Hello Kathy
Before I responded to your post I did my due dillingence, so don't get mad but this are the FACTS.
1) Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold.
Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the Petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products all play an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
FALSE -
FUEL STATIONS HAVE TO DO REGULAR FUEL REPORTS REQ'D. BY LAW. THESE ARE DONE AT ALL DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY. CERTAIN THINGS "BY LAW" HAVE TO BE MEASURED AND COMPLIED WITH, THAT INVOLVES FUEL DELIVERY - MEASURING THE AMOUNT / VOLUME (ONE REGISTERED GALLON AT THE PUMP HAS TO BE AT LEAST ONE GALLON, OR THEY ARE IN BIG TROUBLE!) SPECIFIC GRAVITY MUST BE THE SAME. THE TEMP. UNDERGROUND DOES NOT VARY VERY MUCH AND 1 DEGREE RISE WOULD NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THE TANKS ARE SET UP FOR PRESSURE COMPENSATION, WHICH IS THE IMPORTANT ISSUE. THIS WHOLE STATEMENT IS LOADED WITH IGNORANCE AND IS A MYTH!
2) When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pumps have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money. |
THIS IS A SOMEWHAT SILLY STATEMENT. THE ONLY THING ABOUT FILLING TOO FAST IS THE POSSIBILITY OF NOT SHUTTING OFF AT FULL LEVEL AND SPILLING FUEL ON THE GROUND. EVER SEE THOSE SPLASH GUARDS ON THE PUMP NOZZLES? IT IS TRUE THAT IT DOESN'T PAY TO TRY AND OVERFILL ANY FUEL TANK. VEHICLE GAS TANKS ALL HAVE A RETURN LINE AND ARE VENTED TO A CANNISTER THAT RECOVER THE VAPORS. IF RAW GAS GETS INTO THE VAPOR CANNISTER FROM CONSTANT "TOPPING OFF" THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE CANNISTER SOONER THAN IF YOU JUST FILLED AT A NORMAL LEVEL. THE MIDDLE OR NORMAL NOZZLE POSTION IS GOOD. IF ANYONE CAN MEASURE ANY REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MIDDLE AND SLOW POSITION SHOW ME. GETTING BEHIND SOME "CHEAP FUEL FREAK" THAT HAS TO GO AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE AND HOLD UP THE LINE IS REALLY ANNOYING! AGAIN THE ANSWER TO THIS IS #1 - THE FLOW AND DELIVERY RATES REGULATED.
3) One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, every gasoline deleivery truck that is loaded is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
4) If there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

3) I BELIEVE IT IS WISE TO FILL YOU TANK FULL IN THE WINTER, ESPECIALLY. IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO DRIVE ON THE BOTTOM HALF BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF CONDENSATION OR MOISTURE GETTING IN THE TANK. I DON'T HEAR THAT IN THE STATEMENT ABOVE. SO TRUE, BUT FALSE FOR THE REASON GIVEN ABOVE. Kathy you STATE "GASOLINE EVAPORATES FASTER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE." OH REALLY, EVER SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR A SPILL TO DISAPPEAR ON CONCRETE? WHY DO FUEL STATION OWNERS RUSH OUT WITH FLOOR DRY TO COVER OVER GAS SPILLS WHEN THEY OCCUR? IF IT IS 120*F OUTSIDE IT WILL EVAPORATE PRETTY FAST, BUT SO WILL WATER!
4) THERE WAS SOME CREDIBILITY TO THIS, BUT THIS STATEMENT IS BEHIND THE 21st CENTURY! MODERN FUEL STATIONS HAVE VERY GOOD FUEL FILTERS AT THE PUMP AND DIRT WILL GET STOPPED AT THE FILTER. THESE FILTERS ARE ON A REGULAR MAINTENANCE, CHANGE SCHEDULE. GAS STATIONS CAN SHOW FOLKS THEIR FUEL AND MAINTENANCE REPORTS, SOME EVEN POST THEM IN THEIR OFFICE. I WOULD IF I OWNED A GAS STATION TO DISPEL THE MYTHS!
