I agree with the points you've made here, but as Alan Munro has pointed out, sometimes we run across people who aren't like this.
My parents raised me to treat people well, but when I was 21 I became a Police Officer and got a different kind of education about people and my own personal beliefs about them. On many occasions, I've started off interactions on a pleasant level, but sometimes people don't reciprocate (especially when I was in a uniform) and I found their negative attitudes towards me (or what I represented to them) often pulled me right down to their level and I sometimes wasn't able to be "nice" to people. I recall that often these people had been "frequent flyers" with police contacts and many had been victims of, or givers of abuse.
Even when things sometimes went sour, I've always done my best to end the contact on a positive note with some kind of words of encouragement for "my new friend."
It's never wise to burn a bridge that you may someday need to cross over again.
