THE EYE OF HORUS

Mythology -The EYE of Horus

Horus was the falcon or hawk headed god of Egyptian legend. Hierax ΗΙΕΡΑΞ is the Greek word for hawk. The word hieroglyphs is defind from the sam root. Pharoah was the earthly incarnation of the Horus. Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis, was called "Horus who rules with two eyes." His right eye was white and represented the sun. His left eye was black and represented the moon. According to myth Horus lost his left eye to his evil brother, Seth, whom he fought to avenge Seth's murder of Osiris. Seth tore out the eye but lost the fight. The eye was reassembled by magic by Thoth, the god of writing, the moon, and magic. Horus presented his eye to Osiris, who experienced rebirth in the underworld.

Horus story begins with his parents Osiris and Isis.

Osiris, Isis, and their brother Seth were all gods. Osiris was god of vegetation, Isis the goddess of fertility and Seth the god of the desert. Osiris was a "living god", like Horus he was embodied as the pharaoh. When he became pharaoh, he took Isis to be queen. Seth became jealous and murdered Osiris. He cut Osiris' body into pieces and scattered them throughout Egypt. When Isis heard, she took the form of a bird and searched until she found all the parts of his body. After reassembling Osiris' body, she beat her wings and breathed life back into him. Thereafter, Osiris was god of the afterlife.

To avenge his father, Horus fought Seth. After battling for 80 years, Horus was judged victorious by the gods, but he had lost his eye in the battle. The eye was found and returned to him. As a gesture of respect, he presented the eye to his father, Osiris. The Eye of Horus or "udjat" represents the combination of a human eye, with the cheek markings of a falcon. It was considered a powerful symbol for imparting protection and life.

Dear Georgios,

I do enjoy the myths with you.

I've requested my name in hieroglythics too. What fun!

I've actually got Horus on papyrus, on my kitchen wall. My sister in law gave it to me many moons ago.

Angel cuddles,

Sarah

Hey Georgios,

Though a large percentage of the world's population is non or anti-paganistic, I find it Ironic that pagan symbols still keep finding their way into our everyday lives. And the influence they have is beyond awesome.

For example, the Eye of Horus is on the back of every American dollar bill, just inside the top of a Pyramid. And thte statue on the top of the Whitehouse in Washington, DC is Persophone, goddess of the underworld. Go figure!

                     Later................................!
