US Backed Forces Seize Nine Villages in Syria
Published on 2 June 2016

U.S. backed forces have taken control of nine villages near the Turkish border in Syria since Tuesday in an advance toward the Islamic State-controlled town of Manbij.

The U.S. has also carried out airstrikes on Manbij in the last 24 hours which have killed 15 civilians, three of which were children, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Syrian Democratic forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led alliance working alongside over 200 American special forces troops, have moved into the jihadist pocket of territory on either side of the Euphrates river, angering Sunni Arab rebels as well as the Turkish who fear the Kurds are trying to establish their own state along the border.

Did the Mainstream Media Just Ignore the Start of World War III?

There are international news reports that claim Turkish military forces have entered Syrian territory and have established positions near the towns of Azaz and Afrin. If these international news reports are true, then Turkey has essentially declared war on the Assad regime.

In February, I warned that escalating tensions in the region could be the spark that sets off World War III, but things seemed to cool down a bit in March and April. However, this latest move by Turkey threatens to take the war in Syria to a whole new level, and everyone will be watching to see how the Russians and the Iranians respond to this ground incursion.

So far, it is the Russian media that's taking the lead in reporting about this movement of Syrian forces. For example, the Sputnik news agency was one of the first to report Turkish military activity around the town of Azaz:

Amid violent clashes between militants of Daesh and troops of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the town of Azaz in northern Aleppo district, reports are surfacing suggesting that the Turkish Army units have been seen located in the district of Azaz.

In addition, Sputnik claims that Turkish military forces entered a small village called Hamam near the town of Afrin on Saturday.

"Two days ago, the Turkish military entered the village of Hamam in Afrin area. We are ready to repel any attack. Meanwhile, FSA units are suffering serious defeat in clashes with Daesh. They have already lost control of 12 villages. If Daesh comes to Azaz, 'Democratic Syrian Forces' will repel the jihadists, and not allow them to enter the city," Arac stressed.

In particular, the Azaz corridor is considered to be extremely important because that is the primary route that Turkey has been using to resupply jihadi rebels in Aleppo. So Turkey wants to keep that road open at all costs.

Meanwhile, an Iranian news source is also reporting on this Turkish incursion into Syria:

Member of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PDS) Ahmet Arac said that the hundreds of the Turkish soldiers crossed the Syrian border at Bab al-Salameh border-crossing and deployed their forces in al-Shahba'a region near Marea and Azaz.

"The Turkish Armed Forces are preparing an offensive in the Azaz and Marea regions that have been the scenes of tough battles between the ISIL terrorists and its rival group of the Free Syrian Army," Arac added.

"Also yesterday the Turkish Army carried out rocket attacks on the positions of Democratic Forces of Syria," he went on to say.

So far, there has been no confirmation of this invasion from the mainstream media in the Western world. But of course since Turkey is our ally, the Obama administration would not want the media talking about this. So instead, our big media outlets are giving us headlines such as "Judge sentences Catholic to attend Baptist church."

If you have been following my work for a while, you already know that Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been working very hard to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad for years, and Assad knows exactly what Turkey has been up to.

"Turkey, as well as Saudi Arabia, have crossed all possible red lines, possibly from the first weeks of the Syrian war. Today, the war against Erdogan and against Saudi Arabia is a war against terrorists. The Turkish army, which is not even Turkish, is Erdogan's army that is fighting today in Syria. Everything that Ankara and Riyadh have done from the very beginning can be considered aggression. Aggression in a political sense or in a military sense –providing terrorists with arms – or direct aggression with the use of artillery, and other military violations. Erdogan is directly supporting the terrorists as he allows them to move into Turkish territory, to carry out maneuvers with tanks. This concerns not only individuals, he finances them [terrorists] through Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and through Turkey itself, of course.Turkey trades oil that has been stolen by IS (Islamic State, Daesh), at the same time carrying out artillery attacks against the Syrian army – when it moves close – in order to help the terrorists. They are terrorists and when we attack these terrorists in Syria, this leads to Erdogan's direct defeat."

Assad is a very bad man, but everything that he said about Turkey in that quote is true. Turkey has been giving direct assistance to ISIS, and Barack Obama has known about it the entire time.

Most Americans simply do not understand how insane Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan truly is. Our "ally" has essentially become a dictator, and he is obsessed with recreating the old Ottoman empire. These days, political rallies in support of Erdogan are quite reminiscent of what Nazi rallies under Adolf Hitler were like, and there is a nationalistic fervor in Turkey right now that is so intense that it is hard to describe it to someone in the western world. It is fueled by the rise of radical Islam, but what is going on in Turkey is broader than that. It is extremely dangerous, and yet nobody in the U.S. criticizes Erdogan because he is our "friend."

In addition to moving troops into Syria, Turkey already has forces positioned in Iraq, and the Russians are quite upset about this. Just consider what Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

"This (keeping troops in Iraq) is an absolutely unacceptable position," it cited Lavrov as saying. "In principle, I believe that what the Turks are doing deserves far greater public attention on the part of our Western partners."

But for Erdogan, what we have seen so far is just the beginning. He dreams of creating an Islamic empire, and he envisions himself at the top of the food chain.

This is one reason why he is so virulently against birth control for Islamic women in his country. He wants the population of Turkey to multiply greatly so that the Turks can fulfill their appointed destiny.

In a speech broadcast live on TV, he said "no Muslim family" should consider birth control or family planning.

"We will multiply our descendants," said Mr Erdogan, who became president in August 2014 after serving as prime minister for 12 years.

In fact, Erdogan actually considers it to be "treason" for Islamic women in Turkey to use contraception.

Mr Erdogan himself is a father of four. He has previously spoken out against contraception, describing it as "treason" when speaking at a wedding ceremony in 2014.

He has also urged women to have at least three children, and has said women cannot be treated as equal to men.

Are you starting to see how dangerous this man is?

Our "ally" is an egomaniac dictator who dreams of recreating the Ottoman empire, and he now has troops positioned in both Iraq and Turkey.

And if he isn't careful, Erdogan may end up starting a major war which would ultimately involve the United States.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail before events start spinning entirely out of control.

The Startling Truth About How Working Families Are Truly Faring In This Economy

Family Photo - Public Domain
It is hard to live the American Dream when the deck is stacked against you. Our politicians stood idly by as millions of good paying jobs were shipped overseas, our economic infrastructure was absolutely gutted and multitudes of small businesses were choked to death by miles of red tape. Now, we are reaping the consequences. In America today, nobody has a job in one out of every five families, and there are more than 100 million working age Americans that are currency not working. And thanks to our transition to a “service economy”, many of those that are actually working are deeply struggling too. According to the Social Security Administration, 51 percent of all American workers make less than $30,000 a year. And the Federal Reserve says that 47 percent of all Americans could not pay an unexpected $400 emergency room bill without borrowing the money from somewhere or selling something. That means that about half the country is flat broke, and things get even more precarious for working families with each passing day.

Of course the plight of working families is not something that is new. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, wages and salaries earned by workers accounted for around half of all gross domestic income. But since 1970 there has been a precipitous decline, and during the Obama administration we hit an all-time low. In other words, the share of the pie being enjoyed by working families just keeps getting smaller and smaller and smaller.

Share Of Gross Domestic Income

All over the country, median incomes have been falling for years. This is putting an incredible amount of financial stress on working families, and we have seen povertygrow explosively in the United States during the last couple presidential administrations. According to one study, median incomes have fallen in over 80 percent of the major metropolitan areas in this nation since the year 2000…

A major new analysis of income in America published by Pew earlier this month found that more than 80% of the country’s 229 metropolitan areas have seen real (inflation-adjusted) incomes fall steadily since the start of this century. Some of the steepest declines in median incomes have been seen in cities hit by industrial decline – for example a 27% drop in Springfield, Ohio and 18% in the conurbation that includes Detroit. But, ominously, even fast expanding success stories have seen incomes falling.

The area around Denver, Colorado, has seen its population grow by 600,000 since 1999, but its median income has fallen from $83,500 to less than $76,000. Similarly Raleigh, North Carolina, is a fast-growing city buoyed by a cluster of research universities and biotech firms; the population has shot up from 800,000 to 1.3 million this century. Yet its middle class has shrunk from 55% of the population to 50%, and median incomes have fallen by more than $11,000 to about $74,000.

Once upon a time, the middle class was a solid majority in this country.

In fact, 61 percent of all Americans were considered to be middle class back in 1971.

But now, the middle class in the United States is becoming a minority for the first time ever

“After more than four decades of serving as the nation’s economic majority, the American middle class is now matched in number by those in the economic tiers above and below it,” the Pew report said. “Since 1971, each decade has ended with a smaller share of adults living in middle-income households than at the beginning of the decade, and no single decade stands out as having triggered or hastened the decline in the middle.”

One of the big things that is destroying the middle class is the death of entrepreneurship. For decades, small business creation was one of the primary engines that helped fuel the growth of the middle class, but in recent years small business creation has fallen to depressingly low levels

Fewer new businesses were created in the last five years in the US than any period since at least 1980, according to a new analysis (pdf) by the Economic Innovation Group (EIG), a bipartisan advocacy group founded by the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Sean Parker and others. Businesses that did form are also far more concentrated than ever before: just 20 counties accounted for half of the country’s total new businesses. All of them were in large metro areas.

It’s hard to put into scale the collapse of new business formation. We have no precedent for that rapid and steep of a collapse,” said John Lettieri, co-author of the report and co-founder of EIG, in an interview. “It will have a ripple effect in the economy. You‘re going to feel that impact five, 10, and 15 years in the future.”

Of course just about every other economic indicator shows the dramatic decline of the middle class as well. As you can see from this set of charts from Zero Hedge, median family income, the labor force participation rate and the rate of homeownership are all way down over the last decade. Meanwhile, the U.S. national debt, the number of Americans on food stamps and healthcare costs are way up. Does that sound like a “healthy economy” to you?

Obama Economy - Zero Hedge

Unfortunately, this is about as good as things are going to get. A major new economic downturn is already brewing, and layoff announcements at major firmsare running 24 percent higher this year than they were last year.

The America that most of us grew up in is dying, and what we have seen so far is just the tip of the iceberg. If you follow my work closely, then you already know that I believe that much, much worse is coming. But our leaders just continue on with business as usual. They keep doing the same things over and over again, but they keep expecting different results.

What they are doing to “fix” things is not going to work, and that should be exceedingly apparent to everyone by now.

We need to start valuing working families again, and that means encouraging the growth of small businesses and encouraging the creation of middle class jobs.

Sadly, we have already entered the early stages of the next great economic crisis, and so things are going to get a whole lot worse for the working class before there is any chance of them getting better.

EUROZONE on the BRINK: Europe's stock markets NOSEDIVE as Bank policies fail

STOCK markets across Europe plunged into the red yesterday amid growing fears over the economy and the failure of the European Central Bank (ECB).

GETTY
Stock markets crashed into the red amid economic fears

Key measures of the eurozone's economy continue to show sluggish growth and stagnation, in what is a huge blow for policymakers.

In March the ECB pulled out all the stops in an attempt to inject life into the stalling region, by slashing interest rates and printing billions of extra cash.

Yet yesterday it was confirmed the region is stuck in deflation, meaning prices in Europe are overall falling in what is seen as a sign of weak consumer demand and ailing economy.

Today manufacturing data has now disappointed onlookers with Spain, Italy and France all struggling to maintain growth.

Top stock markets in Germany, France and Spain were all nursing losses of around one per cent today.

At the same time, China's colossal economy has showed more worrying signs of slowing with manufacturing data slumping to a three-month low.

It has coincided with grim comments from the OECD over the world economy, with the global think tank warning conditions are "very difficult" at the moment.

Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK said: "European markets have got off to a slow start in June as investors absorb the latest manufacturing reports from around the globe.

"Lacklustre manufacturing PMI reports from Japan and China prompted a disappointing Asia session."

He added: "In Europe the picture for manufacturing isn’t much better with France still struggling and Spain and Italy showing signs of slowing down, though German manufacturing did manage to post a four month high."

Jitters over Britain's in-out referendum increase and uncertainty over American interest rates are also creating uncertainty and nerves among investors.

US On Nuclear Weapons: Do As I Say Not As I Do

JUNE 1, 2016

Op-Ed by
Michael Hicks

Obama recently made another call to end nuclear weapons during his speech at Hiroshima; while I’m sure the words were well-intentioned they start to lose meaning when you look at the actions our country has taken on this issue in recent times. If we really want to pursue a world without nuclear weapons we should lead by example and not just preach what other countries should do while we do it ourselves.

Obama recently said in a Washington Post op-ed that we “remain on track to meet our New Start Treaty obligations so that by 2018 the number of deployed American nuclear warheads will be at their lowest levels since the 1950s.” That sounds nice but it’s not the whole picture. Let’s keep in mind that the number of operational warheads has been steadily declining since the end of the Cold War in the late ’80s. While this is progress, the decline is not an accurate picture of Obama-era policies in the last eight years.

The United States and Russia by far have the largest number of operational warheads. In 2015 the US had 4,571 while Russia had around 4,500. Coming in third place was France with 300. If you remember back in 2011, the New Start treaty went into effect – the US and Russia agreed to reduce their operational nuclear weapons by 50%. We can look at the data and see from 2011 to 2015 there’s only been a 6.7% reduction in the US. The obligations of the treaty must be met by 2018 so there’s still time, but it looks unlikely.

On top of these numbers, we announced a plan to “modernize” our nuclear weapons in 2014. Basically, instead of removing out of date nuclear weapons we’ll use them to make ones that are smaller and more precise. Naturally, this means they’ll be easier to use. According to the government’s own budget projections, these weapons will likely cost one trillion dollars over the next 30 years. This budget exceeds Reagan’s in 1985, which at the time was the largest budget for nuclear weapon modernization.

Obama’s defense budget requests for 2017 show that the reasoning for this is to counter Russia’s “aggressive policies.” Hopefully I don’t have to keep going for you to see how much sense this makes – this sounds like Cold War logic all over again.

In 2013, the Pentagon issued a report saying that after our nuclear weapons are reduced by 50%, our nuclear force levels will be “more than adequate for what the United States needs to fulfill its national security objectives.” Before that, the Pentagon also concluded that Russia “would not be able to achieve a militarily significant advantage by any plausible expansion of its strategic nuclear forces, even in a cheating or breakout scenario under the New START Treaty.” So here we have the government saying internally there’s no issue, but externally telling the public in a press release we need to bulk things up to counter Russia’s aggressive policies. I’m amazed more people don’t acknowledge this but the only way you’d know is to spend hours reading internal papers and a lot of times you have to get access to them through the Freedom of Information Act. Most citizens don’t have time for that.

If the United States wants to lead by example it should be brave enough to take the first step in fulfilling our legal obligation to reduce our nuclear weapons, not “modernizing them” (aka making more precise ones) because we’re afraid of what another country might do. The amount of weapons we have now is enough to destroy the entire world seven times over, there’s no reason to have this many active nukes unless we plan on using them which would kill ourselves. Nations will keep holding onto their nuclear stockpile justifying it publicly with this fear logic until someone is brave enough to make the first step in the opposite direction. If the United States is really a “nation of laws” as many describe it, it’d be a good idea to start abiding by international laws we continuously ignore, including the NPT treaty of 1970 which was signed with the intention of moving towards complete nuclear disarmament.

PAKISTAN: WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH FOR REJECTING MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

BY ON 6/2/16 AT 11:00 AM

Maria Abbasi was babysitting her sister when she was attacked and murdered for turning down a man's offer, her family says.
ABASSI FAMILY

A Pakistani woman died of her injuries in a hospital on Wednesday after she was set on fire for rejecting a marriage proposal.

Maria Abbasi, 18, was a schoolteacher at a private school in the town of Murree in Punjab province. The perpetrators of Abbasi’s murder attacked her while she looked after a younger sister; she was beaten, doused in gasoline, set on fire and left for dead.

The principal of the school wanted her to marry his son but she turned it down, a police officer said, according to Deutsche Welle. Authorities believe that the principal and two accomplices were behind the attack.

"The principal, along with two other men, attacked her house. They first tortured her and then set her on fire," police officer Ishtiaq Haider said.

She suffered “severe burns,” the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences said. Her family rushed her to hospital but it was too late.

Authorities arrested three people in connection with Abbasi’s murder on Wednesday.

Her uncle, Rafaqat, told CNN: "Maria was at home babysitting her 5-year-old sister while her family went to a funeral in a nearby town," said Rafaqat Abbasi, her uncle.

"At the funeral her family was alerted that she 'was on fire.' Initially the thought was there had been some sort of accident, perhaps a pipe had burst or something."

In Pakistan, where honor killings—murders where someone is perceived to have breached a social norm—and arranged marriages are common, women are mostly unable to make decisions regarding their own love life.
