning late from her midnight feast

Makes her way home on slender legs.

Not for her the bright lights.

She’s no urban thug. She’s all ferral class.

Hidden, deep below ground

Still shivering with fear,

The rabbit recalls.

Sharp eyes, sharp teeth, sharp appetite.

Now welcome home but one less friend/.

Yesterday, in the sun

They shared the same sunlit hillside.

Fox and rabbit.

One sleeping, one alert,

Both knowing, come darkness all is change.

Soon, this meadow will disappear.

Soon the machines will come.

Soon, new homes, people and cars.

The fox, now forced to urban thuggery

Steals and searches for scraps.
