You are correct there about PHP being very similar...At the surface they are almost the same.
The trouble is that as we move along here and get in deeper...PHP can be a very complicated language to learn.
What I like about HTML is that it is not a hard language to learn and Its something that almost any page will except.
I some times use PHP as a back end script and use HTML in the front end. v/s PHP all the way through.
I find PHP is a bit more friendly in the RedHat /Unix world thats for sure as the security features you can develop are of a higher standard and easier to encrypt.
We wont get into Encryption as that will blow most people out of the water :)
What I like about HTML is once you have the Basics down the you can use that knowledge and start to play with other languages
