BLACK HUMOR AND GREECE

 

Black humor comes from black bile, a direct translation of 'μέλαν [melan]' meaning "black" and 'χολή [chole]' meaning bile.

 

The archaic Euboean (Greek island) word 'χύμωρ [humor]' means juice or fluid substance in the body, such as blood, lymph, or bile. In Attic dialect and in the word is 'χυμός [hymos]' meaning juice.

According to the ancient theory, any of four bodily fluids that determined man's health and temperament was called humor.  Physicians in the middle Ages believed that four principal humors as blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile, controlled body functions and that a person's temperament resulted from the humor that was most prevalent in the body. Sanguine people were controlled by blood, phlegmatic people by phlegm, choleric people by yellow bile (choler), and melancholic people by black bile (melancholy).

Hippocrates (460-370 BC), concidered The father of Medicine, postulated that an imbalance among the humors (blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile) resulted in pain and disease, and that good health was achieved through a balance of the four humors; he suggested that the glands had a controlling effect on this balance. For many centuries this idea was held as the basis of medicine and was much elaborated. 


Hipocrates is credited with greatly advancing the systematic study of clinicla medicine, summing up the medical knowledge of previous schools, and prescribing practices for physicians through the Hippocratic Oath (see post berow) and other works, about 60 books.

 

Galen introduced a new aspect, that of four basic temperaments reflecting the humors: the sanguine, buoyant type; the phlegmatic, sluggish type; the choleric, quick-tempered type; and the melancholic, dejected type. In time any personality aberration or eccentricity was referred to as a humor.

 

In literature, a humor character was one in whom a single passion predominated; this interpretation was especially popular in Elizabethan and other Renaissance literature. One of the most comprehensive treatments of the subject was the Anatomy of Melancholy, by Robert Burton. The theory found its strongest advocates among the comedy writers, notably Ben Jonson and his followers, who used humor characters to illustrate various modes of irrational and immoral behavior. In medicine, the theory lost favor in the 19th century after the German Rudolf Virchow presented his cellular pathology.

Hello Georgios,


Very interesting information about humor and how the four different humors reflect in man's attitude. Nowadays there are a lot of books describing the four types of human personality according to the four bodily fluids.

Today I gave you and our friends the father of mediciine HIPPOCRATES and of course I will not stop there.

Here is the oath of all people working seriously on medicine and healt.

THE OATH OF HIPPOKRATES

I swear by Apollo the physician and Æsculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses, that, according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation—to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, and relieve his necessities if required; to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this Art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or other stipulation; and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others.

I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art. I will not cut persons labouring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and, further, from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves. Whatever, in connection with my professional practice, or not in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the Art, respected by all men, in all times. But should I trespass and violat t

Ορκίζομαι στο θεό Απόλλωνα τον ιατρό και στο θεό Ασκληπιό και στην Υγεία και στην Πανάκεια και επικαλούμενος τη μαρτυρία όλων των θεών ότι θα εκτελέσω κατά τη δύναμη και την κρίση μου τον όρκο αυτόν και τη συμφωνία αυτή. Να θεωρώ τον διδάσκαλό μου της ιατρικής τέχνης ίσο με τους γονείς μου και την κοινωνό του βίου μου. Και όταν χρειάζεται χρήματα να μοιράζομαι μαζί του τα δικά μου. Να θεωρώ την οικογένειά του αδέλφια μου και να τους διδάσκω αυτήν την τέχνη αν θέλουν να την μάθουν χωρίς δίδακτρα ή άλλη συμφωνία. Να μεταδίδω τους κανόνες ηθικής, την προφορική διδασκαλία και όλες τις άλλες ιατρικές γνώσεις στους γιους μου, στους γιους του δασκάλου μου και στους εγγεγραμμένους μαθητές που πήραν τον ιατρικό όρκο, αλλά σε κανέναν άλλο.

Θα χρησιμοποιώ τη θεραπεία για να βοηθήσω τους ασθενείς κατά τη δύναμη και την κρίση μου, αλλά ποτέ για να βλάψω ή να αδικήσω. Ούτε θα δίνω θανατηφόρο φάρμακο σε κάποιον που θα μου το ζητήσει, ούτε θα του κάνω μια τέτοια υπόδειξη. Παρομοίως, δεν θα εμπιστευτώ σε έγκυο μέσο που προκαλεί έκτρωση. Και όσα τυχόν βλέπω ή ακούω κατά τη διάρκεια της θεραπείας ή και πέρα από τις επαγγελματικές μου ασχολίες στην καθημερινή μου ζωή, αυτά που δεν πρέπει να μαθευτούν παραέξω δεν θα τα κοινοποιώ, θεωρώντας τα θέματα αυτά μυστικά. Αν τηρώ τον όρκο αυτό και δεν τον παραβώ, ας χαίρω πάντοτε υπολήψεως ανάμεσα στους ανθρώπους για τη ζωή και για την τέχνη μου. Αν όμως τον παραβώ και επιορκήσω, ας πάθω τα αντίθετα...
