My dear friend Kathleen,

Never one to turn down the request of a lady (and great friend) such as yourself...

The story of my infamous "Bar-Room Brawl"

I was probably 20 at the time, and an Able Seaman of the HMCS Mackenzie. What an amazing time that period of my life was! (at least now when I look back on it)
We were in (of all places) Newport Oregon. It was, as I recall, one LOOONNGGG trip up a narrow channel but our ship being a destroyer escort was easily small enough to make it without grounding. Man! talk about a tidal change! I think it was something like 20 feet! We had to arrange special jetties (gangways) one on the flag deck at low tide, and another on the main deck at high tide.

So of course after we were all secured, and leave was granted, me and the "boys" all piled off the ship at the first opportunity, and straight to the major entertainment venues in town (which being fairly small was primarily the bars..lol)
What I remember most is all the ornaments in display cases and the dance floor surrounded by a railing. Oh yea..and the bar gave us par on the dollar, so those of us being "entrepeneurs" brought wads of 20's, bought a drink in Canadian, and received change in American, I think at that time a difference of 20 cents on the dollar..

We all had more than a few under our belts, it was probably about 11pm, and we were having fun with the local ladies on the dance floor, but I apparently the local guys didn't appreciate us quite as much ;-)

Next thing I know there's a few of our guys in a tangle with a few of the locals on the dance floor, and more from each side were making straight towards the melee. Not being a shirker of duty to rally to the call of my mates I too went to join the "party" lol
Being somewhat "vertically" challenged, I had to think on my feet so to speak..and I saw my opportunity concerning that guard rail surrounding the dance floor. So with my running start I was able to use that as a launching "pad" and airborne I landed on the back of one of our opponents. He was rather large, and I was having quite an interesting ride..lol But I think the local constabulary were anticipating such an eventuality, and were johnny on the spot to break things up, and thus we merry (and slightly tipsy) crew were escorted back to our ship, many of us proudly sporting a fat lip or two..lol

And THAT my friends is the story of the Bar-Room Brawl.
