Hello Joe,
Thank you for your prayers and comments and listening. This discussion are helping to get things off my chest.
Daryl would have started receiving ACC (accident compensation) very quickly after he signed papers in the hospital. The hospitals have forms etc for patients to sign as soon as they are able so these benefits can get into the system and everyone concerned can receive their payments etc.
No-one receives full payment from ACC, only about 80% (this is how it use to be, but I have not been home for nearly 9 years so things may have changed a little)
I agree, where are all the ethical people? One of the reason's I am annoyed - the court system that gave the verdict of $1,000.00 payable to Daryl by the driver, is rediculous... (whether the judge could only fine this driver $1,000 as the full amount he could fine him) then this law needs to be re-addressed.
This driver has the responsibility to assist with payment and the court should have also included in their fine that the Driver pay a certain amount weekly or 2 weekly (whichever he gets paid by) to ACC to help offset this extra drain on this benefit.
ACC is for everyone in New Zealand that has an accident (dangerous sporting has to have their own insurance policies to cover accidents and injuries) Accidents happen that are not always anyone to blame e.g. You can be crossing the street and fall and hurt yourself badly that you need medical or hospital assistance. ACC will assist this person with their medical fees and if they have to take time off work etc.
Working people who have an accident in the work place are covered by ACC too, however employers and employees pay into the system to cover these - similar to Workers Comp here in the States.
I agree, every car on the road should have by law insurance. I know here in the States when you buy a vehicle from a dealer you have to have proof of insurance before you can take the car off their lot after purchase.
These drivers that get caught driving without insurance and even worse suspended drivers licence, the law just seems so lienent towards these offenders..that they can go out again because they say 'what is the worst you can do to me'? Some of them have even been in prison so it is not a new and scary place for them to go that they will obey the laws to stop from going to prison!
Kind regards Amanda
