Hi Roger and friends,

So sorry, I forgot this one!

Caravaggio - Rest on the Flight to Egypt (Oil on canvas, 1596-97)

This is spectacular.

Where does a person start to describe this. It is crisp, detailed, sympathetic and descriptive.

What must the average person at that time have thought when seeing this for the first time. We are spoilt by over exposure in the 21st century. It must have been like magic.

I am in awe of this painting because of its story simplicity.

So many great paintings of the time had deep biblical meanings which needed understanding. This THE STORY, THE WONDER OF THE EVENT and the HUMAN STORY as well as a CELEBRATION.

Thank you Miguel.

Roger

This is my wife's favourite painting.

A beautiful image indeed.

Hello Roger,

I agree with Pat, in that it is mainly beauty that is all about in art. This is something that with very few exceptions many otherwise great artists of the 20th century seemed to forget for the most part.

The neo Classicists' works, in particular Frederick Leighton's paintings, have been to me a source of deep pleasure and great delight to view in the past. I have in my PC a huge collection of their works. I also used to collect Bouguereau's most beautiful paintings; I know he is classified as an Academic artist, but to me at least, he and Frederick Leighton were most similar both in style and taste.

What a difficult task to choose a favorite work by F. Leighton! Other than
Flaming June I can only think of two or three strong candidates more, but perhaps my best favorite is his Music Lesson of 1877.

Frederick Leighton - Music Lesson (oil on canvas, 1887)

Here is another great favorite among Frederick Leighton's paintings (just re-discovered from my 'personal collection'. :) )

Frederick Leighton - The Painter's Honeymoon (oil on canvas, 1864)
