STAPH INFECTION CAUSES SCHOOLS TO SHUT DOWN
11/1/2007 2:40:46 PM
 "DEAR FRIENDS OF RADIO"

Public schools in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and Eastern Kentucky are being disinfected after students showed signs of an antibiotic-resistant staph infection. In New York, a school worker and a student showed signs of MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, authorities said. Mt. Vernon Schools Superintendent W. L. Tony Sawyer said a high school employee and a third-grade student are being tested for MRSA. The bacteria are blamed for the death of a 17-year-old African-American, Virginia high school senior and a 12-year-old New York City middle school student this month. Sawyer said the two students will stay home from the schools — Edward Williams Elementary and Nelson Mandela Community High — until the test results are known. Sawyer said that if either tests positive, the school system will redouble its efforts to disinfect. At least seven students on New York’s Long Island were diagnosed recently with MRS. In the Eastern Kentucky school district, there was one confirmed case of MRSA, prompting school officials to shut down all 21 of its schools for disinfection Monday, affecting about 10,300 students. “We’re not closing schools because there’s been a large number of breakouts, but as a preventive measure,” said Roger Wagner, superintendent of Pike County schools.

Hi Marilyn, The incidence of staph infections outside of hospitals seems to have increased. You use to hear about them in hospitals, but not in schools. It is scary to think of the potential damage caused by this outbreak. Medical personnel have stressed the importance of handwashing, which is something a lot of kids are lax at doing. DonnaZ

Hi Marilyn,

Thank you for sharing this information with me.  Handwashing is so important in preventing the transmitting of germs.  I hope a lot of people take notice of this post and spread the information on, I am.
