About Me
About Me

I have a non profit animal rescue and do natural horsemanship training. The following is a little about myself and how all this came to be.

I'm a "Florida Cracker" born and raised. I grew up on a farm with horses, cows, goats, chickens, ducks, cats, dogs, a mynah bird, an iquana and even a woolly monkey. My entire childhood has been spent working with and rescueing animals and continued over into adulthood.

I was a Veterinary Technician for 12 years for both small and large animals. I then owned a pet sitting service for 10 years which I took care of everything from frogs to horses. After that I worked as an Animal Control Officer for 3 years. During that time I continued to work with, ride and train horses.

In 2006 I opened my feed store Peace At Last Farm & Feed and created Natural Advantage Horse Training. These two endeavors give me the opportunity to do what I love to do and help others to do the same. I love to share my knowledge of horses with people. Training horses is a joy. Training people to find joy in their horses is a blessing. Every person I help to understand their horse and their horses nutritional needs produces happy horses and happy owners. There are horse owners out there who have never had the type of relationship with their horse that makes them true partners.

My greatest teacher was the pony that was given to me when I was born (my profile pic). He taught me more about horses than anyone or anything could have. He showed me the intelligence, personality, dependability and partnership you can have with a horse. He taught me patience and compassion. He taught me how to go with nature rather than against it. All these lessons he instilled in me as a youth have stayed with me throughout my life.

A little about my teacher....

His name was Prince. He was with out a doubt my "prince". He taught me to ride. When I tell someone I was riding before I could walk my Mom corrects me. She says, "no, you were riding before you were born". She rode while she was pregnant with me. I guess that's why even though I can not walk across a room with a cup of coffee without spilling it but I can ride and carry one and not spill a drop.

When I was 14 I ran out to the gate and to my surprise Prince didn't greet me. I headed out to the pasture and saw him grazing in the back field. The closer I got to him the more apparent it became that something was not right. His front leg was bent forward just below the knee. Best that we could tell he'd stepped in a gopher turtle hole and had broken it. This was back in 1977. I was, well there's really no words to describe what I felt. I knew what it meant. I would not settle for that though. Our vet had been our vet since I was a baby. I begged, pleaded and cried until he gave in. He said he would do what he could and it was up to me to pull him through it. We casted his leg and I cared for him. We housed him in the garage to ensure his cast would not get wet or dirty. Prince being as he was had to be walked outside to go to the bathroom. He was an incredible pony. Prince was already 10 years old when I was born so not only had he broken his leg but he was 24 when it happened. I cared for him, checked his leg and cast daily and spoiled him rotten of course. How did it all turn out? His leg healed wonderfully and he was full of spirit and just as ornery as ever. He passed away when I was 28 years old. He taught me a lifetime of lessons, literally.
