The Secret of Contentment
6/6/2008 1:08:16 AM
This is a post from my website Beautiful Summer Morning. I present it here because of the power of the photo to evoke a feeling. Let me know what you think.

Oh Fragile Life

The secret of contentment is knowing how to enjoy what you have, and to be able to lose all desire for things beyond your reach.

This is one of those proofs that a picture is worth a thousand words.

There is a simple joy here; the contentment of having a nest, of bringing warmth to new life, and pride of location.

While the bell could be a danger, here it is a roof offering a dry place away from the elements.

“What more could I possibly want?” asks the bird.

Gaze on the photo and the bird, and let the bird’s contentment enter into you and wash away desire, and leave behind (for the breath you tarry) simple, profound joy.

It brings tears to my eyes.

Let Life Teach You,

Nick

PS The photo was taken by my sister, a budding photographer, on the day we interred our mother.

Mum’s message: all is well.

Hi Nick:

Well, as you can see by the posting time, I'm on the air overnight. I decided to check out ALP and found your email and the above photo. What is so ironic is that while I am sitting here typing this, the disco hit - Ring My Bell - came up in rotation for air play :) ... About the photo and it offering a feeling to those who view it... it is obvious that this tiny creature is content, even where we might be concerned about where she has built her nest.

My sympathy for the loss of you Mom....know that she is with our Lord...that place where truly, all is well.

PAX,

Joe Buccheri

Hello Nick,

That picture is worth a thousand words.  That bird looks so content there, yet it worries me for her safety. It brings a lump in my heart and throat. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I want to give you my Heartfelt Sympathy for the loss of your Mother.  I know she is in a much better place then we are.

God Bless

I love your theory and your photo.  If we are not happy with what we have we will never be happy.  Of course we can try for more but it doesn't always bring us happiness.
