Gaza supporters take outrage to the White House

AFP

Pro-Palestinian supporters, outraged at Israel's military operation in Gaza, take their message to the White House. Linda So reports.

Washington (AFP) - Thousands of protesters, many wrapped in Palestinian flags, rallied outside the White House to call for peace and an end to the fighting in Gaza.

The crowd, young and old from across the United States, including scores of children on parents' shoulders, chanted "End US Aid to Israel" and "Israel out of Palestine."

Many wore headscarves or traditional Palestinian keffiyeh scarves.

"Gaza will not die -- it will never die," said Amar Jamal as he marched through downtown Washington with his family surrounded by a sea of red, black, white and green, the colors of the Palestinians' flag.

"It is the time to make peace because this bloodbath will not stop in Gaza. All the Middle East will be in trouble" if the conflict doesn't end, warned the Palestinian-born 70-year-old.

- 'Stop funding murder' -

Many of the protesters voiced anger at Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, after he vowed to keep up his military campaign against Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas for as long and as forcefully as needed.

One protester waved a banner that read "Netanyahu and Hitler are the same, the only difference is the name."

Others demanded that Washington end its military backing of Israel and take its ally to task over a conflict that has already killed more than 1,700 Palestinians and 66 Israelis, all but two of them soldiers.

Shereen Abdel-Nabi, holding her young son who was wearing a "Jesus is Palestinian" T-shirt, said the "US should stop military aid to Israel and use stronger words in condemning its action."

"I really think this is a turning point ... it's an issue of humanity. The US government is proving to be on the wrong side of history on this one," the 34-year-old added.

- Remembering the dead -

Sam Khalaf, a Palestinian American from Maryland, felt the need to march to show "solidarity" for relatives in the West Bank and Gaza.

"Marching is the least we can do when people are dying," said Khalaf, 33.

Friends Waleh Kanan and Jasmine Abuhummos, both 15, traveled for hours overnight from Toledo, Ohio.

"A lot of people are ignorant about what is going on. So we hope this will help get more of the truth out," said Kanan.

A woman who identified herself as Mary was held back by police as she yelled "stop supporting terror" and brandished an Israeli flag poster toward pro-Palestinian protesters.

CNN reported that a small group of Orthodox Jews held a counter-demonstration that led to a minor scuffle.

Organizers claimed that as many as 50,000 people participated in the afternoon rally.

Police did not immediately respond to requests for official estimates.

Alli McCracken, National Coordinator of the anti-war group CODEPINK, a co-sponsor of the event, said spirits were high "even though there's a massacre going on."

Protests were also held in other US cities, including in Los Angeles, where demonstrators lay down on the ground in front of the Israeli Consulate.

West's wildfires destroy homes, prompt evacuations

Associated Press

Crews battling the El Portal Fire in Yosemite and the Stanislaus National Forest are gaining ground. The wildfire has burned more than 3,500 acres as of Wednesday morning, but firefighters have it nearly 34 percent contained.

ALTURAS, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of federal, state and local firefighters on Saturday were feverishly attacking at least six major wildfires in central and far northern California that prompted evacuations, while blazes in the Pacific Northwest destroyed a handful of homes.

A freshly sparked wildfire in Washington state burned down six to eight homes. Dramatic scenes played out overnight as residents tried to keep the flames at bay, Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said.

"Some great saves were made. Unfortunately, not all the homes were saved," he said.

The scope and intensity of the California blazes, three of them sparked by dry lightning as the state copes with a severe drought, was comparable to the fire activity the state doesn't usually see until September, California Department of Forestry and Fire protection Dennis Mathisen said.

The fires were burning as far south as the Sierra National Forest, about 70 miles from where another blaze sparked evacuations in and around Yosemite National Park earlier in the week, and as far north as the state border, where a blaze that began in southern Oregon had consumed 5.5 square miles and threatened about two dozen homes in California's Siskiyou County.

"When we pop one or two fires at a time, that's one thing, but when you get dry lightning strikes that pop up all over the place, that's when things become a challenge," Mathisen said.

One of the most dangerous California blazes was burning in Modoc County near the community of Day, where about 150 homes were under a mandatory evacuation order.

Just across the border in Oregon, a lightning-sparked fire destroyed three homes and threatened 270 structures. Residents near the flames were being asked to prepare to evacuate. Hot, dry weather is in the forecast as crews work to corral the 33-square-mile blaze.

Thirty fires were reported in Oregon over 24 hours, the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center said Saturday.

As Ukrainian Troops Advance on Donetsk, Rebels May Meet Their Waterloo

ADAM CHANDLER

As Ukrainian forces push their way into Donetsk, home of the self-proclaimed rebel state and Ukraine's fifth-largest city, the rebels are calling for Russia to help.

In recent days, fighting has intensified near Luhansk and Donetsk with government forces battling rebels forces at the outskirts of the cities. According to Al Jazeera, nine civilians died in fighting on Sunday.

Six people were killed in shelling and gunfire on the outskirts of Donetsk, Deputy Mayor Kostantyn Savinov said on Sunday, while city officials said three others were killed in shelling of Luhansk over the previous 24 hours.

As the New York Times noted last week civilian deaths in the Ukrainian crisis has neared 800 since April and has grown steadily in recent weeks, despite the attention brought on by the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

With Russia seemingly sidelined, Ukrainian forces are now making gains and have the rebel stronghold of Donetsk in their sights. From the AP report:

In danger of being encircled, the separatists renewed their calls for Russia to send troops to their aid. To support their operations, they have been confiscating vehicles and food from residents and businesses.

Could this be the rebels' Waterloo? They'd prefer another military-historical parallel. From the Telegraph:

On Thursday, Igor Girkin, the separatists' military commander, was forced to issue a diktat declaring that Donetsk was officially in a "state of siege". His friend, the "people's governor" Pavel Gubarev, promises a new Stalingrad if Kiev-backed forces move on the city.

Strong quake kills 367 in southern China

Associated Press

A general view shows collapsed houses after an earthquake hit Ludian county, Yunnan province August 3, 2014. A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck southwestern China on Sunday, killing at least 150 people in a remote mountainous area of Yunnan province, causing some buildings, including a school, to collapse, Xinhua News Agency reported. REUTERS/China Daily

BEIJING (AP) — A strong earthquake in southern China's Yunnan province toppled thousands of homes on Sunday, killing at least 367 people and injuring more than 1,800.

About 12,000 homes collapsed in Ludian, a densely populated county located around 366 kilometers (277 miles) northeast of Yunnan's capital, Kunming, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was in Longtoushan township, 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of the city of Zhaotong, the Ludian county seat.

Ma Liya, a resident of Zhaotong, told Xinhua that the streets there were like a "battlefield after bombardment." She added that her neighbor's house, a new two-story building, had toppled, and said the quake was far worse than one that struck the area in 2012 and killed 81 people.

"The aftermath is much, much worse than what happened after the quake two years ago," Ma said. "I have never felt such strong tremors before. What I can see are all ruins."

Xinhua said at least 367 people were killed in the quake, with 1,881 injured.

Most of the deaths — 357 — were in Zhaotong City, Xinhua said. Another 10 people were killed in Quijing City.

News reports said rescuers were still trying to reach victims in more remote towns Sunday night.

Photos on Weibo, China's Twitter-like social media site, showed rescuers searching through flattened buildings and people injured amid toppled bricks.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon offered "his condolences to the Chinese Government and the families of those killed," according to a statement from his office. The statement said the U.N. is ready to "lend its assistance to efforts to respond to humanitarian needs" and "to mobilize any international support needed."

The White House also offered its condolences.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that lost their lives," said National Security Council deputy spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan. "The United States stands ready to assist."

Many of the homes that collapsed in Ludian, which has a population of about 429,000, were old and made of brick, Xinhua said, adding that electricity and telecommunications were cut off in the county.

The mountainous region where the quake occurred is largely agricultural, with farming and mining the top industries, and is prone to earthquakes.

Relief efforts were underway, with more than 2,500 troops dispatched to the disaster region, Xinhua said. The Red Cross Society of China allocated quilts, jackets and tents for those made homeless by the quake, while Red Cross branches in Hong Kong, Macau and neighboring Sichuan province also sent relief supplies.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said the quake was the strongest to hit Yunnan in 14 years.

In 1970, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Yunnan killed at least 15,000 people, and a magnitude-7.1 quake in the province killed more than 1,400 in 1974. In September 2012, 81 people died and 821 were injured in a series of quakes in the Yunnan region.

In May 2008, a powerful quake in Sichuan province left nearly 90,000 people dead or missing.

Nowdays, all the governments in the world or collecting huge taxes from tax payers and the same are utilizing for the purpose of peace in the world, but no result. The tax payers are suffering to improve their business and life. The following points may be taken in account to solve all the world challenges and disbute.

Proposal to the United Nations relating to International Peace and Security to authorize Under Article 96(2) of the Charter of the United Nations.

Hello,

Our research report is in conformity with Under Article 1(1) and 7 of the Charter of United Nations and the same maybe authorized by the General Assembly of the United Nations in accordance with U/A 96(2) of the present Charter and U/A 2(2), 5(1),6(2),11(2),13(1), 15(1) (a) (c), 16(2) (a),(b),& 18 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on the basis of U/A 33(1), 55(c), 70, 71,73(a) of the present Charter and accordingly the research paper ought to have been debated with Vatican, World Churches Council, Commission of Churches on International Affairs, Jewish Foundation, Islamic Supreme Councils , researchers of UN and all the International bodies for the following reasons:

Reporting of world peace solutions between Christians,Jews and Muslims in the world

We are here with attached our research report towards international peace and security for perusal and considerations

Since we are the independent and voluntary researchers with out dependency of finance either from the government or any other agency, on the reasons that we are following Social Justice and Common Goods - Policy Paper of World Council of Churches and also By-laws of the Commission of the Churches on international affairs. Our researchers mainly follow the principles and rules laid down by the above important policy and rules.

Under Articles 2.4, 3.6, 3.10&11, 8.1(b) of the By-laws of the Commission of the Churches on international affairs, we have posted our research report in United Nations Global Compact which containing of solving of problems between Christians, Jews, Muslims and Hindus in the world. In accordance with Articles 3.12 of the above By-Laws, it is a duty of commission of Churches to maintain and provide for the maintenance of contacts with International bodies such as the United Nations and its agencies include regional bodies and other non governmental Organisations, which will assist in the attainment of the aims of the Commission. The matter has being brought it to the notice of the World Churches Council and the Commission of the Churches asked its notice on the matter to the United Nations for your appropriate decisions.
The World Churches Council Policy Paper on Social Justice and Common Goods is the best policy to the World peace and unity solutions, which has been published on 22 March 2011 and the same is in accordance with Psalm 85. The Church cannot succeed if it, isolates itself, Not only must Christians reach out to Muslims and other faiths in the spirit of ecumenism, but there is a need to embrace other people of different philosophical convictions. This requires ideological tolerance, maturity and self assurance in what one believes in. Such coalition building is made easier by choosing issues that unite organizations and movements and which have less potential causing divisions. At the same time we need an honest and inventive method of dealing with differences. The global movement for economic justice relies considerably on policy analysis and research conducted by hundreds if not thousands of academics researchers and scholars.
Our consequences of the changing power relations in today's world is that there is more room in the public sphere for the affirmation of collective values and principles, experience proves that an informed public opinion can be powerful today, and can change governments public and international agendas. Again Churches are challenged to make use of this opportunity. They need to read the signs of time and to make their voices heard by responding to peoples cries for justice and dignity, and by speaking truth to the powers- whoever and wherever their may be.
Christians do not have ready made answers and solutions to propose. The Bible offers guidelines (love, sharing, justice for the poor) but does not defined one "Christian" economy or "Christian" politics.
Churches and Church related organizations can initiate public debates and largely use media means to reach a broader constituency, furthermore, regional thematic discussions can be facilitated with the ecumenical family. WCC should develop specific analysis depending on the context.
What are theological implications for commodification common goods?
How shall we ensure the participation all people in managing common goods in the world?
How do we deal with power imbalances in the world?
How can the ecumenical family engage itself effectively and in a coherent and convincing way in addressing global power imbalance?
How can WCC lead a climate change campaign with social justice as a focus?
What kind of collective values can be draw for the Churches to guide them in addressing the problem of commodification of common goods?
The above questions have been answered in our research materials available at http://www.goldenduas.com and alsohttp://www.facebook.com/research of international development solutions and the same are to be discussed by the Churches, public and all its organizations in the interest of public safety, peace, unity, health, wealth, faith, interfaith

Under this circumstances, it is just and necessary that UK, USA, Cambridge, Churches on the International Affairs are requested to accept our research paper and also our research organization as an organization under other faith category to assist the commission to achieve its goal of International Peace and climate changes solutions for the benefit of world community especially Christians, Jewish and Muslims, under the by-law 3.11 of CCIA.

In view of the aforementioned submissions in the interest of maintenance of International Peace and Security, UN may be pleased to authorize our organization in the name and style of` Research on International Development Solutions `and also our research report in confirmatory with U/A 96 of the present Charter read with U/A 23 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and thus render Justice.

Now, Palestine Muslims are fighting with Israel , both countries are affected and innocent people are killed frequently which is against the Quranic verses 7:137 & 5:33 that no one can claim Israel Government areas which is a place of Israel People but not Muslim or Christian and they can only Allow worship in the Holy Places of Israel . These facts has not been Discussed for amicable solutions of social justice and common good by United Nations to respect Gods word .

It is pertinent to note that why the jewish people are affecting the Muslims is mention the Quran 7:167 ? And the same should be taken into consideration by jewish people in the world in the interest of social justice and common good on the light of the research paper posted at our website www.goldenduas.com and render justice.

Your success
