Dear Pauline and friends!

Many friends told me to stay out of RSP (Religion, Sex, Politics). Where is the "free speech" and our human rights then. RSP are "don't  touch" subjects. In my opinion everything in life is related to religion (faith, spirit, behavior), sex (love, contact, communication, exchanging experience) and politics (strategy, rules). Some people know how to combine RSP with all themes and subjects, others don't and feel many times offended if a sensitive subject appears. I feel sorry for all those who can't open their horizon and touch a problem from multiple perspectives.

The forums: The owner choses the category and the subjects he wants as priority to be discussed. The members may have same or opposite opinion. Public forums are best when you want open debates and discussion. If you chose a subject single-sided direction or for information moderated forums are the best. Personally I dislike moderated forums because I am straight and if I see somebody post "bull shit" I jump in to give my meaning . It have happened that posts of mine have been sorted out and not approved because of contrary and reverse opinion.

Public forums:
Everyone can self chose to be a member and post in the forum. As long as he behaves social nobody reacts. The forum owner do not accept (approve) or decline a member or a post - reply. The forum moderator can any time delete posts offending others and even block a member if he don't respect the discussion. All public forums are not always community related. It depends of the subject. In public forums you have direct contact.

In public forums you have a form of democracy. In Adlandpro there are  friends who can not accept straight replies and sometimes people fight instead of arguing. I have been involved some times in such confrontations.

My forums are all public. I don't fear spammers. I warn them if they do something wrong and if they are OFF topic (posting ads instead of giving opinion on discussed subject) I show places where they can post their ads.

Moderated forums
: The moderator choses the members and all the replies. Than is anti-democratic. The moderator wants only smiles back or applauses to his posts. A confronting opinion will never be allowed and approved. In moderated forums the contact is indirect. There is risk that a post you prepared for ours may never be accepted and posted in the forum. Some good friends have moderated forums and I am member there. Though I find the forums not community related I support them.
In the moderated forums you may never see if somebody feels offended by a post or tell your opinion if you disagree with the information given there.

I have tried moderated form of forums. In my opinion that is a bad way to communicate so I abandoned this form. Social work can not be based on moderated forums.
Moderated forums are good for special work. Business work can be moderated.

I agree with the judge in Paulines post, but after all what have happened in the past maybe our friends who have moderated forums fear for bad situations.

The form of forums is controles by the community admin who decied the best for the community.

We have closed forums (private), half-closed forums (moderated) and open forums. I can not hide behind a finger so I prefer all my forum open.

Pauline I think it might depend on the subject matter of the forum.  I put my "Post Your Business Opportunities here" with no screening.

Keeping spammers out of forums is a good idea.

Have a great day!

Barb :)

Hello Pauline and friends :-)

Nice to see a real debate...
Well, at first I wanted to be only a watcher but ... here I am ... after "watching" my friends posts.

I have to say that moderated forums are not my favorites - generally speaking - even if there are a very few I have on my favorites to visit. If its "professionally conducted" I don't see why they wouldn't compete for the BFA?

Even thou, I'd say a few words what I think about them:
we all have the freedom to decide whether
TO MODERATE
or NOT TO MODERATE

Maybe a moderated forum do not show any SPAM ever, only if its the moderators will! But this also prevent us in getting to know our community members. As some of our friends said its better to educe the ones who don't know; we neither were all mighty and all knowers from the beginning. DELIBERATE SPAMERS WON"T LEARN ANYWAY!! Just take a look at your Photo Gallery; instead of writing replys or reading my friends posts, I spent more then half an hour deleting who know what links and ringtones and STUFF from the comments of a MAGNOLIA?! Well, this is one of my frustrations but I'll leave ti there and go along?!

BUT... moderation makes communication much less impersonal and direct! One may feel like: mom' may I tell ... this or this to ... my friend?!

In open forums, Deleting SPAMS requires less time than from photo gallery!!! Use DELETE  or Report Button and explain (for the first time) and besides it gives a much better feeling of freedom of speech and expression and makes communication a bit more alive; as aside effect we can know our friends a bit better; after all here online the only way of acquaintance is by the means of WORDS and the way we use them.

Well, I think and mostly HOPE you could see my point with respect of this issue.

As I've said, even thou MODERATED a Forum might be good but if I were a judge, I would give some penalty points at the "owner interaction" due to its barriers raised among forum members because I think a Forum is not just a communication between owners and participants but participants and participants as well.

Sorry for my rather long and complicated post!

This is it!

Hugs and best wishes,
Anamaria

Hello Pauline,

I think there is usually another reason for moderating a forum. The spam happens. But it takes me a lot less time to elimiate the spam than it would to look at and approve every post.

Unmoderated forums always give you the option of sending a note explaining why you deleted a post. In moderated forums if your post does not meat the approval of the owner it just does not get posted.
So moderated forum tend to be more biased and not allow for open discussion.

I have no problem controlling the content of my unmoderated forums. When I delete a spammer I give them links to an appropriate place to post. In my case as in many others I provide a thread for ads. So I just ask them to please post the ad in that thread.

Just thoughts. I do think if you restrict moderated forums from being nominated it needs to be spelled out in the rules.

Even More Sunny Greetings from California, Pauline!

Here is absolutely my last word on the topic of "moderated forums."

In a true open forum, people are free to post anything they wish with no restriction, and no one has the authority to remove their posts.

If a forum owner has rules and has the ability to remove a particular post that violates those rules, it is not truly an open forum, regardless of what one may choose to call it, and regardless of when the post is removed.

Any forum owner that removes posts for any reason, at any time, is moderating the forum, call it whatever you like.

Again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in this discussion.

P.S. I think maybe I should start a new forum called "Word Games," since everybody seems to have so much fun playing them. JUST KIDDING! SMILES, LOLs, and all that.

Have an Awesome Week!
